"This vessel may have once been called Lois, but now it serves Isis."
— Isis to Clark. [[Isis]]

Isis is the Egyptian goddess of love, life, healing and the underworld. She was trapped in an amulet by Set for centuries, until she possessed Lois Lane.

She tried to use Clark Kent as a sacrifice to resurrect her husband, Osiris, but failed and Clark was able to imprison her yet again.

Power and Abilities[]

As an ancient goddess of the old world, Isis - once incarnated - possesses an arsenal of powerful abilities which make her a physical match for the likes of Kryptonians and Martians, as well as a set of potent magical spells - including knowledge of how to reincarnate dead souls.

  • Super Strength: Possession by Isis' essence endowed Lois' body with considerable super-strength - sufficient to rip open a metal hanger door as well as knock a security guard across several feet. Later, she exerted even more strength when she single-handedly pushed Clark up to a dozen feet away.
  • Super Speed: Isis was able to disappear to a nearby rooftop in the time it took for Clark to save Cat Grant from one of her energy bolts, take her to a coffee shop and then return at super speed. However her speed is not comparable to that of a Kryptonian, as when Clark was moving at super speed she remained slowed.

Isis takes flight.

  • Flight: Although she did not overly rely upon this ability while she possessed Lois' body, Isis could easily fly at high velocities in a manner similar to that of Martians and mature Kryptonians. Interestingly, her flight pattern created an aura of yellow energy once she took to the air.
  • Telescopic Vision: When Isis uses this ability her eyes match that of cat. She demonstrated telescopic vision when she escaped from Clark and spied on him from afar on a rooftop and night vision as she was able to see Clark perfectly in the pitch black of night . Also when she uses this ability everything she sees is in a shade of yellow.

  • Telekinesis: Isis is able to rip away the opening of Osiris' sarcophagus and suspend Clark in the air while she conjured magic ropes to bind him.
  • Telepathy: She was able to read Clark Kent's mind and insulted him telling him that he doesn't know what love is and he doesn't truly love Lois Lane. She was also able to sense Oliver Queen's presence.

Isis blasts energy at Oliver.

  • Magic: Isis held keen knowledge of magic. As a goddess of the afterlife, she was particularly adept at spells of resurrection - such as restoring Osiris' heart and attempting to reincarnate his soul into Clark's body. She could also conjure golden ropes strong enough to bind even Clark.
    • Energy Projection: Isis demonstrated this four times. The first was when she was about to kill Cat Grant but was saved by Clark. The second and third was in a battle with Oliver Queen and fourth was when Clark threatened to destroy Osiris' heart.
  • Empathy: Isis knew that Oliver missed Chloe. She stated that he was brave even though he was lonely. She knew every time that he tried to fill the void the lonely he became.
  • Immortality: As a deity, Isis' original body was exempt from death - never aging beyond her prime or falling to senility or illness. Presumably, her spirit endowed Lois' body with this same power upon possessing her, although she was exorcised from her vessel before any significant time past.
  • Pyrokinesis - With hands gesture, Isis ignited the pyres in Metropolis Museum, preparing to bring Osiris back.
  • Cosmic Awareness - Being thousands of years old, as well as a goddess, Isis possesses greater knowledge about the mankind and the world than other beings. She declared that what Clark knows about love, in comparition to her, is but the wisdom of a child.

Vulnerabilities[]

Isis was dependent on sunlight being shone through the Amulet of Isis in order to be able to possess whoever was holding it, such as Lois Lane.

In addition, if sunlight, or Clark's solar-powered heat vision, was shone through the amulet, Isis's spirit would leave her vessel and return to the amulet.

Early life[]

She was once an immortal pagan goddess of Egypt long since forgotten. During their rule, she was married to Osiris, god of death and she once marched to the ends of the Earth to help him. She is responsible for bringing the great god Ra to his knees. Her husband was murdered by his brother Set out of jealousy and his body was cut into a thousand pieces to be doomed to the Underworld for all time. Isis tried to resurrect Osiris by recovering his pieces but could never find his heart. Set then imprisoned her in the amulet.

Isis holds Osiris's heart.

While Clark is stunned, Isis/Lois suddenly flies away after declaring that she is now Isis. Then she enters to the Metropolis museum by ripping open a metal door and she heads towards a crate containing Osiris’ heart and rips off the lid. When Clark arrives at the Watchtower and tells Oliver that Isis/Lois has disappeared with Osiris' heart, both Tess and Oliver inform him that she might be headed for the Metropolis Museum to reunite Osiris’ heart with his body.

At the museum Isis prepares to bring Osiris back to life, but she opens the sarcophagus only to find that it is full of dirt. She breaks down in tears just as Clark comes in and tells her it is over. Isis declares that it cannot be over because their love is eternal and that Clark knows nothing about love. She then proceeds to push him onto the sarcophagus and binds him down, getting ready to sacrifice him to Osiris. Cat Grant who watched her from distance is shocked and she accidentally knocks a statue over and breaks it. Isis turns and Cat runs away when she bumps into Green Arrow.

Isis returns to the amulet

She senses Oliver behind her and notes that he doesn’t want to hurt Lois' body and then throws an energy ball at him, which he dodges. Oliver reveals to Clark that the only way to trap Isis is for the sun to hit the amulet again, thus trapping her spirit. Isis again throws an energy ball at Oliver long enough for Clark to break free of his restraints and grab Osiris' heart. Clark threatens to destroy the heart unless Isis releases Lois. Isis, seeing no hope, attempts to stab herself. Oliver fires an arrow at the amulet, sending it towards Clark, who uses his heat vision on the amulet, retrapping Isis in the amulet and freeing Lois.

Appearances[]

In Egyptian Mythology[]

Isis is a goddess from ancient Egypt. As she is depicted in Smallville, she is a goddess (in fact, one of the major members of the pantheon) of magic, wisdom, and medicine. She was also the keeper of a person's secret name (which only she and the person's mother knew). She was the wife of Osiris, in Smallville, with Smallville actually capturing the elements and myths of the goddess very well. However, in the myths, Isis actually was able to reform her husband in the Land of the Dead, with the help of her son Horus (god of the sky, war, and pharaohs) and Anubis (god of funerals, justice, and the afterlife). Also, Horus was able to defeat Set, and became the new pharaoh.

In the Comics[]

In the DC universe there are two characters with the name Isis. One is a DC Comics superhero and the other is an ancient Egyptian goddess.

Goddess

In January 2002DC Comics re-introduced the goddess Isis as one of the chief deities worshipped by the Bana-Mighdallian Amazons in the Wonder Woman comic. Her introduction depicted her in a standard white sleeveless gown and Egyptian head-dress containing her trademark symbol. Later, the various Amazon deities were depicted as selecting more modern appearances for themselves. After this, Isis was then shown as wearing a black business suit with skirt, long straight black hair and a neck choker containing an ankh.

Isis as she appears in the comics

The character, who was originally named Andrea Thomas, was created specifically for the live-action TV program titled The Secrets of Isis. She made her first appearance in the comics in Shazam! #25 and appeared in several late 1970s DC Comics publications, she had also later given her own TV tie-in book that ran for two years. Like other DC characters who have been reimagined, this version of Isis, though not mentioned or appearing in Crisis on Infinite Earths, can be assumed to have been retconned out of existence following the 1985 DC mini series. Isis was re-imagined and introduced into the DC Universe in 2006 as a counterpart for the Shazam!-derived character Black Adam. Isis was reintroduced in the limited series 52

She first appears as Adrianna Tomaz, a beautiful refugee of Kahndaq who was enslaved by Intergang. Representatives of Intergang initially offered her as a bribe to Black Adam, along with $2,000,000 in pure gold, in exchange for allowing the organization to use the country as a base of operations. He killed them all with his bare hands as a sign of his displeasure and allowed Adrianna to go free. Instead, she followed and verbally admonished him for his hard-line policies and oversights. Adam comes to trust her and decides to grant her the same powers he possesses. He brings her to the tomb of his wife and children to retrieve the amulet of Isis. Adam asked Captain Marvel to confer the powers upon Adrianna. By repeating the words "I am Isis", she transformed into her new form.

She and Adam travel across Kahndaq freeing enslaved children as well as searching for her lost brother Amon. They slowly fall in love, and Adam eventually proposes to her with a jewel given to Cleopatra. She happily accepts; they are married in Week Sixteen by the authority of Captain Marvel despite Intergang sending a suicide bomber to the wedding. They eventually find Amon tortured and crippled in an underground basement. Amon is saved although even Isis' powers cannot repair his destroyed nervous system. Her despair is short-lived as Black Adam mercifully imbues Amon with a portion of his own power, allowing him to transform into Osiris. By her brother's insistence Isis convinces her husband to go on a world tour to change their public image. They publicly reveal their human identities while visiting the United States. However, they are attacked by a revamped Suicide Squad. Isis is nearly killed by Persuader until Osiris flies through him by accident.

Isis and Black Adam

Isis is killed by Pestilence when the Four Horsemen of Apokolips ambush her and Black Adam. Embittered by disappointment and anger, Adrianna implores Adam to seek vengeance for herself and her dead brother. After finding the body Black Adam manages to temporarily resurrect Adrianna using a Lazarus Pit. Now crueler and convinced that the Earth is contaminated with evil, she and Adam journey to the Rock of Eternity. There they depose of Captain Marvel, who had taken Shazam's place as the Keeper of the Rock. She recruits Mary Marvel into her plan to wipe evil from the planet and battles the Justice Society when they travel to the Rock, throwing Jay Garrick into the mists surrounding it. The battles rages into Kahndaq, where Isis murders several innocent bystanders who had arrived to witness the return of their leader. Black Adam reluctantly agreed to use his own power to bring Shazam back with the hope that he will be able to cure Isis of her madness. Instead, an enraged Shazam strips their powers and turns them both into statues. Soon after, a mysterious figure appears before the statues claiming them as his "champions". During Brightest Day, a resurrected Osiris carries the statues back to Kahndaq but is unable to reverse their condition. According to the Entity Osiris was brought back to rescue Adrianna. Currently they are located within Deathstroke's stronghold. Osiris decides that he must kill in order that she can live again, but once she comes back to life she chastises him for doing so. Isis is back but the fact that Osiris used death to bring back his sister has caused her to be possessed by an evil. Osiris tries to plead with his sister but to no avail. Osiris leaves her to check on an alert from Kahndaq but when he gets back to Isis she has tunneled away.

He tracks her down in Philadelphia where she has destroyed most of downtown. She begs for her brother to kill her, but when Osiris refuses she flies into the sky ans begs Anubis to do it. Just a lighting bolt is about to kill Isis, Osiris grabs her and the two are hit. When to the two wake up Isis is back to her old self but she senses great darkness in Osiris but she hopes she can fix him.

It was later revealed by the Entity that Isis was brought back to life because she's the one that will aid the Swamp Thing.

Later, Isis aids her brother Osiris in stopping the Quraci soldiers who are attacking Khandaq. Isis learns that Osiris has become more violent, killing the soldiers. When the Justice League attacks Deathstroke's Titans, they were stopped by Isis, who forced them to leave Khandaq at once. She declared her rulership of Khandaq, and withdrew the country from the United Nations, stating that they will outlaw outsiders and recognize no power but their own, and that any intrusion will incite World War III. Isis then tells Osiris that he is not welcome in Khandaq, because of his bloodlust.

Quotes[]

Chloe: In textbook talk, Isis is the goddess of love, and life, and healing. She even marched to the ends of the earth to help jump-start the man she loved. I want Clark to have that kind of loyalty in his life, but I'm just not sure it's from you.
Lana: I would do anything for Clark.
Chloe: Even kill. What a lucky guy. What the textbook left out is that Isis is also the goddess of the underworld. She's responsible for bringing the great god Ra to his knees.
Lana: You believe that I would do that to Clark.
Chloe: Not intentionally, but I realize now that you're capable of it. You should just know that I'm not gonna let that happen.
Season Seven, Wrath

Isis: This vessel may once have been called Lois, but now serves Isis.

Notes[]

Isis

Adrianna is transformed into Isis

  • The costume worn by Erica Durance as Isis in this episode is very similar to how it is depicted in the comics.
  • The museum curator named Adrianna, could in-fact be the Smallville version of Adrianna Tomaz, who is the comic book super heroine version of Isis in the DC Comic Universe. In this respect, Adrianna is the seventieth DC Comics character adapted into the series.
  • In the comics the Amulet of Isis is actually used a tiara, rather than a necklace.
  • When Lois/Isis is performing the ritual she picks up the dagger of Teth-Adam (Black Adam).
