Terry Sloane is the Golden Age Mr.Terrific.This Mr. Terrific is known for believing in fair play, which is why it is on his costume. He also founded the Fair Play Club.

Terry Sloane was a child genius at the age of 10. He graduated from high school at the age of eleven and completed his college studies when he was twelve. He went on to become an award-winning athlete. Finally he became a leader in business and made himself a fortune. But the multi-talented Sloane felt that success had come to him too easily in life, and feeling that he had no challenges left, he sank into depression.

While driving his car and contemplating suicide, he saw a young woman about to jump from a bridge. Sloane rescued her and discovered that her name was Wanda Wilson and she had been driven to despair by the fact that her younger brother, Billy, had gotten involved in criminal activity. Billy was working for a gangster he idolized named Big Shot.

Sloane disguised himself with a mask and costume and, before the eyes of Billy and the other kids in the gang, fought off Big Shot's men and drove them out of town. The boys had a new hero and Billy named the costumed Sloane, "Mister Terrific."

Having found the challenge he sought, Sloane continued to fight crime as Mister Terrific, defender of Fair Play. He became a member of the All-Star Squadron and the Justice Society. Sloane eventually retired and became an English teacher at Gateway University. However, when his old enemy, Roger Romaine - the Spirit King - resurfaced, Sloane resumed his Mister Terrific identity to track him down. However, the Spirit King strangled Sloane, killing him. The JSA have vowed to avenge his death.

The identity of Mr. Terrific would be later taken by Terry's successor, Michael Holt, the third smartest man alive. Michael would be inspired by tales about Terry told to him by the Spectre, Terry's old JSA teammate.

In the New 52, Terry Sloan was a government research scientist before his planet was attacked by Steppenwolf, Sloan found himself on the front lines of the war, using the identity "Mister 08", the Eighth Wonder of the World. However, while researching avenues of counter-attack, he received visions of the future. Acting to prevent these visions during his final mission, he blew up an alien device, destroying four nations.

Going AWOL, nothing is known of his actions from then on, except that he was apparently preparing for the onset of a new age of wonders. When Mister Terrific, a superhero from another world, landed in Manhattan, Sloan was there to kidnap him to prevent his vision from coming through.

During the attack on Washington D.C. by Grundy, he was seen at the central command center of the World Army apparently hired by the World Council as an advisor. Terry Sloan advised that 3 nuclear warheads be dropped on Washington in the hope of destroying Grundy. Despite objections from Commander Kahn the nuclear devices were deployed. Although the nuclear warheads were later thrown into outer space by Green Lantern, the destructive nature of Sloan has put him at odds with Commander Kahn.

Later, he is seen taking the robotic body of the Red Tornado to the Wonders Initiative Facility in Portland to make it work.

Notes[]

  • It is unknown if Terry is still alive. Dr. Fate said that he wasn't "terrific" anymore; so it is possible that he is dead.
