"Dad, you have no idea what I'm capable of."
— Lex to Lionel, Hothead

Alexander "Lex" Luthor (born 1980) is the billionaire CEO of LexCorp and LuthorCorp.

Lex decisively turned to his dark destiny after a series of events over the years: His friendship with Clark Kent went back and forth; he blackmailed Metropolis Inquisitor reporter Roger Nixon into his employ; his relationship with his father Lionel Luthor grew deeply troubled after he became LexCorp's founder and CEO; his relationship then marriage with Helen Bryce failed; he became LuthorCorp's second CEO; his manipulative friendship with Jason Teague developed; he led various experiments with kryptonite; his race for Kansas State Senator against Jonathan Kent turned ugly; his "partnership" with Brainiac evolved; he managed various inhumane projects involving metahumans and meteor freaks; his rivalry with former schoolmate Oliver Queen turned deadly; his relationship then marriage with Lana Lang imploded; his encounters with Lois Lane worsened; he illegally cloned his own brother Julian Luthor; purchased the Daily Planet and named himself CEO; manipulated Kara Kent; murdered his own father with his own bare hands; and finally discovered Clark's secret before using the Orb to collapse the Fortress of Solitude on himself and Clark.

After he had grafted his many clones' best pieces together to create his composite clone LX-Ø to which he was restored into thanks to an alternate-reality Lionel Luthor's deal with Darkseid, Lex met with Clark to look forward to their destiny together as arch-nemeses. He then mortally stabbed his half-sister Tess Mercer, who erased all of his memories using a neurotoxin.

Due to the loss of his memories, Lex distrusts and hates Superman, seeing him as a potential threat to Earth. He has fulfilled his destiny as Superman's greatest enemy.

In 2018, Lex becomes the President-elect of the United States.

Why was Lex Luthor evil? toggle section
Lex Luthor was driven to evil out of resentment and jealousy of Superman's fame and popularity. His experience of a harsh childhood and bad parenting contributed to his inner feelings of inferiority, and he used his wealth and intelligence to manipulate and deceive others in order to take advantage of them. He also blamed Superman for the destruction of his headquarters due to General Zod's actions and correlated him with God. His relationship with his father crumbled, setting him on a path of corruption and abuse of those with meteor powers, just as his father had done. Ultimately, Lex became a man of pure evil, completely devoid of inhibitions, conscience and humanity.

Why did Lex Luthor hate Superman? toggle section
Lex Luthor hated Superman because he believed that humans shouldn't have to rely on an alien to protect them, and that Superman was intellectually inferior to him. He also feared that Superman was a potential threat to Earth, and devoted much of his criminal genius to eliminating him. Luthor also viewed Superman as morally depraved and not harnessing his genius for good, with the added goal of making Superman's powers useless against him. Through their conversations in the underground tunnel, Clark and Lex were forced to confront the breakdown of their relationship, where Lex saw himself as mankind's last best hope and Superman as a threat to that hope. Although Lex claimed to hate "the sin, not the sinner", he saw Superman's "sin" as simply existing. By concentrating his hatred on Superman specifically, Lex avoided going crazy like what happened to him before.

Why did Lex become Superman? toggle section
Lex Luthor was inspired to become the hero of Metropolis after learning of Superman's death. He had been devoted to the idea of ridding the world of Superman, believing he was an alien invader, and became a criminal in trying to exact revenge on him. However, after acquiring Superman's DNA in an attempt to clone him, Lex Luthor realized his inability to defeat Superman and instead chose to become a "super" man himself. Lex Luthor, the former CEO of LexCorp Industries, was a brilliant scientist, billionaire industrialist and Superman's greatest enemy, making him an extremely powerful and dangerous villain. He eventually accepted Superman's secret identity as Clark Kent, and the two became best friends, working together to repel alien invasions.

What is Lex Luthor weakness? toggle section
Lex Luthor is a human with no enhanced strength, speed, durability, or metahuman powers, making him vulnerable to those with superhuman abilities. He also has a tremendous determination and strength of will, often refusing to ever give up. Luthor's greatest weakness is his own selfishness and refusal to accept help from others, considering it "weak" and "pathetic". He loves being admired by others as the leader of men, and is an expert at manipulating people to get what he wants. Despite his genius-level intellect, Luthor uses it only for his own gain rather than for good. Nowadays, he also has to contend with the Lego Superman's formidable powers.

Lex is 6ft in height, and has blue eyes, and has been bald after being caught in the 1989 meteor shower.[1] His choice in clothing is mostly consisted of well-tailored suits with the dark color themes of black, blue, purple, brown, or gray. However, he occasionally wore typical style suits.[2]

Lex in Season Ten.

Over the years, Lex had accumulated various wounds and scars, but had them fixed.[3] When he accepted darkness, he wore dark clothing along with two black gloves and a long black leather trench-coat.[4]

When he was restored into his clone, Lex had a mass amount of stitches and a damaged right hand that he covered with his typical style of clothing and a black glove.[5]

After the collapse of the Fortress of Solitude, Lex was left grievously wounded. His body was scarred and bloodied and his face was always concealed by a breathing apparatus. Tubes were attached at several parts of his body and he appeared to wear a chestplate, likely to accompany his breathing apparatus.

As the President of the United States, Lex wore a complete white suit with a black glove on his right hand.[6]

Lex's appearance remained almost exactly the same throughout the years.

Personality

"This is Smallville! Meteor freaks, alien ships, cryptic symbols! These threats are real. Someone had to take control! Someone has to protect the world."
— Lex to Clark, Descent

Lex had set out to be a great man. A person out to do good unlike his father. Ultimately, he has become a man of pure evil. Completely devoid of inhibitions, conscience and humanity, and has been mentioned to be worse than even Lionel was before he turned good.

Lex's personality traits stem from his mother Lillian Luthor's loving care and his father Lionel Luthor's neglectful, unfulfilling upbringing.[7]

Fracture Alexander

Alexander, the good half of Lex that represents his childhood.

As a child, Lex was very close and protective of his ailing mother yet fearful of his emotionally and physically abusive father. His father would criticize him harshly whenever he showed the slightest weakness.[8] After losing his red hair thanks to the first meteor shower, Lex was teased mercilessly by other children for being bald.[9] Despite his parents' contradicting methods, he was a quiet yet kindhearted little boy.[10] After his mother's death, Lex became a calloused, alienated, and self-destructive young man.[11] In his young adult years, he partied hard, got arrested, and was a general source of embarrassment and disappointment to his father.[12]

But since he moved to Smallville, Lex's personality underwent many changes despite being forced to move there by Lionel. While struggling to overcome Lionel's ruthless and uncaring reputation[13], Lex was honest and kind, willing to use his wealth to help others.[14] He also stopped being self-destructive, and worked hard to become a productive, valuable citizen.[citation needed] While Lex occasionally showed signs of the evil man he would become, his friendship with Clark helped to keep this at bay, but the evil within him was inescapable.

Desperately seeking the love of a family, Lex constantly sought his father's approval and was envious of Clark's relationship with his own father Jonathan Kent.[15] He also thought of Clark as the brother he never got to have.[16][17] Additionally, his romantic relationships are intense, as he married both Helen Bryce and Lana Lang after relatively short courtships. Lex has indicated that he possesses some sort of spiritual beliefs, as he is well-versed in the Bible and has mentioned on more than one occasion that he prays.[18]

With an extensive knowledge of the world and many skills in corporate business, certain sciences, and efficient street skills, Lex is highly intelligent and intellectual, as he quotes a variety of historical figures and often uses scholarly and literary facts to illustrate his point of view. Also, Lex is an accomplished classical piano player,[19] enjoys fast cars,[20] scotch,[21] chess,[22] pool,[23] fencing,[24] swordsman,[25] marksman,[26] and an effective hand-to-hand fighter,[27] owing his skills to years of private tuition.

After Lex became LuthorCorp's second CEO, he began to abandon truth and justice in search of power and control,[28] abusing his company's assets and resources to fund questionable and illegal scientific research on cloning and alien intelligence, and abandoning the company's agricultural roots and converting it into a leading military contractor,[29] had developed prisons or laboratories on which he experimented or controlled metahumans. While Lex has killed people in the past, he became much more willing to kill or torture someone simply for making him angry or if they fail to cooperate.[30]

While his thirst for power had become stronger and his relationship with Lana intensified, he seemed to focus more on obtaining power than Lana's difficult pregnancy (which he had faked to get Lana to marry him).[31] Because of his thirst for power, Lex purchased the Daily Planet (Metropolis' main newspaper) and named himself CEO where he used his authority to kill stories,[32] monitor employees' computer usage,[33] and fire reporters.[34]

Clark has accused Lex of being a coward, And this has been proven on several occasions.

However, Lex did indeed want companionship and family in some form. But as his deeds made such things impossible for him now as closest to him now greatly hated him, He had his late Brother Julian Cloned.

Lex's friendships and relationships were dominated by his desire for control. He attempted to control people by offering them help, but only on his own terms. This included finding out the "truth" about people he suspects of having secrets, often investigating them without their knowledge.[35] He couldn't abide it when people hid the truth from him, as it prevented him from achieving the control that he so greatly desired. As long as he could control someone through gifts and obligation, he would do anything in his power to protect them.[36] As soon as he could no longer control someone, they quickly become his enemy.[37][38]

Lex's desire to protect people went beyond individuals.[39] Lex viewed himself as a great man who is on a search for truth, and who wants nothing more than to help people and humanity. He was blind to the idea that his help is purely conditional: if the person he's helping doesn't completely depend on him or reveal the entire truth about their background to him, he will turn on them completely and make them his enemy. He often blamed others for not coming to him right away with the truth, or for not asking for his protection.

Lex had a narcissistic belief in his own importance and saw himself as a victim: in his mind, his relationships would have been successful if only other people trusted him or came to him for protection. He was oblivious to his own role in this dynamic, and how his desire for control consistently turned friends and lovers into enemies. The people who grew to despise him the most were Clark, Lana, Lois, and Chloe. As Lionel attempted to mend his ways, even he became increasingly disturbed by Lex's growing ruthlessness and even resented himself for having put him on that path. When Lionel discovered that Lex had his late brother Julian cloned, Lionel confronted Lex in disgust for such a twisted perversion.

As the mutual animosity between Clark and Lex grew, Lex's hatred toward Clark even became encoded in his DNA; some of his clones displayed this trait.

Perhaps Lex's most dominant trait and the one he shares in equal measure with his comics counterpart is his incredible degree of self-obsession. Lex is apparently incapable of seeing people outside of how they relate to him and believes that many, if not all, of their actions are designed specifically to hurt him. Whilst this initially seemed to simply be a result of his upbringing and playboy lifestyle, it increasingly became his main trait to the point that he saw everyone around him as extensions of himself, viewed his role as a leader only in terms of how it could benefit him and more or less believed that the world existed to serve his purposes. Conversely, Lex also has a serious inability to admit his mistakes and believe his actions are justified no matter how inhuman they are, to the point where he is almost incapable of accepting responsibility for his actions, often quick to blame his father or Clark for his own failings and accusing them of sabotaging him. This reaches its peak when he starts blaming others for his increasingly evil actions. Despite having accepted his destiny of becoming the tyrannical and ruthless leader his father originally raised him to be, Lex occasionally acknowledges the effects his thirst for power has on his ones he care about.[40]

After having a second chance at life thanks to Earth-2 Lionel's deal with Darkseid, Lex had become a psychopath However, he genuinely loved his half-sister Tess.[41]

Despite having lost all of his memories thanks to Tess, Lex retained his intelligence, is seemingly still power-hungry, and does not trust Superman, seeing him as a potential threat.[42]

Powers and Abilities

  • Healing Factor: Although not exactly at superhuman level, Lex was shown to heal somewhat faster and more efficiently than the average human, enough to allow him to survive serious wounds (as he has been stabbed and shot on numerous occasions), and also to be knocked out dozens of times without experiencing any permanent brain damage.[43] He was also able to survive a poisoning which would kill most people, and the doctors who treated him were shocked he survived it, although he had to have his blood purified every 72 hours until the exposure to the Crystal of Fire cured him completely. However, Lex is still as susceptible to injury as normal human beings are; although he managed to survive the collapse of the Fortress of Solitude, he had to be constently hooked up to life support; even months later he was still at rather critical condition, indicating that his healing factor, while far better than average, isn't superhuman.
    • Elevated Immune System: After getting caught in the 1989 meteor shower and getting exposed to green kryptonite at age 9, Lex was given a superhuman immune system; as such, it cured his asthma and he has not been sick ever since that day, as the kryptonite increased his white blood cell count, making him immune to common colds, fevers, viruses, and other ailments (although advanced diseases such as cancer can still kill him). The kryptonite is also the reason he is bald.[44]
  • Skilled Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Lex is an expert in judo, taekwondo, boxing, swordplay, and gun handling. He was able to hold his own in hand-to-hand combat against Oliver Queen. Though he still seems to have a bit of a glass jaw since he went down after a good punch to the face from a de-powered Clark and one good smack from Lois.[45]

  • Genius-level Intelligence: Lex's greatest asset is his high level of intellect. He is a skilled strategist with a keen business sense, and his access to vast resources, advanced technology, and manpower allow him to directly and indirectly hold his own against more powerful enemies, whether they be superhuman or not. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of subjects in history and culture. He is also a brilliant scientist, often assisting in the creation of LexCorp projects, especially when they are intended to be used against Earth's heroes. Thanks to Tess using Summerholt's neurotoxin on Lex in order to erase his memories, not only is his mind healthy but that it has been operating at a higher percentage, basically making him a super-genius.
    • Multilingual: Lex has been shown reading, understanding or speaking the following languages to various degrees: Latin, Greek, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese.
    • Polymath: Lex is skilled in the fields of history, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, linguistics, computers, engineering and electronics.
    • Business Management: Having learned from his father, Lex is one of the most shrewd yet skilled businessmen in the world. Lex is not above using cutthroat tactics, unethical practices and illegal operations to maintain the success of his business empire.
    • Manipulation: Lex is an expert at manipulating people to get what he wants. He knows how to get into people’s minds and exposing their weaknesses and using their own secrets against them. He is also an expert with using blackmail.
    • Tactician: Due to years of tests and trials from his father and having read many literary works on tactics and strategy, Lex is a very skilled tactician. Lex has been able to stay ahead of and out think Clark, Oliver, Chloe, Lana, and even his own father.

Early life

Veritas132

Lex playing with Jason, Oliver and Patricia.

Lex was born the first child of Lionel and Lillian. He attended boarding school from an early age, and also frequently played with Jason Teague, Oliver Queen, and Patricia Swann, the children of his parents' powerful friends, the Teagues, the Queens, and the Swanns, respectively.

While growing up, for Lex, The Luthor Mansion was the opposite to what Clark had at the Kent Farm. It was a cold and loveless place full of secrets. Even before Julian’s death, Lionel was cold and distant as a father, and would manipulate, intimidate and even physically hurt Lex and Lillian. Everything was always a test for Lex, there was always a lesson or moral to challenge him. Although Lillian loved her son, she was basically a prisoner in the mansion and seemingly suffered from mental illness and was also not able to show much warmth or comfort to Lex.

When police arrived, Lex was wrongly thought to be the perpetrator of the attack due to his hair condition, thus forcing him to spend 24 hours in jail. Lex notes that Tess couldn't figure the typing out, and when Tess asks why he's in a good mood, he points out what's on the news: Superman has been shot, and Batman is on the run. Tess points out her death by his hands, a memory he does not have anymore, but Lex isn't angry over she did, as Luthors are "survivors" and she did what he would've done if the roles were reversed. Lex will now be strapped to his bed, preventing her from doing what she did again. He also notes that Tess might have a connection to Superman, as she hopes he's okay as she watches the monitor where his signal is (from the radiation Lex gave him).At Lexcorp, Lex Luthor wants Tess who is still inside him to tell him everything and if she chooses not to tell him he'll take what he wants to know by force.

Lex wants to know everything.

Lex attempts to tap into the memories of his sister Tess' consciousness trapped in his own mind to determine what she knows about Superman. Using a procedure developed by the former LuthorCorp, Lex appears in the memory of the moment Tess was left in the care of Granny Goodness by their father. The grown Tess materializes to help young Lutessa run from their brother down a long hallway. They manage to barricade themselves behind a door. As Lex approaches, he is called to a red door to exit the procedure. Otis informs Lex of an attack on the city that would interest him. Outside, Dr. Simon Jones, a genius with psychokinetic and telepathic abilities calling himself Psimon, attacks the citizens of Metropolis using his powers to levitate and surround himself with a number of metallic orbs. Superman intervenes as Psimon mentally picks up a semi tractor-trailer and attempts to drop it on a small child. As he tries to talk Psimon out of the attack, Lex arrives to offer his own solution. Angered that it was LuthorCorp's experiments that altered him, Psimon turns his attack on Lex. Superman quickly rescues Lex and speeds him away from the scene.

Superman returns to Metropolis after hiding Lex away in Mexico.Later when Lex finds his way back, he returns to LexCorp, where Lois talks with Otis while waiting to speak with Lex, attempting to get him to admit to his boss' secretly nefarious nature. Lex intervenes, inviting Lois into his office. She confronts him about Psimon and what he intends to do about this and other consequences of the LuthorCorp experiments that granted people such abilities. With Tess chiding him, Lex offers Lois the company line on their corporate responsibility of past transgressions.

Tess uses Lex to write a note to Lois.

Lois reminds him of her first-hand knowledge of Project Ares and how the fall-out of that program brought down Reeves Dam. As Lex shows surprise regarding the dam and the two talk about regret for his actions prior to losing his memories, Tess forces Lex's body to write a note on a Post-It against his awareness, which Lois picks up. On her way out of the office, Lois reads the note and is baffled by its one word: "Help!"

Lex visits Psimon in Hyper-Solitary on Stryker's Island. LexCorp technicians have attached a helmet to him that emits a psionic dampening field to keep him in check. Lex has them lower the field slightly so that he can have Psimon search his mind to pull out any thoughts or memories that might still exist before they were wiped. Psimon is able to see Tess' consciousness and she motions for him to keep quiet. Instead of offering anything useful, the criminal chides Lex for being "an animal" and "a monster." Lex retreats.

Lex threatens Tess.

In LexCorp Tower, using the Project Intercept apparatus to go inside his mind, Lex confronts Tess and reveals that his team of neurosurgeons has discovered the area of his brain where her consciousness resides. He makes her an offer: tell him everything she knows about Superman or he will have the doctors damage that part of his brain, effectively killing her off. Tess rejects his ultimatum. Lex awakes and tells the doctors to prepare to perform their procedure the next morning.

Lex meets with Otis to discuss the incident that occurred at the Ridge Facility. Otis informs him of only one fatality and that, so far, no press has heard of what happened. As they pass by one of the janitorial staff on their way out of the building, the janitor steals Otis' security keycards. On Level 3, the janitor is revealed to be Lois as she uses a keycard to access the floor.

Later Lex angrily surveys the room at LexCorp where the Project Intercept machine once stood. He asks after the security tapes and the night guards, and Otis tells him the tapes were stolen and all of the guards quit. Lex turns to the vision of Tess and she denies having anything to do with it. He realizes that it must have been Oliver Queen. Otis remarks that it would likely be best to postpone the procedure to cause his boss brain damage to kill Tess' conscience. Frustrated, Lex leaves.

Lex will get that spaceship one way or the other.

Later Lex visits a secret lab of LexCorp, called Network, where its scientists report to him the analysis of meteorites they have found along with the ship that Otis informed him about previously. The results are puzzling: the meteorites are somehow from the Earth itself, and seem as if our planet had exploded, which makes everyone confused. In addition, their atomic charges are exactly opposite of what they should be. They also inform him that the ship fell at Smallville and that is now owned by S.T.A.R. Otis says his final words.

As it turns out Otis isn't quite dead, as Lex tends to his friend's wounds, blinded and fading fast, the well meaning sidekick tells Lex he doesn't have to be a bad man.

Three weeks later LexCorp holds a major press conference and Lex introduces the public to a new monument built on the former Watchtower site. In a massive turnout Lex publicly admits that if it weren't for the heroes of earth the universe would be lost. Then Superman makes a speech that is broadcast all over the world. As the tarp falls away it reveals a stunning bronze statue of the Justice League.

Lex is looking outside the Limo with his new assistant attempting to gain his attention. Kitty tells Lex he has a conference call with research and development regarding the new ultra-thin smart phone testing, a meeting with Michael Holt and Ted Kord regarding settlement and damages, an exclusive interview with Jack Ryder, approvals on the cloud-seeding project in Bolivia, real estate inquiries regarding "Nanda Parbat" and he is finally at his 10:00 appointment with the President at the White House. Kitty inquires if everything is alright, which Lex replies on paper yes and she is practically perfect in every way. She thanks him for the opportunity to become his assistant and she would learn a lot from him. However when she calls him Lex, He coldly and swiftly tells her to refer to him as Mr. Luthor only and that she slumps her shoulders asking if that should better, Lex replies no and he isn't sure if it ever will be.

Lex has his eyes on the White House.

The president was tending his garden, he calls Lex the "people's hero". The president says although Lex doesn't wear a costume, his actions allowed the other heroes enough time to turn the tide so the entire world owes him a debt of gratitude. Lex replies it's all in a day's work which the President note is a humble thing to say but doubts Lex has ever been a humble man. Then the president says he would want to keep Lex around to liaise with the Justice League in case they face another crisis and asks him if he considered a career in politics at some point, which Lex with a smile on his face, replying he always felt that he was meant for greatness.

In The Comics

Luthor

Lex Luthor as he currently appears in publication.

Lex Luthor has been Superman's archenemy for most of the superhero's existence, having been envisioned as his dual opposite; morally depraved and relying on intellect over strength. Due to several shifts of continuity, Luthor's history has varied over the years. He was first introduced as a mad scientist and career criminal who knew Superman as a child (then known as Superboy) and blamed him for the loss of his hair following a failed experiement.

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, however, Luthor was reimagined as a wealthy scientist and CEO of one of the most powerful high-tech conglomerates in the world, LexCorp. After many defeats at the hands of Superman, Luthor turned his sights on more power, starting a campaign to become president of the United States of America; Luthor managed to secure his presidency and became more dangerous than ever.

Because of major changes in the history of the DC Universe Lex's backstory was changed like many others in the DC universe. Many new changes mirror the Smallville television series. Lex's family background has a long history with the city of Metropolis. Some of Lex's ancestors were among the pilgrims who founded the city, others were amongst the Native Americans who were to meet them. Over the centuries, the Luthor family became wealthy and influential, Lex's great-grandfather Wallace Luthor being a millionaire industrialist at the beginning of the 20th Century. He lost his fortune though, in the stock market crash of 1929, and went to his grave a pauper after having to declare bankruptcy.

Lex declares war against Superman.

The family fortune would not be rebuilt until the arrival of Lex Luthor, the son of Lionel Luthor (an abusive alcoholic) and Letitia Luthor. Lex cared little for his parents, though he did love his sister, Lena. In his teens, he lived for a time in Smallville with his aunt, also called Lena, and there he met the young Clark Kent and his friends Lana Lang and Pete Ross. The stand-offish and superior Lex was friendly with Clark for a time, but eventually left Smallville under a cloud of suspicion after his father died in mysterious circumstances (engineered by Lex, though this could not be proved). Leaving his sister behind in Smallville, Lex left for Metropolis and founded LexCorp.

Lex turned the company into a multi-national corporation that would ultimately come to dominate the city of Metropolis and own every media in the city and use it to enforce his public image as a wealthy benefactor. The one paper outlet that had always stood free was the Daily Planet (he would come to buy it much later). One such critic was the young reporter and Editor In Chief Perry White, whom Luthor detested, due to his outspoken attitudes, even when the Planet condemned his actions with an outrageous editorial signed by White himself. As a result, when Clark Kent is first inducted into the Planet, the newspaper is almost bankrupt, dilapidated and unable to afford new reporters. Luthor made many criminal connections and industries, anything to help him rise to be the unchallenged master of Metropolis. His legitimate businesses attached to LexCorp stretched from anything from telephone companies to personal gaming devices. As part of his image, Lex created the illusion of being a caring philanthropist. He became the most powerful man in Metropolis, both financially and in the world of organized crime. Lex would create havoc on the streets by selling weapons to the gangs of Metropolis and using his female staff of underlings to keep blackmail files on all of the organized crime groups in the city, so that Lex could use them to further any schemes he had planned. However, this all ended with the arrival of Superman.

Lex luthor superman (2)

Lex vs. Superman

During the several months after Superman first arrived in Metropolis, as part of his philanthropic image, Luthor, by this time the most powerful man in Metropolis, had taken to picking a random person from the supplicants who gathered at LexCorp's gates every morning in order to bestow the chance of a new life upon them.

His choice on this occasion, though, was Rudy Jones who, after eating a donut contaminated by an unknown chemical compound, was transformed into the Parasite. Superman stopped the Parasite's rampage, overshadowing Luthor and infuriating him. Lex contacted General Sam Lane, who was convinced Superman was a threat, and informed him that Superman was an alien. He transformed one of Lane's men, Sgt. John Corben, into Metallo and sent him out after Superman, but Metallo was defeated and Superman, previously an object of suspicion in the city, feted as a hero. When Luthor came to bestow his gifts on a grateful populace the next day, no-one was there; Lex was no longer the most powerful man in Metropolis. This cemented Lex's lifelong hatred of the Man of Steel. Eventually, Luthor went from hero of the people to public enemy number one. Not much else is known on Lex's new backstory as it has only been elaborated. Lex also seems to have a hatred for Clark as well as Superman shown when he assaulted a powerless Clark. This Lex is described as both a "shrewd businessman" and scientist, as well as a criminal mastermind.

Distinguishing Luthor from the majority of Superman's rogues gallery is his normality; Luthor is an innovator and possesses no special abilities besides that of his own cunning; however, he did have a talent for manipulating other super villains so that they would work with his plans, Luthor owned a crystal, which could help him bend people's will, to more easily control them. He is bent on destroying Superman, whom he perceives as an alien threat.

Though the show has not shown his full potential, Lex's scientific knowledge is at genius-level. Rather than harnessing his genius for good, Luthor seizes power for his own benefit and is a threat at large. He claims that as soon as he kills Superman, he will move onto "solving all of the world's problems", but during the recent One Year Later storyline, where Clark lost his powers for a year, all that Lex accomplished was the creation of temporary superhumans and digging up a Kryptonian warship that he attempted to use to destroy Metropolis.

Superboy attacks Lex after he poisons his own sister Lena Luthor.

Lex has also developed another surprising connection to Superman, in the form of Superboy.

When Superman was supposedly killed during his battle with Doomsday, Project Cadmus worked to create a Superman clone. However due to Kryptonian DNA being difficult to clone, they merged Superman's DNA with a human's. Originally it was believed to be the DNA of Cadmus' Director Westfield. In truth however, Lex, who was working with Cadmus, had his DNA used instead. Lex has in the past demonstrated a fatherlike behavior towards Superboy, but following Superboy's death and resurrection, Lex has severed any emotional ties, calling Superboy "a failed experiment".

Lex learns Superman is Clark Kent.

Following the events of the War of the Supermen, Lex Luthor has been pardoned by the current President of the United States, and had regained complete control of LexCorp. He, however, has become obsessed with the Lantern Rings, ever since becoming the Orange Lantern during the Blackest Night. He and a robotic Lois Lane now search the world for the rings, particularly the Black Lantern Ring.

Lex Luthor as he appears in the comics after the relaunch.

Lex managed to locate the Black Lantern power, and along with a Phantom Zone child, became a deity-like entity. He immediately turned his attention to destroying Superman, stating that in doing so would he save humanity. Lex attempted to first demoralize and break Superman emotionally, stating that he was incapable of human emotion. However, Superman proved him wrong by revealing his most painful memory; the death of Jonathan Kent, which resulted in Lex finally discovering Superman's true identity. Lex was then given the option of giving the universe happiness and peace with his new power or to destroy Superman. Lex's ego opted him to destroy Superman, which ironically made him incapable of doing so as the Phantom Zone Child fought against his evil and resulted in Lex losing both his powers and memories. He then vanished abruptly through a mysterious Phantom Zone portal, seemingly forever. His current whereabouts are unknown.

After Flashpoint Lex Luthor is hired by the government to take down Superman. LexCorp also exists. He is hired by General Sam Lane to capture Superman in his early years. He sets up a trap for Superman with a train. Superman barely stops it and is left unconscious. Lex collects him and puts him through a lot of tests and experiments though Superman later manages to escape.

  • Lex only ever directly killed 10 people; Roger Nixon, Morgan Edge, Graham Garrett, Orlando Block, Bronson, Dr. Langston, Adrian Cross, Lionel Luthor, Edward Teague's assassin and Tess Mercer.
  • Like his comic counterpart, Lex Luthor has been married many times. The Smallville version married three women, one of them being Lana Lang. The comics noted that Lex has married more than three women some of them being Contessa Erica Alexandra Del Portenza, Alexandra Luthor from Earth One novel, Ardora, an alien from the planet Lexor, Elizabeth Perske, Gertrude Vanderworth from the film Superman Returns. Lois Lane, renamed to Lois Luthor, has also appeared many times as the wife of Lex Luthor but mostly on alternate timelines.
  • In the comics Lex has also appeared as a father. Some of the characters that appeared to be his children are Jerry White, his son with Perry White's wife Alice White (née Spencer), Lex Luthor Jr, his son with Ardora, Lena Luthor II, his daughter with his last wife Contessa Erica Alexandra Del Portenza, Lex Luthor Jr./Mr Smith, his disfigured son in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and Lucinda Luthor (née Walters), his daughter in Batman Beyond Unlimited comic series. Lex's alternate self from Earth-Three had a son Alexander Jr, who was sent in Earth-One before his world's destruction. Moreover Conner Kent/Kon-El also known as Superboy, the clone that was created half of his DNA and half of Superman's DNA appeared in the storyline Titans Tomorrow with Lex as his surrogate father. Alexis Luthor, a descendant of Lex that appeared in the animated TV series Legion of Super-Heroes.
  • Lex had 7 main steps in descending to darkness: 1st was his failed childhood life especially by his father Lionel and having no actual friends, 2nd was when he was constantly bullied as a teenager by Oliver and his two friends which meant he had to get stronger so he wouldn't get picked on anymore by anyone, 3rd was his friendship with Clark breaking, 4th was fear of aliens and wanting protection led to his control of 33.1 and destruction of his marriage with Lana, 5th was his failure in achieving the last bit of love by killing his "brother" Grant, 6th was killing his father Lionel, and 7th killing the child within him that represented the last bit of good/light in him led to his embracement in darkness. After embracing the darkness, he became the villain of the story by finding the orb and attempting to destroy Clark and his fortress. 3 years later, he finally fully embraces his destiny along with Clark's, kills his sister Tess, and losing his memories of what made the pain, betrayal and anger as well as his destiny.
  • Lex discovers he has an increased white blood cell count, which he speculates might be why he's never been sick since the day he was caught in the first meteor shower.[60]
  • Through the years and the many different versions of the character Lex has almost always had in his side a female character who would appear as his henchwoman and most of the time his love interest. These characters are Miss Eve Teschmacher from the live action films Superman as well as Superman II and later in the comics, Katherine "Kitty" Kowalski from the film Superman Returns, Darla from the live action TV series Superboy, Jessica Morganberry from the 1988 Superman animated series, Mercedes "Mercy" Graves from the animated TV series and later in the comics with Hope Taya from the graphic novel Luthor, Mona also from the Luthor novel, his niece Nasthalthia "Nasty" Luthor from the Pre-crisis comics and the All-Star Superman novel, Wanda Nordo and Lois Lane Robot also from the comics. In the new 52, the characters who appear to have that role next to Lex are both robots, Alphina, an octoppus like robot-woman and Aria. The Smallville equivalent of these characters is Tess Mercer.
  • Lex Luthor also had some male assistants most notably Otis from Superman films, his nephew Lenny Luthor from the film Superman IV, Sydney Happersen and many others.
  • Lex's gun of choice is the nickel plated 9MM baretta.[61]
  • Lex has discovered Clark's secret eight times.[62]
  • Lex has met every main character except Major Zod.
  • Lex has successfully broken up Clark and Lana three times.[63]
  • In the recurring theme of a Luthor killing another Luthor, Lex has murdered the most members of his family.[64]
  • Lex was an anti-hero during Season One, Season Two, Season Three and Season Four, a supporting antagonist in Season Five, the main antagonist in Season Six and Season Seven, and a minor antagonist in Season Eight and Season Ten.
  • Lex Luthor is the third main character (after Clark Kent and Chloe Sullivan) to appear in all ten seasons.[65]
  • Although X's identity was never revealed on the show, writer and producer Al Septien revealed that X was Lex in a twitter post: "As Lex ("X") recovered, his people stole it from Tess and he sent it to Clark hoping it would finish him by sending him to PZ." [66] However, it's unclear how Lex's team was able to reprogram the Crystal of Knowledge, a highly advanced piece of Kryptonian technology, to send someone into the Phantom Zone.
  • Writers Bryan Q. Miller and Al Septien confirmed that the Lex in Finale, Part 2 and season 11 is composed of the original that was crushed in Arctic and later blown up in Requiem, as well as his failed clones' best pieces.[67][68][69]

However, the explanation was given — Lex didn't feel Lana would marry him for himself, so he faked the pregnancy to seal the deal, then stopped drugging her with hormones after the wedding, so she thought she had a miscarriage. Remember, gang, this is one of the reasons he becomes evil, because he is desperate for love that he cannot get from his father or from Lana." [1]

In Commencement, he tells Lana (after she killed Genevieve Teague), "Now, I'll do anything I can to protect you including supporting whatever story of self-defense you want to run with."
  37. Examples include Clark Kent, Lana Lang, Chloe Sullivan, and Grant Gabriel. He promised to do anything to protect Grant from Lionel, including transfer him to an overseas posting at another newspaper. When Grant refused his help, Lex had him murdered.
  38. In Season Seven, Lex recreated this dynamic of publicly offering someone help while secretly investigating them with Kara Kent as after she saved him from drowning in Bizarro, he told her, "Your secret's safe with me. I've already protected you, like I would have protected others close to me if they would have told me the truth. This time, I'm hoping to change all that. I just need you to be honest with me."
  39. In Season One, he risked all of his money to save the employees of LexCorp from losing their jobs; he was able to do so, but Lionel blackmailed his board members and he lost his company and wealth. In Season Six, he built an army of super-powered soldiers to protect Earth against aliens and meteor freaks. Or as he put it, "What you're being asked to do is help protect the world; unstable criminals with dangerous powers are becoming more and more common. Humanity's only chance of surviving the onslaught is this project."
  40. Lex somewhat realized the effect of Lana's "baby" in Promise, wonders why Kara saved him in Bizarro, acknowledges he was abusive towards Lana in Kara, says he loves Clark like a brother after destroying the Fortress of Solitude in Arctic, and stabbed Tess because he didn't want her to go through what he did in Finale, Part 2.

  62. Lex discovered Clark's secret in Hug but forgot after being influenced by Bob Rickman, Clark dreamed that Lex found out with disastrous results in Slumber, Lex found out again while being saved by Clark from Morgan Edge's car in Shattered but forgot completely due to Lionel's electroshock therapy in Asylum, Lex's evil half discovered Clark's secret in Onyx but was merged together with black kryptonite to the original Lex which had no idea of what his other half did, Lex himself discovered Clark's secret in Reckoning after Lana's death but this was undone when Clark travelled back in time to prevent Lana's death and in Vessel just prior to completely becoming Zod's vessel but completely forgot after Zod's wraith was removed by Clark in Zod. The eighth (and final) time was thanks to Brainiac to which Lex used the knowledge to use the orb to destroy the Fortress of Solitude on him and Clark in Arctic but completely forgot Clark's secret (along with his entire life) thanks to Tess in Finale, Part 2.
