Writer's Strike

As of November 5, 2007, members of the Writer's Guild of America are on strike, meaning they are not producing scripts for new episodes of television shows. According to series creator Al Gough, if the strike persists for a significant length of time, Season Seven will have fifteen episodes, ending in a cliffhanger with Veritas in February. Viewers can read his statement here, courtesy of KryptonSite, and find information about the writer's strike at the WGA site. Both sides resumed talks on November 26, 2007, which lasted until December 6, 2007, but abruptly broke off with no resolution yet. [1] The week of January 21, 2008, studios and writers began informal talks with the aim to resume formal negotiations. If the Strike is resolved within the next couple of weeks, many current hour-long shows could still be able to produce about six new episodes and networks would probably choose higher-rated shows.[2] Viewers can remain optimistic because Smallville is The CW's highest rated scripted show.

Fall season footer

Hi folks -- I'm working on a project for Wikia to help link the TV wikis together, and encourage people to see this as one big site, rather than a lot of little wikis. I'd like to post this footer at the bottom of the main page.

The gaming wikis have started a similar project, and they've seen a lot more cross-traffic. Would it be okay to post this at the bottom of the main page here? You could also feel free to edit it, to fit in better with this community. -- Danny (talk) 00:10, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

I don't mind, but I guess it should go up for debate. I'll throw in the first vote and hopefully others will contribute an opinion. Marikology 02:16, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Agree- it looks nice and will bring more exposure to the site. Although I'm a little unhappy with how big it is. I'd like it a little smaller. Marikology 02:16, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
Okay, I shrunk it up a little. How's this? -- Danny (talk) 18:54, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

Featured Articles

There is now a box for users to vote on the upcoming Featured Articles to be displayed on the Main Page. It is located on the Talk Page of the Main Page.

Kara

  • The character pages for Kara Zor-El and Lara Lor-Van have been moved to include their last names. The Season 7 episodes entitled "Kara" and "Lara" have been moved to Kara and Lara, respectively, to eliminate the (episode) distinction. Marikology 06:50, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Quote of the day

It has been suggested that the Main Page contain a box for a quote of the day. Please leave suggestions for or against this idea here.

Support- I think this is a good idea, with any user able to pick the quote. If a user wants to create a box that will fit the layout of the Main Page, this would be a great addition to the site.Marikology 04:12, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
Support- I agree, but I think the must be a voting to nominee the quote. Rezendii 12:16, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, but I don't think we have enough active users to have a voting system for a daily quote. I can't even get poeple to suggest a Featured Article every two months. I put up my suggestions, get no response, then wind up just picking one myself. I imagine anybody just putting up a quote they like with the date in a hidden comment and if you get to the day first, you can change it. Marikology 18:43, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

Episode categories

I was thinking of creating more categories for episodes. Examples include those featuring Lionel or Lois, episodes with "body switches" or possessions, and "Freak of the Week" episodes. Would these categories be useful? Please leave comments here. Marikology 04:12, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

I suppose so. Rezendii 01:03, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

Sidebar

The sidebar for the wikia now includes more links. There are some advantages- navigation will be simpler and one doesn't have to go to the main page anymore for commonly-viewed pages. One drawback is that the search box is further down the page. Suggestions and comments are always welcome. (Also, the sidebar is unable to be stylized or formatted.) Marikology 05:45, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Update- It was requested that Martha and Lionel be added to the sidebar. This is convienient, however it lengthens it even further. Comments and opinions are welcome here or on the Sidebar Talk page. Marikology 22:28, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Update- Smallville is on summer hiatus. When it returns, the sidebar will be updated to include Season 7 and Martha Kent, who has left the show, will be removed or replaced with whoever is currently in the opening credits. Marikology 05:09, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
Update- The sidebar has been updated to include the characters in the order in which they appear in the opening credits.Marikology 02:33, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Navigation Boxes

In an attempt to improve the navigation of the site, I created two navigation boxes. One is attached to the Template:Infobox TV and the other is attached to the Template:Television Stories Box. This was the easiest way I could think of to get the boxes on more than 100 pages all at once. Please record your comments here. Do you like the boxes? Do you like one better than the other? Do you have other design ideas? -Samantha's Mom 23:47, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

An excellent idea, really like them. But is the Minor and Main Characters really needed there? SFilip 14:26, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Can the main sidebar take the place of the upper navigation table? Your table looks a thousand times better than the sidebar- it's a shame we can't stylize it, but now that it *is* more comprehensive, the table is redundant. However, I think the footer nav table should stay. Marikology 05:45, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
I liked the "previous episdoe" and "next episode" options. Could those be added? Also, like SFilip said, I don't think that's a good place for Minor characters. I'd put main characters at the top, and minor characters at the bottom of the page. (or them both at the bottom). like after the quotes and stuff.--Cong06 17:17, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
I've shortened the navigation table at the top and added a previous and next episode syntax to the table. However, this will have to be filled out on each individual episode page. I did not change the table at the bottom. Marikology 04:26, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

I totally love the new side bar navigation. You won't hurt my feelings one bit if you modify the other nav tables. -Samantha's Mom 06:44, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

It's been nearly a month, so I tried to incorporate the suggestions here. I like the new sidebar very much, and it makes the navigation in the info box completely redundant, so I took it out of there, shortening the box considerably. I left the row with the word Navigation, but you can take out to make the table a little shorter. I modified the navigation table at the bottom of the page, tightening it up and fixing it so that the links don't change color. I hate it when links change color, but I can't seem to find the right shade of blue. I also separated it into its own template, so that it can be added to the bottom of other pages more easily. -Samantha's Mom 08:33, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Well done. They're clearly understandable and easy to use. I like them! --DarkKnight 07:55, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Site down

Was this site down for a few days? Does anyone know why? -Samantha's Mom 23:14, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

I thought it was running slowly, but I was having router problems all weekend, so my net was slow as a whole. It seems to be up and running just fine now, though. Marikology 06:06, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Character Templates

Currently there are two templates for characters, those with powers and those without. I was thinking it'd be cool to change the color bar on the two for a quick distinction. I don't have any color preferences or suggestions, I just thought the grey is very light and kinda boring. Opinions? Marikology 00:24, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Sounds like a good idea to me. Maybe different shades of the same color. Red, yellow and blue are the colors of the superman costume. Maybe green since so many of the characters receive their powers from green kryptonite. -Samantha's Mom 23:14, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

so I changed the chars with powers to yellow and the chars without powers to blue. I think it looks pretty good. Comments? Suggestions? Marikology 03:56, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

I love it! More color might be nice, like the border around the table. And it would be great to get a third template so we can use red, too. Maybe a special template for MainCharacters (then we wouldn't have to change so many pages), but we'd have to figure out a way for powers and abilities to only show up when filled in. The episode template does that, so I might be able to figure it out.-Samantha's Mom 07:27, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
OK now I've made the border heavier and red. I think it looks great, but let me know if it's too thick, I'll fix it. Marikology 23:42, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

New character template

I've created a new generic template for all characters in my own user space. I'm thinking it can replace Template:Character and then redirect Template:CharacterPowers to it. New template link: User:Joak/Template:Character . It colors minor characters blue, main characters red and characters with powers yellow. See example in my user page Joak 20:27, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

I think your templates look great, but is it just one template? If so, how do we specify what kind of char it is when using it? Also, for the chars without powers, does it leave it blank or not include it at all? I love the way they look; I just hope they are easy to use. Marikology 22:02, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

It's used just as the old templates. But if the power field is defined, the nametag will be colored yellow. And if "main" is added (ie. {{Character|main|name=stuff}} etc., it will be colored red. So it's no additional effort at all to use it. Joak 22:14, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

That is really cool! But here's another question- we will have to replace the boxes on every character with the new template, no? Which I don't think is that big of a deal, but some might. Marikology 22:21, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
I think this sounds and looks really great. I wanted to try it out and see how it works so I made it live by calling it Character2, and I filled out three copies of it in Samantha's Sandbox. Can you fix it so that the other items disappear if they are left blank? Sometimes we don't know if a character has family or what they do for a living, and it would look nicer if those spaces disappeared when they were blank. -Samantha's Mom 05:13, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

If we redirect Template:CharacterPowers to Template:Character we don't have to change any current articles. Joak 14:45, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

I've changed User:Joak/Template:Character. If a field is left empty nothing is displayed (Exception: name). Joak 15:21, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

I've now replaced the old template with the new one, if you notice any oddity, post here or on the talk page. Joak 20:43, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
