Dinah Drake-Lance was the original Black Canary, a member of the Justice Society of America, and the mother of Dinah Lance.

Early life[]

Very little is known about the life of Dinah Drake-Lance. At some point, she became the mystery woman, known as "Black Canary" and a member of the Justice Society of America. She also had a daughter named Dinah Lance. According to Chloe Sullivan, Dinah Lance came from a family of cops.[1] It is unknown if this means that Dinah Drake-Lance came from a family of cops, or married into one. Drake-Lance's heroic career ended, when she was framed by a government agency.

Season Nine[]

When Clark Kent was taken to the JSA Brownstone, he saw a painting of Dinah Drake-Lance. It is unknown if she is still alive.

Dinah Drake, AKA "Black Canary", first appeared in Flash Comics #86 (August 1947), as an villain, but is soon revealed to have merely infiltrated a criminal gang. In Flash Comics #92 (February 1948), she began getting her own stories, which fleshed out the character. She also got her own love interest in Police Detective Larry Lance. In All Star Comics #41 (June–July 1948), Dinah joined the Justice Society of America, becoming the second (the first being Wonder Woman) superheroine to do so.

In 1969, Larry is killed, and Dinah (a native of Earth-Two) decides to relocate to Earth-One, to start over. This was later retconned in Justice League of America #219-220 (October and November 1983), where the Dinah now living on Earth-One was revealed as actually being the daughter of Dinah Drake (who had been dead for years) and Larry Lance.

Notes[]

  • Geoff Johns confirmed her as being the mother of Dinah Lance. Originally, Dinah Lance was going to be in Absolute Justice, but the actress was unavailable.[2]
  • It is unknown if the Young Woman, shown dying in Wesley Dodds' arms, in the archive footage of the JSA members, is supposed to be Dinah Drake-Lance.
  • The introduction of Dinah Drake-Lance/Black Canary midly retcons the episode Siren, where the "Black Canary" name is coined by Clark Kent for Dinah Lance. Though, it is possible that the Smallville version of Dinah Drake-Lance used a different moniker.
  • In the Season Seven episode Action, there is a Black Canary action figure on display in Ben Meyers' apartment.
