Diana of Themyscira (also known as Diana Prince) is the Amazon Princess of Paradise Island, worldwide known as the superheroine Wonder Woman.

The Amazon society, which is mentioned in Greek mythology, is exclusively female and also very warlike and proud but also brave. Growing up not just as any Amazon but the rebellious daughter of the rigid and iron-willed Queen Hippolyta, Diana's life changes when she meets Steve Trevor, with whom, despite what she has always been taught, she makes fast friends and develops her first crush. However, when he is deported to the USA by her mother and she never came back, the young princess set on her trail and left Themyscira to find her. A search which, since her first arrival, led her to help those who cannot help themselves.

She makes her first appearance in the fifth digital/print comic Smallville Season 11 story arc Olympus and becomes a recurring character.

After Hades' attack at Washington D.C., Diana fights alongside Superman to defeat the God of Death and then decided to stay and become the capital's own superheroine, an agent of D.E.O. and the representative of her home island, Themyscira.

Diana as a pre-teenager.

Diana is a tall, beautiful, young woman with thick long black hair, Caucasian skin, and deep ice-blue eyes. Her intense beauty also comes with commanding presence and an aristocratic nature. She seems to have inherited a lot of her mother's characteristics as they are quite similar in their appearance.

Wwteen

Diana as a teenager.

When she was a child living on the island, she had the appearance of an ancient Greek warrior. She wore a small black top with some kind of golden armor on it and an armored black and red skirt. She also wore a small pair of silver bracelets on her wrists and silver earrings. She also leaves her navel exposed.

Some years later when Diana became a little bit older, the top she used to wear is now longer, black and red, on her back, and the golden armor on it was bigger, covering her right shoulder and forming something like a small "W" on her chest. Her armored skirt was more red than black and there were some small gold details on it with a golden belt on her waist. Diana also wore some golden arm jewellery along with her silver earrings and the bracelets on her wrists. She doesn't seem to wear any shoes as she has been seen walking barefoot on the island.

As a teenager Diana wears the same top, only smaller, leaving her navel exposed and the golden armor is bigger, covering both her shoulders and forming a golden eagle on her chest. Her armored skirt remains the same and the only accessoires she wears is her silver bracelets. Instead of being barefoot she also wears red thigh high boots.

When she appears in Washington, DC,  she wears white pants with side pockets, white and sometimes black long top, which she has put inside her pants, white leather short cropped jacket with its inside lining and its collar being black and its sleeves being folded up. She wears two black belts, one on her waist and one on her left leg, black fingerless gloves and leather boots. She has her hair up in a ponytail but she has also been seen letting her hair down. She also wears a pair of silver bracelets on her wrists above her gloves and also carries a globe with her, which is attached on her belts.

As a civilian, her clothing is very simple. She wears a blue long-sleeved blouse with ankle length blue skinny jeans and black high heel shoes. She also lets her hair down.

As an agent of D.E.O. Diana wears black pants, a black and white top with D.E.O.'s black skull logo on it, black jacket with side pockets and D.E.O.'s initials on its sleeves. She wears a white belt with side pockets and D.E.O.'s initials on it, black fingerless gloves and leather boots. She also wears red earrings and aviator sunglasses with orange lenses and silver frames (or regular glasses) and has her hair up in a ponytail.

When Diana goes to fight Hades and his army of the undead, she takes on a more familiar Wonder Woman look - a set of Amazonian battle armor previously worn by her mother.

Her costume includes a dark red top with a sterling silver eagle emblem on her chest, sterling silver belt and trademark tiara with a ruby star in the center of each one, dark red culottes under the extension of her top, a blue-black star-spangled armored skirt and dark red thigh boots with silver details. She also wears a dark red shoulder armor, with sterling silver details, on her right arm and her usual silver bracelets on her wrists, although the bracelet she wears on her right wrist is covered by the extension of the shoulder armor.

She carries with her a sword, her lasso of truth tied in her belt and a silver and red shield with a "W" logo on it in her left arm. She also lets her hair down.

Personality

Smvls11 cv16

Diana, the Amazon Princess.

Diana was raised on Themyscira, a strictly feminist society where males were neither needed nor wanted. As such, Diana displayed initial hostility towards Steve Trevor when they first met. However, she was more protective and open-minded than most Amazons, as she hid him from the others and asked him to be her "secret friend". She is also a lot more empathic and sweet than her tradition-obsessed sisters, and proves to properly know the valor of another being's life and the difference between good and evil, that transcends the rules of civilizations. Maybe because of this, after she arrives in Washington DC, she begins to act like a good Samaritan, despite not considering herself a "vigilante". (Olympus)

Diana is also shown to be rather self-sufficient as she hunts for her own food at a young age and is able to kill a boar, as well as make a football by herself. She has clear sense of identity knowing who she is and where she comes from, and because of this she declares herself to be proud of her origins regardless of the differences in mentality with her sisters.

After first arriving in what the Amazons call "Man's World," Diana begins to form her own impressions of it with their foreign value system and prejudices well intact. She observes their contradictory attitude and seemingly double-standards. She also observes their choices of clothing and eventually overcomes her initial bias towards men to develop an acceptance and respect for the integrity and virtue that some of them possess.

Diana refers to any other woman as "sister".

Powers & Abilities

DLT

Diana lifts a tank.

  • Super Strength - Diana seemingly possesses enough strength equivalent to Superman. She is able to defeat a magical being with ease, create a little tornado just by whirling a chandelier, lift a person with one hand, as well as a tank with both hands and a pair of chains. Even during her early years she is shown to be extremely strong, probably as much as an adult and, as a teenager, she proves to be the mightiest of the Amazons, defeating Artemis with ease. According to herself she got stronger as she grew older, confirming this, as an adult, she is shown to be able to snap Faust's neck with a punch and to destroy the steel bars which blocked her arms just by contract her muscles. (Olympus)
DSS

Diana super speeds alongside Superman.

  • Super Speed - Apparently Diana has a high level of supersonic speed, probably almost comparable to Impulse or Superman. In fact, she is able to keep up with the latter and run on the surface of the water. She can move and or react at speeds that far exceed the speed of the sound barrier. Even in her first appearance, Diana has proven, after saving Martha Kent, to be able to escape without being intercepted by the police and, as stated by Lois Lane, she moves quickly all over Washington to perform multiple saves. (Olympus)
  • Super Intelligence - As an Amazon from Paradise Island, Diana lived the majority of her life far from any kind of civilization, however, she is shown to learn very fast since she was able to craft a football just by hearing the description Steve Trevor gave her. Years later, she's shown while creating a flying machine and, when she first speaks with Lois, she proves to possess vast knowledge of the outside world and its inhabitants. (Olympus)
Tumblr msb27g7dli1qfgee3o3 1280

Diana is unharmed during a fight with the D.E.O.

  • Invulnerability - Diana states that she is bulletproof. She can also survive cannon fire from a tank and explosions, and goes through a stained glass window and the ceiling of a building, unscathed. (Olympus)
  • Healing Factor - Diana is regenerative on a superhuman level and can heal or recover from wounds almost instantly. After she is hurt by a harpy, the wound heals automatically without a trace in a matter of seconds and she is able to leap away as if nothing had happened. (Olympus)
  • Super Stamina: Diana can run, exercise, or take part in strenuous actions for days on end without getting tired; she never sweats unless she battles magical creatures. (Olympus) As she later states, she's even able to tolerate and "embrace" pain; in fact, she withstood all of Bones tortures and was still ready for battle immediately after.
SHD

Diana's "hearing of the gods".

  • Super Senses - Diana demonstrates superhuman sensory perception even at an early age, hearing her older sisters coming at the beach where she found Steve. While growing up these abilities are strongly increased: in her first appearance she could hear and go to rescue Martha Kent, despite being blocks away from her, and then describe the movements made by Lois, thanks to the noise she made while following her. Her view is so enhanced that she can see bullets in slow motion (similar to Clark Time) and deflect their trajectories. Finally, her sense of smell is amplified enough to make her a formidable huntress and inform her of the arrival of something nearby, before other senses can detect it. (Olympus)
Tumblr inline mq6try36Kl1qz4rgp

Diana deflecting bullets with her bracelets.

  • Super Dexterity - Diana possesses superhuman agility as her reflexes are fast enough to deflect bullets. She can also perform movements so fast that it is hard to be seen with a naked-eye. While facing flying magical creatures, Diana demonstrates she can move faster than them and after a long fight she receives just a single wound. (Olympus)
DSL

Diana super leaps.

  • Super Leap - Diana can combine her super strength and dexterity to perform highly accurate super jumps. During her first appearance, she is shown to leap up and down from rooftops. She is also seen leaping out of a building, from a hole in the ceiling. (Olympus)
  • Longevity: Since her mother, Hippolyta, does not appear to aged to much after reaching maturity and lived for millennia, it is implied that Amazons, including Diana, might be immortal or at least possess far greater longevity than normal humans. (Olympus)

As an inhabitant of Paradise Island, Diana is an excellent warrior trained in several combat styles, hunting, fishing, tolerating pain and many other survival techniques, and proves to master them all at high levels even as a child. She is also able to use simple objects such as candle holders or chains, as weapons to defend herself against opponents.

2osy

Diana using a chain as a weapon.

  • Skilled Hand-to-hand Combatant - Diana is able to single-handedly defeat several armed men, many of them being much more muscular and bigger than her, without the use of any weapons, with the exception of her globe. She also uses the silver bracelets she wears on her wrists to deflect bullets. She even battles and takes down an entire tank with just a chain, which she uses as a rope/whip. Even at a young age she proves to be a better fighter than many of her older sisters and, including Artemis, as an adult, seems to be nearly indomitable in combat. (Olympus)
  • Acrobatics: Diana has displayed on many occasions that she is an expert in acrobatics, and often uses this skill while fighting, evading enemy fire and scaling rooftops. (Olympus)

Vulnerabilities

Smallville 16-08

A harpy injures Diana.

  • Magic - Diana states that the only thing that can hurt her is the magic of the gods. A creature sent by Felix Faust, was able to wound her despite her skin being bulletproof.

Wonder Woman as she appears in the comics.

Born on Paradise Island to a race of Amazon Warriors; Diana is a princess, an ambassador and a warrior. Using her divine powers, granted by the Gods of Olympus, Wonder Woman came to America to fight for peace, justice and truth. Wonder Woman is Earth's greatest female superhero.

As one of the longest continually published comic book characters, Wonder Woman’s history has changed somewhat over the course of her various depictions. In her original golden age appearances certain aspects of the character were introduced which have remained consistent to the modern day. She is an Amazon, raised on Paradise Island (or Themyscira) who journeys to man’s world on a mission of peace. As a superhero the character obviously fulfilled the role of an icon for readers, but so too did her secret identity, Diana Prince. The character was created in a time when different cultural and societal norms existed in North America. Thus although by the modern depiction her accomplishments at the time seem ordinary, in that era they were more so. Diana Prince was originally an army nurse, but quickly attained the rank of lieutenant in Army Intelligence. This was partially a creative convenience so that she could be close to both Steve Trevor and received information which she needed to pursue her superheroics. In the real world though, this role in Army intelligence, even as the secretary to General Darnell, was still a rare position for a woman to hold in society. At this time as well, the character had her only real sidekicks in her history in the form of Etta Candy and the Holliday Girls. These characters gave the Wonder Woman a degree more of levity while also allowing the writers to focus on some issues which were more related to women. During that time she gained a big gallery of villains such as Cheetah and Doctor Psycho and she also became a founding member of the original Justice League of America .

This superhero era didn’t last long though. The character was mired in the story lines from the golden age and especially her attachment to Steve Trevor. The difference with Wonder Woman though is that the character had managed to stay continually published since the golden age and did not get a science fiction retelling in the 1950s and 1960s. This left the character somewhat stilled mired in the past and eventually it was decided that something would be done to break her free of it. When the decision was made though it was decided that she would not have a science fiction background as it would break too much from her background as an Amazon, but that she would be slightly re-imagined as a martial arts based character, more along the lines of Batman. This would allow her to keep her somewhat unique background story, while also being more contemporary and popular. A much stronger emphasis was also placed on her appearance, as her somewhat drab civilian clothes and costume from the golden era were replaced with contemporary fashions of the time. In addition she opened a fashion boutique in trendy Greenwhich Village. This has led some to describe this era of the character as the “Mod Girl Wonder Woman.” While this version of the character did not prove to be consistently popular over the course of her brief run, it did leave some lasting impact on the character once she returned to her usual appearance. Following this she sought out more ambitious careers, for instance as a translator for the United Nations, or as a NASA astronaut and eventually moved back to Army Intelligence where she eventually got promoted to major. Also this period provided the opportunity to sever her from a dependence on Steve Trevor for her stories and her stories for the first time in her publication history became much more in line with what is considered typical of the super hero medium.

The modern age of the character can be tied to the reboot of the character following Crisis on Infinite Earths. As opposed to the past where the character would get retold origins which would try to make her more contemporary, now she got one which tied her much more strongly to the stories of the ancient gods. For the first time Diana enters man’s world not knowing how to speak English already, and is forced to master the language on her own. This version of the character also reimagined Steve Trevor as a father figure for Diana as opposed to a romantic counterpart. After a long space voyage, when she returned home she was forced to work at a fast food restaurant to pay her bills and made friends with a number of people in her “civilian identity.” This built up to the revelation of betrayal of her mother, and of Artemis taking over as Wonder Woman for a short time, but this was soon reversed. This period also introduced Cassandra Sandsmark, who would go on to become Wonder Girl at a later point. During the events of Infinite Crisis Diana had to fight Superman who was being controlled by Maxwell Lord . Battered after their battle, Diana has managed to stop Superman by using her lasso of truth on Lord, and the only option which she is given to stopping Maxwell is to kill him, and realizing this is the case, she does so. This created a controversy both within comics and in the real world, as both fans and characters alike debated the morality of this decision. In comics this also led to strained relations between her and Superman and her and Batman and with the addition of the events of Identity Crisis, helped to lead to the breakup of the Justice League of America at a crucial point right before the main events of Infinite Crisis were about to begin.

Wonder Woman #600

Following the events of Infinite Crisis, she disappeared for a year in order to rediscover herself, and took part briefly in the events of 52. In the span of One Year Later, she was re-imagined once again and was forgiven by Batman and Superman. Batman helped her establish a role at the Department of Metahuman Affairs under the name of Diana Prince (paying homage to her golden age alter ego). She worked alongside Tom Tresser and eventually became romantically involved with him. Her latest series was relaunched with issue 600, which was used as a chance to reinvent the character as she discovers herself with no memories and in a new costume. This was a short lived experiment as the entire DC lineup was soon to be re-imagined into the new 52, though certain aspects of her redesigned costume remained.

Wonder Woman in the New 52.

In the New 52 it has been revealed how the Amazons replenish their numbers (they do so by kidnapping sailors and using them for procreation before killing them) as well as the fact of Wonder Woman’s divine lineage. Hippolyta revealed Diana's earlier origin story to be a lie, spread among the Amazons to protect Diana from the wrath of Hera, who is known for hunting and killing several illegitimate offspring of Zeus. Her mother had an affair with Zeus, which resulted in her birth. The first of these half-mortal siblings to reveal himself to Wonder Woman was her older half-brother, Lennox, who could transform himself into living, marble-like stone and, before his death, was the father of Cassandra Sandsmark (Wonder Girl). Despite the fact that Zeus is her father it does not necessarily remove other facts about her origin from canon (for instance the blessings of the gods). In the Zero month of the new 52, the story for Diana focused on the fact that she had been trained by Ares when she was a teenager though she eventually rebelled against him. When Diana first came to man's world she encountered a group attacking the Pentagon. Because of this she befriended Barbara Minerva who was working there on ancient antiquities and Barbara helped her acclimatize to man's world. Moreover, Diana does not have a secret identity. Wonder Woman also is one of the founding members and the first female member of the Justice League.

In the Wonder Woman series, after Zeus had gone missing, the Greek messenger god, Hermes, entrusts Wonder Woman with the protection of Zola, a young woman, who is pregnant with Zeus's child, from Hera, seething with jealousy and determined to kill the child. The realization of her mother's lie angered Diana and she decided to divorce herself from the Amazons - who had already begun to turn on her for bringing Hera's wrath down on them. She renounced the name Diana, and swore never to return to the island again. Unfortunately, not long after Diana left, Hera came for her vengeance, and though she could not bring herself to kill Hippolyta, she could not forgive them either. Feeling regret at giving up the only real family she had, Wonder Woman returned to Themyscira to find the Amazons absent, and her mother turned to stone.. The story then focuses on Wonder Woman's quest to rescue Zola from Hades, who had abducted her and taken her to Hell. After saving Zola from Hades, Wonder Woman tries to protect her further from Apollo, as it is prophesied that one of Zeus' children will be his downfall whom Apollo considers to be Zola's child. Wonder Woman receives the power of flight by one of Hermes' feathers piercing her thigh and Zola's baby is stolen by Hermes at the end and given to Demeter.

It is shown that when Wonder Woman removes her bracelets she goes into a "berzerker rage" of power, meaning that the bracelets are what protects her opponents from her intense power. On occasions Wonder Woman has employed a magical sword of unknown origin. In Wonder Woman #15, Hephaestus modifies Diana's bracelets so that she can manifest two short swords from them during battle.

Wonder Woman and Superman.

Diana is currently in a romantic relationship with fellow Leaguer, Superman, with their union is the new status quo. They shared their first kiss in Justice League #12. Because of the relationship, Wonder Woman appears, besides the Wonder Woman and the Justice League comic book series, in the new Superman/Wonder Woman series.

Diana talks with her friend Hessia about why Clark is hiding their relationship, with Diana thinking he might be ashamed. Her friend knows he has been trained to hide everything. Then Diana says it is an inherent difference between them her openness and his timidity. Later, Clark and Diana start their date night. When confronted by Diana about hiding their relationship, Clark talks about giving 'them' everything and this is something he wants to keep just to them for now. Diana wants to show Clark that he needs training in how to fight, because he isn't a true warrior. And to show that, she brandishes a sword and almost slashes him.

Despite being a couple, the two heroes continue to save the world together, battling an odd storm at sea intercut. Superman and Diana are streaking to the storm together and then they decide that Superman will take care of the storm and Diana will help out a plane in danger nearby. While they save people, who are in danger, someone sends to Cat Grant, Clark's partner from clarkcatropolis.com, some photos of the two Leaguers kissing, revealing their secret relationship. Cat decides to broke the story of the Superman/Wonder Woman romance. Diana is hoisting this plane up, keeping it from crashing, only to have Superman get punched through it from whatever was at the bottom of the ocean. The US military sees Superman break through the plane and assume that Wonder Woman and Superman have destroyed it on purpose. So a nearby battleship opens up its guns onto Diana. She flies to the ship and rips it turret off, destroying it. Suddenly, Doomsday appears in the middle of the off-shore storm as the one who hit Superman. With Superman out for the count, Diana faced off against him. Just as Diana, arms broken, is about to accept the killing blow from Doomsday, Superman returns lifting the ship out of the water and after that Doomsday mysteriously disappeared. Diana's description let's Clark know that this was Doomsday she was fighting. They head to the Fortress so they can confirm it by looking into the Phantom Zone. Superman is rightly afraid of Doomsday who he says is simply 'death'. But Wonder Woman doesn't know Doomsday. Diana takes Superman to Hephaestus to see if the Smith can make Clark something to help him in battle. Initially, Diana asks him for a 'weapon' which seems odd for Clark. But later they say it would be armor. Hephaestus attack Superman, wanting to prove that Superman is worthy of being there and Clark easily parries it. Apollo and Strife also show up, with Apollo questioning Diana's choice in love. Soon after that, Superman engages into a fight with his girlfriend's brother and even though Apollo seems to have the upper hand, Superman defeats him. Later when Zod escapes from the Phantom Zone Superman and Wonder Woman arrive together and Zod is trapped within the coils of the magic lasso. After they transport Zod to the Fortress of Soltitude, Wonder Woman decides that now is the right time to give Clark his Christmas gift, the gift of time, a time where they can just be with each other and not worry about the world. Later, Diana asks Superman why he continues to be 'Clark'. Why not get rid of that identity and be just Superman and use his powers all the time, something that brings him joy. Clark respond that he remains Clark because it reminds him of the lives of regular people. After that, Diana is confused about her relationship and goes to her friend Hessia to talk things out. Hessia reminds Diana that there is more to her life than simply this relationship and that she isn't defined by Superman. Looking for some distance to mull things over as well as checking in on the Amazons, she heads to Themiscyra to talk to her petrified mother. Diana decides to leave Themyscira and immediately gets a call on the comm-link about Superman fighting Zod and the also recently freed Faora and so she rushes to his side. The two couples begin to battle each other and Diana presses the red hot blade of her sword, sizzling from Zod's heat vision to Faora's face. With the fight at an impasse, Zod grabs Superman and threatens to kill him. He will allow Superman to live if Diana allows them to leave alive as well. Diana agrees leading to a strategic retreat. After that, Superman and Diana head to Olympus to pick up the weapons that Hephaetus has been crafting for them. He not only outfits them in armor but gives them his 'invisible chariot' so the two can sneak up on Zod and Faora. The Hephaestus armor turns out to be a weapon, absorbing the physical energy of the Zoners' attacks and then being able to be detonated like a bomb, with the trigger being for Clark and Diana to hold hands. It turns out that Zod wants to open up a huge Zone gate to free everyone and everything. Weakened and trapped in the nuclear reactor, Clark comes up with a sort of last-ditch plan. Diana's magic sword can split an atom causing a reaction with the remaining fissionable material in the core. The resulting nuclear explosion will destroy the Zone gate but it could kill them. Knowing this might kill them, Clark professes his love for Diana.

Notes

  • L

    Agent Diana Prince.

Wonder Woman is the most recognizable female character published by DC Comics and along with Superman and Batman are known as the DC Trinity. She is also the last member of the Trinity to make her debut in the Smallville universe.
  • In addition, she is also the oldest continuously drawn female superhero ever.
  • Like Batman, Wonder Woman couldn't make an appearance in the TV series because of legal issues, but finally made her debut in Smallville through the comic book continuation of the show in the story-arc Olympus, like Batman did in Detective.
  • Bryan Q. Miller stated in an interview that Diana won't be known as Wonder Woman yet when she first appears. Regarding her suit, he also stated: "Does she have the bracelets? Oh, yes. Like you see in the cover. And pants, of course. Regarding the rest of her "traditional" look - something tells me she might find her way to a lasso and some armor by the time all is said and done!".
  • Bryan Q. Miller also stated that Diana's look in her appearances in Smallville: Season Eleven is partly based on her Agent Diana Prince look, during the story-arc where she was an agent at the Department of Metahuman Affairs and partly on the new costume she wore, when the character was first rebooted in the pages of Wonder Woman #600.
  • Bryan Q. Miller confirmed on his twitter that Diana is older than Clark, but not as old as Lex, Oliver and Bruce.
  • Smallville's version of Diana strongly resembles actress Angelina Jolie.
  • During the third part of Olympus Bones baptizes Diana "Prince" while keeps her under his custody.
  • Wonder Woman's ability and desire to fight for gender equality has made her a longtime feminist icon. As a matter of fact, the prominent feminist Gloria Steinem chose her for the cover of the debut issue of Ms. Magazine in 1972 with the headline "Wonder Woman For President." [1]
