Oliver tries to help a young street girl, Mia Dearden, get out of her dangerous life by offering to train her, but Mia double crosses him. Lois asks Clark to help her land a job as an on-air television host, but the two are shocked when the station wants to hire them as a team.

Back at the Daily Planet, Chloe stops by to visit Clark where he tells her that not only did he and Lois get the news anchor job as a team, but also that they will be doing online dating as their first story. Clark is more concerned, however, about finding the Kandorians, but so far he has found nothing. Chloe notes that Tess has increased her security, and they figure that she's somehow involved. When Clark offers to help, Chloe points out that he returned to his job as reporter to reinforce his cover and he needs to focus on that. Clark goes to talk to Lois, who is trying to pick out the exact words for the online dating form and suggests he do the same. He looks at what she wrote and notes that she has exaggerated some things and downplayed others. Clark insists there are things about her that would attract great guys but can not seem to come up with anything specific.
At the manor, Stuart warns Tess that someone is trying to breach the firewalls. She tells him to take care of it or she will terminate him. She then hosts a meeting to tell the shareholders that the company will make major funds by teaming with the RAO Corporation. She shows them a blueprint of the world's first self-sufficient solar tower, one with enough solar energy to power Metropolis. Major Zod then walks in and congratulates her. After Tess notes that she didn't expect to see him, Zod informs everyone that he's the new chairman of RAO and vows that the tower will change the world.
After the meeting is over, Tess talks to Zod. Zod tells her he has been working to make LuthorCorp the most advanced company on Earth. In return, he wants the one who betrayed them: the Blur. He explains they got a sample of the Blur's blood after spreading the zombie plague, but Tess arranged for the samples to be destroyed. Zod figures she wants to use the Blur as a bargaining chip, and Tess admits that she plans to be equal partners with Zod. Zod warns her that she will never be an equal partner with a Kandorian, then leaves. He tells Tess' security guard, a undercover Kandorian, to force Tess to tell him what she knows.
At the Watchtower, Chloe tries to get through Tess' firewalls, but Stuart continues to block her.
Lois goes on her blind date while Clark watches from the booth. He admits that her date is a lucky man. They talk, and Clark wonders if she would accept his offer of a second date. Before she can respond, however, Oliver arrives and explains that he paid off Lois' blind date so he could take over.
The blind date continues, and Oliver explains the situation with Mia. He figures Lois' audience would like to see a date with Metropolis' most eligible bachelor, and Lois reluctantly agrees to let him continue. He goes on to say the thing he loves about her most is that she's still in his life and his heart. Lois calls for the check, leaves with Oliver, and then dumps her earpiece, leaving Clark baffled. Out on the balcony, she demands an explanation, and Oliver says that he isn't going to hide his feelings any longer. He considers her the best part of his life and Lois tells him that she loves him…as a dear friend. Oliver realizes she has feelings for Clark. He says he's happy that she knows what she wants but it hurts that it is not him. He kisses her on the forehead and wishes her good night.
Back at the studio, the producer congratulates Clark and shows him the new promo poster of him and Lois. Disappointed, Clark figures Lois has gone back to Oliver.
Later, Tess looks at the plans of the solar tower and vows that Zod will respect her. Zod's undercover soldier comes in and reveals he's a Kandorian. He threatens to kill her if she doesn't tell him where the Blur is.
Zod is drinking coffee at a café and finds an envelope on his table. Inside is the security guard's dog tag, covered in blood. He looks up to see Tess across the street, tipping him a salute before departing.
Mia is on a street corner dressed as a prostitute when Oliver arrives and offers her a lift. She gladly accepts a position at his side.
Clark nervously returns to the office, and Lois tells him that the producers decided to go with Clark's blind date Catherine as their new solo host. Clark finally grabs her and kisses her, and Lois kisses him back.

- A crossfire is military terminology for "converging fire from one or more positions"; it'a also come to refer to "a lively exchange of ideas, opinions, etc."
- Crossfire was a debate TV program on CNN that aired from 1982 to 2005 on CNN. It featured two pundits - a liberal and a conservative - who then proceeded to argue and debate on camera. In this episode, Lois and Clark audition to be come co-hosts of a TV morning show where they are expected to argue and debate on camera.

- Tess Mercer is called a "savior" for the second time, the first was in Injustice by the Orb, while in this episode it is Major Zod.
- This is the first time Clark Kent and Lois Lane knowingly kiss each other without any memory swipes or disguises.
- This is the first time since Rabid that all of the main cast members appear.
- This episode marks the first appearance of Mia Dearden in the Smallville universe.
- The sequence where Clark steps in front of the bullets to save Lois and Oliver is a homage to the similar sequence in the Superman Returns film.

- The first time Lois and Clark kissed was in Hydro when he was disguised as Green Arrow, and the second was in Crimson, when they were both under the influence with red kryptonite.
- Stuart Campbell makes his second appearance in this episode, and seemingly joins forces with Chloe.
- Lois references the first time that Clark stood her up, which occurred in Echo
- Zod is the new chairman and CEO of the RAO Corporation, which he's apparently been doing since he was last seen in Rabid
- Oliver references his downward spiral, which began in Doomsday and continued through Roulette
- Lois jokes with Clark during her "date," saying that he sounded like her mother on prom night. This is ironic, since she told him her mother died when she was six years old in Gone. More than likely, this was a joke instead of continuity error.
- The solar towers shown during Tess' meeting with the board are also seen in Lois Lane's dream.
