Personality
Edit
In many ways, Brainiac 5 is driven to atone for the sins of the original corrupted version of Brainiac. The original Brainiac was corrupted and became a tool for evil at the hands of General Zod. Then Clark Kent saved him and enabled him to be reprogrammed for good.
Brainiac 5 was driven to do the same for Clark: to save him for the corruption in his heart, and prevent him from becoming a tool for evil at the hands of Darkseid. According to Brainiac, that darkness was the past, and how Clark punishes himself and everyone around him for his past mistakes - along with his fear of the future.
Brainiac may have had a broader directive to protect Clark. He also reprogrammed a Smallville High school counselor so that she wouldn't attack Clark Kent at his reunion.
Brainiac 5 retains the same logic that he had when he was Brainiac, and seems as cold and indifferent to emotional responses as before. He also has the same dry wit. This prevented Clark from seeing the change in him at first particularly as he was not afraid to show Clark the painful memory of when Johnathan Kent died. In the end however, Clark sees that he is empathetic and was trying to teach Clark that every human being is responsible for his her own choices and that he should not blame himself for the choices of others.
He still has a hint of arrogance to him, telling Clark that he invented time travel and brought the legion into a new age of heroism. He also seems to be able to control and stop time as well merely by thought, no doubt due to his computer-like abilities being directly connected to the Flight Ring. Despite this, Brainiac 5 does not interfere with past, present, or future events leaving fate to its own design, which shows that he respects and has faith in humanity despite being a flawed race.
Powers and Abilities
Edit
Brainiac 5 claimed to have invented both time travel and the Legion ring.
Brainiac 5 did indeed display powers of time travel and time manipulation not possessed by his predecessor.
- Time Travel: Brainiac 5 was able to travel back through time from the 31st century. Previously in order to travel back in time, Brainiac needed Kara's bracelet to open a portal and the Fortress to go back in time.
- Time Freeze: Brainiac 5 was also able to freeze time: he froze time at the Smallville High reunion so that only he and Clark were able to interact, while everyone else was frozen.
- Time Manipulation: Brainiac 5 was also able to manipulate time so that Clark and him were able to travel through time while no one could see them or sense their presence.
- Biological Manipulation: Brainiac 5 also was able to biologically manipulate a high school counselor so that instead of wanting to hurt Clark Kent, she wanted to give him a hug.
- All Kryptonian Powers and Abilities: It currently remains unknown as to whether or not Brainiac 5 possesses Kryptonian powers and abilities like his former self. Brainac did, however, bear Kryptonian powers and abilities prior to his internal corruption by General Zod on Krypton, which suggests but does not confirm that he still has these powers.

Season Eight
Edit

Added by LOVINxLOSTWhen Brainiac 5's predecessor Brainiac took control of Chloe Sullivan, the three founding members of the Legion of Super-Heroes, Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, and Lightning Lad traveled back to the 21st Century to help Clark Kent defeat Brainiac.
Although the Legion initially wanted to kill Chloe and thus Brainiac, Clark convinced the three Legion members to used their powers together in order to remove Brainiac from Chloe's body. Cosmic Boy then condensed the remaining bits of Brainiac into a small metal orb, which they intended to take back to the 31st Century. Imra implies that they will remake Brainiac into a benevolent being named Brainiac 5.
Season Ten
Edit

Added by TG90Brainiac 5 appeared in past, using time manipulation technology, to freeze time and manipulate the memories of the vengeful guidance counselor who carried strong resentment towards Clark Kent.

Added by TG90Brainiac 5 appeared before Clark; however, Clark did not recognize the new changes about his former foe. Brainiac wanted to take Clark with him through a journey in time for this was the time where everything changes. Brainiac took Clark to Jonathan Kent's funeral, that this was the defining moment, for blaming himself. He showed him the fight between Jonathan and Lionel Luthor, which brought about his death, which Jonathan's choice was to save Clark in many ways. He showed Oliver in his office at LuthorCorp, in the present time watching the media talking about Oliver's exposure. Because of Clark's silence and distance, Oliver was anxious to receive help and comfort for what he had done. Brainiac 5 took Clark to see Lois watching over her from afar, as she was starting to become unsure about his feelings for her. He told Lois that he must face the present of what is going on. When Clark saw Greg approaching Lois, Brainiac 5 was trying to instruct the lesson but Clark forced himself upon the ring and was transported to alternate future.
Brainiac 5 managed to find Clark, to tell him to stop worrying about the past things he has done. He took him back to present, where Greg changed to be a good man, asking Lois to thank Clark for him. Brainiac then reminded Clark on what it means to be a hero, and everything that happened and is happening is proof of it. He left Clark in the present at the reunion.
Season Eleven
Edit

Added by Guy of SteelWhen Clark and Booster Gold are accidently transported by the Legion Flight to the 31's Century of Metropolis. Superman encounters both Lighting Lad and Brainiac 5 after he rescues them from a prisoner spaceship that was plummeting into the city. Their reunion is interrupted by a squad of New Krypton police battalion.
In the Comics
Edit

Added by BabygogetaBrainiac 5 ("Brainy" for short) is a direct descendant of Superman's long-time enemy, Brainiac and a long-standing member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, using his 12th level intelligence to often save the day. He is an expert on the science of time-travel and often considered the one responsible for a majority of the Legionaire's weapons and technology. Due to the DCU's constantly changing continuity, there has been multiple version of the Legion and of Brainiac himself. In many versions however, Brainiac has been portrayed as highly-intelligent, yet extremely arrogant and condescending individual who seems easily annoyed at the fact that his Legion teammates are not as smart as he is. Ironically, despite his ancestor being one Superman's greatest foes, the Pre-Crisis Brainiac 5 had a serious long-term relationship with Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El, AKA Supergirl.
Quotes
Edit
- Clark: I don't know if you're a ghost from my past, or the darkness that Jor-El warned me about. But this will come to an end just like it did the last time.
- Brainiac 5: I hope so, for your sake.
- Clark: My sake? You sent the person that I love away. You tried to destroy Chloe. You tried to destroy the world.
- Brainiac 5: And you saved me from all of that, Kal-El. I've come back to do the same for you. (holds up hands to show Clark his Legion ring)
- Clark: The Legion. You're from the future? What'd you do to them?
- Brainiac 5: I joined them. In the 31st Century I'm known as Brainiac 5. The ring, time travel. All my creations. It brought the Legion into a new realm of heroism.
- Clark: They helped me destroy you.
- Brainiac 5: No, they helped you cure me. The problem is, Kal-El. You and I aren't very different. We were created in one way or another by Jor-El. Both intended to save civilizations. To bring peace to a brutal world. But neither of us was immune to corruption. To darkness. (he takes Clark to Smallville Cemetery)
- Clark: My father's funeral. If you're trying to save me somehow, why show me this?
- Brainiac 5: Because this was a defining moment for you. Perhaps "the" defining moment. The day you started to blame yourself.
- Brainiac 5: Why won't you forgive yourself?
- Clark: He didn't have a choice. He's my father. Of course he'd sacrifice anything to protect me.
- Brainiac 5: We always have a choice, Kal-El. Your father didn't have to care for you the way he did. And still he made that choice everyday he was with you. He chose to be your protector, just as you've chosen to be the Earth's protector. Nobody forced that on you. Yet you embraced it. We all choose our own fate.
- Clark: He's always so Oliver. I didn't know he needed me.
- Brainiac 5: But he does.
- Clark: Well, I don't know how not returning his calls amounts to some darkness within me.
- Brainiac 5: You don't see it? The darkness is the past. And you hold on to it, and you dwell. You punish yourself and everyone around you for past mistakes.
- Clark: We don't have the privilege of past mistakes even if we don't expect perfection from ourselves, the rest of the world does. You heard what they said.
- Brainiac 5: Then help Oliver be who he can be. Today, tomorrow. Be there for him now, and stop punishing him for his past with your silence and your distance. Let it go.
- Brainiac 5: Correct me, if I'm mistaken, but you care about Lois, don't you?
- Clark: All I've ever done is protect her after what happened to Lana.
- Brainiac 5: Interesting outcome. Lois doesn't seem especially protected. You spend so much time dwelling on the darkness of what happened in the past, you're missing the present that's right in front of your eyes.
- Brainiac 5: Not every man is destined to find a woman like Lois.
- Clark: She's definitely one of a kind. I know why you sent me here now.
- Brainiac 5: I had intended to be here with you. But you interfered with the ring.
- Clark: You wanted me to see how things would be with Lois. And the... flying.
- Brainiac 5: I wanted you to see that your darkness lies not only dwelling upon the past, but in fearing the future.
- Brainiac 5: A hero is made in the moment. Not from questioning the past, or fearing what's to come. Just remember that, Kal-El.
Notes
Edit
- Brainiac 5 was previously mentioned by Legion of Super-Heroes member, Imra Ardeen. Rokk says that they will try to reprogram Brainiac into something useful, and Imra hopes that "Brainiac 5" will be a little more friendly.
- In the season eight finale, Rokk told Clark that Brainiac was "gone". Since this Brainiac is much different than the evil one, this was not exactly a lie.
- When the Legion mentioned Brainiac 5, he would have been Brainiac's 5th incarnation on the show: The Milton Fine who Clark defeated in the fortress, the Fine Clark stabbed with the kryptonian dagger, the one who Clark electrocuted, Brainiac possesing Chloe, and finally Brainiac 5.
- In the comics even though Cosmic Boy was the Leader of the team, He placed Brainiac 5 as the second in command strategic commander of the team and in Superman: Secret Origin #2 , Brainiac 5 said that Cosmic Boy put him in charge of Safety and Security. Often times Cosmic Boy would be off planet and Brainy would be left in charge.
- The fact Brianiac 5 claims to have created the Legion Flight Rings and their means of time-travel, this brings up an interesting time-paradox, as the Legion members who helped defeate the original Brainiac, already traveled backwards in time with their Legion Rings. This implies that perhaps when they reformed Brainiac into Brainiac 5, they must have used time travel to go back from their "current time" and dropped him off at an earlier point in their history, which would have allowed for him to create the the rings.
