The relationship between Clark, Lex and Lana has been a very complicated one.

[edit] Season One

Clark sets his eyes on Lana. After years of spying on her by a telescope aimed at her house, Clark finally began a conversation with her while she was visiting her parents' graves, and since then the two have remained close. Clark saved Lex, who proves to be a very valuable friend, often setting up dates between Clark and Lana. Though most of these dates often ended up in disaster, most of the time the cause was Clark running off to defeat a meteor freak. Lana knew that Clark was keeping a lot from her. However, through the first few seasons, the three remained close.

[edit] Other Seasons

Clark and Lex were best friends through season four. During the beginning of season five, Lex put the Kents and Lana in danger by unleashing three meteor freaks on them in an attempt to learn Clark's secret. After this incident, things became rocky between Clark and Lex. They did not become full on enemies until late in season five when Lex started going out with Lana. Even during this time, Lex wanted "to find some common ground" with Clark. Towards the end of season six, Clark and Lex were involved in a cave-in in the episode Nemesis. Clark became buried under rocks but Lex came to his rescue.

Lex showed no interest in Lana up until season four, possibly because his and Clark's friendship was slipping away and Lana seemed to be a means for Lex to get closer to Clark. Their relationship and unsuccessful marriage aside, Lex and Lana were business partners in early seasons and Lex often tried to give Lana a bit of a back bone in the business world and in life, such as teaching her martial arts.

[edit] Notes

  • The trio is often described as Smallville's "Top Three", with stories being mainly centered around the three of them while secondary characters (Chloe Sullivan, Pete Ross, etc) are mainly seen as their backup.
  • Ironically, despite the initial closeness of the relationship, in the comics Lex is Superman's arch-nemesis and Lana is rarely mentioned.
