Location[]

The home of the Green Lantern Corps is the planet Oa. The planet was severely damaged during the Parallax War.

Early History[]

The Green Lantern Corps was created by the Guardians as a response to combat the threat of the re-purposed Manhunters. However, Earth's first Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, was possessed by Parallax (a being drawn out of the darkness, due to the rings of the Yellow Lantern Corps) and turned against the Corps. As a result, the ensuing Parallax War nearly decimated the Corps leading the thousands of Lanterns who protected the universe, to barely a dozen of Lanterns.

Because of the formation of the new kryptonian colony, a Green Lantern ring of the space sector 2813, where Argo belongs to, travels through space looking for a new recruit worthy to be the bearer of its power to protect this new planet. Unfortunately, none of the inhabitants of Argo serve as suitable hosts, because they are artificial lifeforms, being clones of the original Kryptonians, so the ring has to find someone else.

As John proceeds to walk away, his fellow Lantern teammate Salaak proceeds to contact him to let him that there is a new recruit in need of orientation and adjusting on Earth. John questions the decision of having another human as a member of the Corps which Salaak mysteriously says "who said he was human?"

As Clark attempts to remove the ring, various constructs in the form of a jackhammer, a crowbar and a plunger appears which a confused Lois refers to as ghost props. A relieved Clark finally is able to remove it and throw it into the atmosphere where Emil begins to track it. As he does the ring makes a U-Turn back to Earth to Clark's finger which Clark flies to catch. Oliver sees the bright green glow and tells Chloe he's going out for a jog. Clark then hears a loud siren coming from Metropolis National Bank where he goes to intervene, telling Lois to inform Emil that they should worry about his wardrobe change later.

As the criminals duck in shock, they proceed to fire their missiles. Clark and the police look on in shock as Superman attempts to get all the missiles, when all of a sudden the ring creates a giant Superman construct thus destroying the remain weaponry, causing the terrified bank crooks to flee surrendering to the police. At Watchtower, Clark is discussing his new powers and the history of the Green Lantern Corp with a projection of Tomar-Re while Lois, Tess, and John Stewart watch. Tomar reveals he died in attempt to defend Krypton from destruction and now his ring, sector and duty is handed down to Clark which is mainly due to the return of the Kryptonian species the Argo colony. He also reveals that the now severely damaged planet Oa, is the base of the Green Lantern Corps, which is an elite force, patrolling and protecting the cosmos, created by the now-deceased Guardians. Clark tries to explain to Tomar that Earth is the home he has sworn to protect but Tomar tells him that his assigned sector is 2813. Clark then tells him that he knows for a fact that he doesn't suppose to interact with the citizens of New Krypton. He asks why not choose someone worthy from the Kandorian army?

John tells Clark that he is a soldier now and has the duty to protect his sector.

John tells Clark that this isn't how it works, the rings are powered by the willpower of their wearers which is why they choose people like himself, Kyle Rayner and Hal Jordan as Corps members. Lois and Tess disbelieve that John Stewart has a stronger will than them or any of the 6 billion people on Earth, with Tess even wondering how did someone like Alan Scott get a hold of one of their rings, with John admitting he doesn't know what loophole Alan used to get a ring of his own. Clark then questions what gives a Guardian or whoever is left the right to force other sentient beings into service. John retorts that orders are orders and Superman is a soldier now.

Clark and John encounter the Manhunters.

At S.T.A.R. Labs, Stewart says he doesn't know a lot about his ring even though he wears it for a decade. Dr. Hamilton explains that the ring enables the user to tap into power from beneath the fabric of reality and that the mind tells the ring how to filter and implement this power. Furthermore, the energy is traceable and acts as a locator. Suddenly, an employee of the lab says to Emil that a signal was detected similar to the one of the ring outside of the facility. John says he hasn't invite anyone from the Corps there, so he and Clark change back to their Lantern costumes and go to check what is going on. Much to their surprise they find an army of Manhunters waiting outside.

Superman and John Stewart try to contain the Manhunters' attack without putting in danger any civilian in Metropolis. Since they can not beat them, as their rings can't make a dent in them, Clark quickly decides to take the fight to a non populated area to avoid causing any casualties, so they fly to the Moon, where Justice League's new Watchtower base is still being built by S.T.A.R. Labs' drones. While fighting with them the two heroes hear the Manhunters saying that the Green Lanterns have violated a treaty, but Stewart says he has no idea what they're talking about. To aid Superman and Green Lantern in their battle, Tess takes under her control the drones and commands them to attack the Manhunters. During the battle, John realizes that the Manhunters are powered by yellow rings and that is why their rings can not work on them so he tells to Clark to fall back. Superman tells to Tess to stand down and then ends the battle with a powerful blast of heat vision destroying the remaining Manhunters. Clark asks John if this is the last of them and he says there's always more.

Smallville - Lantern 006-006

The Lanterns return to their sectors.

On the Moon, a group of Green Lanterns explain to Clark and John and that there is no treaty between the Guardians and the Manhunters, and one of them suggests that these Manhunters were rogue units that have gone mad without a purpose. Superman asks who created the yellow rings that powered the robots and the Lanterns explain that in order to battle the Manhunters, the Guardians took extreme measures, as the rings powered by the emerald energy of will were not enough, so they created the yellow rings, that are powered by fear. Every time the Manhunters seized a planet and started to exterminate its population, the new Yellow Lantern Corps arrived and powered by the fear of the population, became much stronger. Unfortunately, the yellow light also drew something from the darkness, the ancient fear entity Parallax. After this revelation, the Lanterns decide to return to their sectors and report to their post. Before leaving, Salaak, says something to John, requesting not to reveal it to the other Lanterns.

Traveling to an unknown part of the galaxy, John still cannot believe what Salaak has told him, but suddenly he and Superman come face to face with Parallax. The entity says that he could feel John's fear from miles away. The two Lanterns see that Parallax has imprisoned the presumed dead Guardians and feeds from them. Clark tells Parallax that the terms of the treaty haven't been violated but Parallax says the Lanterns are gathering to destroy it, with Clark being the newest member of the Corps as proof of it. Threatening Clark, Parallax says that the Guardians have lost their luster and the Manhunters have failed so he seeks to feed from the population of Earth. He starts vomiting yellow rings and sends them across the galaxy to find recruits for his own Corps.

JSSM-L1-7

Clark and John fall back.

CKSM-L-7

Clark goes back to Earth to protect it from the Yellow Lanterns while John stays to face Parallax.

Parallax has captured Clark and John and says that his yellow rings have arrived on Earth, by now, and his "harvesters" will provide him with the fear of the humans, so he can feast on it. One of the imprisoned Guardians, Ganthet, communicates telepathically with the two Lanterns and informs them that the other Guardians are keeping Parallax distracted, so he can tell them that in order to defeat Parallax, they should find something the beast fears. He has more to say, but he's unfortunately cut off by Parallax, who promptly tears him in two. Clark says that Ganthet bought them some time, by distracting Parallax, and they need to fall back. They both create a cage around the asteroid Parallax resides, preventing him of leaving it. John then says that Clark must return to Earth to stop these yellow rings, because the more fear they generate the stronger Parallax will become but Clark doesn't want to leave him behind. John says that he doesn't have a choice and that he will buy Clark some time in order for him to get back on Earth, so Clark wishes John good luck and leaves but while he is leaving, Parallax manages to break though the cage he has been held in, ready to face John.

Later, Clark returns to Earth and heads to Arkham Asylum in Gotham City to fight the newly powered Yellow Lanterns.

The Green Lanterns decide if they will interfere.

In space, a small group of Green Lanterns observe the battle on Earth. Aya says that they had agreed to not interfere but Salaak confesses that he feels responsible for what happened, even though he had good intentions. The Green Lanterns are not sure if they can fight Parallax because the last time they did it, most the members of the Corps were killed and Oa was almost destroyed. Salaak then plays John's message about the one thing that frightens Parallax, so they decide to find it and stop the fear entity once and for all.

The two Green Lanterns watch their friend die.

Aya, John Stewart, Saint Walker, Supergirl and Superman continue to battle the Manhunters.

Aya asks John Stewart if this battle echoes the Parallax Wars as they battle powerful Monitor soldiers. John tells Aya this is far, far worse but the distraction is enough that Saint Walker is captured and killed, despite a delayed bombardment of emerald energy on the Monitor army. The two Green Lanterns are heartbroken as the blue ring leaves orbit for a new owner.

Superman spots a pod approaching Earth. The pod overcomes the heroes and speeds beyond them breaking the sound barrier, aiming itself at Watchtower. As it crushes, John and Aya protect everyone with an emerald bubble shield.

Later, John and Aya try to hold back the Omega Monitor and Aya calls John by his real name making him realize that they are at world's end.

Aya and Nightwing tries to fight off the Manhunters. Suddenly a flash of blue energy envelops her and she is given Saint Walker's Blue Lantern ring which she uses to create blue hope constructs that destroys all nearby Manhunters.

Green Lantern Rebirth 6

The Green Lantern Corps as they appear in the comics.

Chastened by the failure of the Manhunters, a legion of robotic sentinels that were created to enforce their will and guard against all menaces, the Guardians, the first intelligent life forms in the universe, decided that their newest force of soldiers for good would consist of living beings, ones who had free will and strong moral character. To arm this new legion of celestial knights, the Guardians created the Power Rings, rings of inconceivably-advanced technology that allowed their wearers to project green beams of energy with which the bearer could conjure objects of any size or shape, limited only by their imagination and willpower. These individuals made up the intergalactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps.

One of the oldest planets in the universe, Oa serves as the home and headquarters for the race of blue-skinned powerful humanoids, the Guardians of the Universe, and the Green Lantern Corps.

GREENLANTERNCORPS

The Corps' full roster.

There is at least one Green Lantern for every sector, most of the times it's his home world, which he has made an oath to protect. The first Green Lantern of Earth was chosen when the appointed Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814, an alien named Abin Sur from the planet Ungara, crash-landed on Earth after being mortally wounded. As Sur died, his power ring sought and found two potential successors: the test pilot, Hal Jordan and the social welfare caseworker, Guy Gardner. Jordan was nearer to the crash, so he was chosen over Gardner. Gardner was relegated to backup status should anything happen to Jordan. Guy is later partnered with Jordan after completing his training under the Green Lantern, Kilowog. When Gardner was seriously injured, an architect and veteran U.S. Marine, named John Stewart, was selected by the Guardians as Jordan's backup.

Green Lantern Vol 5 5 Textless

Hal Jordan and Sinestro working together.

Both the Corps and the Guardians suffered casualties during the Crisis on Infinite Earths. The Guardians' failure to take appropriate action during the Crisis led to their decision to depart Oa in the company of their female counterparts, the Zamarons. Left to their own devices, the Corps underwent a major reorganization. A team of Green Lanterns led by Hal Jordan was stationed on Earth, and the system of assigning one Green Lantern to a sector was temporarily abandoned. The Guardians eventually returned to Oa and began the reconstruction of the Corps, assigning Guy Gardner to Earth, John Stewart to the Mosaic World, and Hal Jordan to recruit new members.

Ganthet Parallax

Fighting Parallax.

The Green Lantern Corps patrolled the DC Universe for over three billion years. In that vast length of time, some Green Lanterns rebelled and turned against the Corps. Two of the most important fallen Lanterns were Sinestro, the rogue Green Lantern who used the power of the Green Lantern to instill fear rather than combat it, and Hal Jordan, who would unknowingly become possessed by Parallax, the ancient fear-parasite trapped in the Battery. At the ruins of his home Coast City, Jordan was consumed by grief, which in turn allowed him to be overcome by fear—all while not knowing that his fear was tainted by the creature Parallax. This was planned by Sinestro while he was imprisoned in the Battery. The Green Lantern Corps ranks were decimated by the Parallax-possessed Jordan. The Corps' power source, the Central Power Battery, was drained by Jordan and destroyed, removing the original power source for the rings. After Hal Jordan, killed various members of the Green Lantern Corps and the Guardians of the Universe, the last surviving Guardian, Ganthet, found the struggling freelance graphic artist, Kyle Rayner, and gave him the last working Power Ring, making him the sole Green Lantern of the Corps. Rayner would eventually become Parallax's nemesis, and during their first battle, Rayner intentionally triggered a chain reaction in Oa's core, causing the planet to explode.

The Lost Lanterns were a group of Green Lanterns that tried to stop Parallax from reaching Oa. Parallax defeated them in space and after Parallax destroyed the Corps, they were assumed to be dead. Instead, they were captured by the Manhunters and taken to Biot, the Manhunter homeworld in Sector 3601. They were used in various experiments to design and power new Manhunter models. They were eventually found and rescued by the resurrected Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner. They rejoined the Corps, albeit with some difficult adjustment. Despite learning of Parallax's possession of Hal Jordan, many still blame him for their captivity and cluster to themselves when summoned to Oa.

When Kyle Rayner accidentally traveled through time to ten years in the past and met a young Hal Jordan, the Guardians were able to send Rayner back to his own time by using the power from the Central Battery after Jordan and Rayner defeated Sinestro together. Jordan decided to gave Rayner a copy of his ring to restart the Green Lantern Corps in a bid to undo some of the damages he knew he was going to make. Rayner then gave the ring to Jennifer-Lynn Hayden, daughter of the elder Green Lantern Alan Scott, whereupon she became the first female Green Lantern of Earth, following in her father's footsteps, after he made another copy with it.

In an attempt to redeem himself after his actions as Parallax, Hal Jordan sacrificed his life reigniting the sun, whereupon Oa and the Central Power Battery were completely rebuilt by the physical manifestation of Jordan’s dying will channeled through his old friend and confidant Thomas Kalmaku. After Hayden regained her Starheart powers and becomes the superheroine Jade once more, Rayner gave the ring to John Stewart. After Oa's return, Kilowog would eventually be resurrected. With everything apparently in place, Ganthet, Kilowog, Stewart, and Rayner made plans to rebuild the Corps once more.

The new Green Lantern Corps presently lacks both the manpower and the political influence it once had due to its years-long absence from many sectors. This has left the Corps currently unable to intervene in situations it might have before Parallax destroyed the old Corps, including conflicts such as the Rann-Thanagar War. The Guardians remain staunchly uninvolved in what they see as a conflict that could destabilize many sectors, but that has not stopped Kyle Rayner and Kilowog from helping refugees.

As of the One Year Later timeframe, the Green Lantern Corps had increased its numbers, with many former trainees now full-fledged officers. A lack of truly experienced lanterns remained an issue, with Guy Gardner being called upon often to assist the rookies.

Green Lantern Corps VS Sinestro Corps.

Rogue Green Lantern Sinestro created his own version of the Corps. Dubbed the "Sinestro Corps", it recruited beings capable of generating great fear. One of the members recruited into the Sinestro Corps was Amon Sur, the son of former Green Lantern Abin Sur, who held a grudge against Hal Jordan for being chosen to bear his father's ring instead of him. Armed with yellow Power Rings and Lanterns, the Sinestro Corps staged an attack on Oa, killing dozens of Green Lantern Corps officers, kidnapping Kyle Rayner, and freeing Parallax from the Corps' supervision. As the Sinestro Corps' campaign of terror spread, the Guardians, in desperation, rewrote the first Law of Ten in the Book of Oa, enabling the remaining Lanterns to use lethal force against members of the Sinestro Corps. This law later expanded to include all adversaries of the Green Lanterns, though the law does not extend to cold-blooded killing of defenseless adversaries. This distinction played a part in the expulsion of the Green Lantern, Laira from the Green Lantern Corps for killing Amon Sur when he was unarmed.

All the different Lantern Corps.

Several other corps were created with their power being derived from the emotional spectrum, which is divided into the seven colors of the rainbow, with each color corresponding to a different emotion: rage (red), greed (orange), fear (yellow), willpower (green), hope (blue), compassion (indigo), and love (violet). However, it also represents the absence of color (black), which is death, and the combination of colors (white) which is life. The two emotions on the far ends of the emotional spectrum (rage and love), have a much stronger influence over their users while willpower, the center of the spectrum, can be used to overcome and maintain control over one's emotions.

The Red Lantern Corps, which were formed by Atrocitus, draw upon rage in order to create constructs made of red light with their power rings. The sole bearer of the orange light is Larfleeze, also known as "Agent Orange", who draws upon greed to create constructs made of orange light with his power ring and he also possesses the ability to steal the identities of people he's killed and transform them into orange light constructs which he uses to comprise his Orange Lantern Corps. The Blue Lantern Corps, were formed by former Guardians Ganthet and Sayd, with the Blue Lanterns draw upon hope in order to generate constructs made of blue light with their power rings, which are created from the target's hopes. Moreover Blue Lanterns can only have the full extent of their abilities unlocked in the presence of a green power ring, which can also supercharge it. The Indigo Tribe, which is lead by Indigo-1, draw upon compassion in order to generate constructs made of indigo light with their power rings. The tribe also possesses the ability to teleport and reproduce the abilities of other Corps. The Star Sapphires were formed by the Zamarons in order to spread love throughout the universe; drawing upon love in order to create constructs made of violet light with their power rings.

Fighting the Black Lanterns.

Hidden in the Book of Oa is the forbidden chapter of Cosmic Revelations, which contains a prophecy called the "Blackest Night". In the prophecy, seven different colored corps are at war with each other, eventually destroying one another and the universe. Following the Sinestro Corps War, Ganthet and Sayd are banished from the Guardians. The remaining Guardians create the Alpha-Lanterns and reveal new laws they've written to the Green Lantern Corps. During the Blackest Night, the Guardians finally realize the accuracy of the prophecy and are imprisoned by Scar, a rogue Guardian who launches an attack on the Corps by reviving deceased members as Black Lanterns, an army of zombies. The Green Lantern corps, along with the other six corps fight the Black Lanterns to regain safety and order in the universe.

War of Light-8

The New Guardians.

The White Lantern Corps, were formed by Hal Jordan, and draw upon the power of life itself to create constructs made of white light with their power rings, which can also resurrect the dead, restoring them to life. The Blackest Night ends when Hal Jordan, merged with the Life Entity, and the recently created White Lantern Corps to defeat Nekron and banish him from the realm of the living.

After the Blackest Night, Hal Jordan forms a loose alliance with Carol Ferris, Atrocitus, Sinestro, Larfleeze, Saint Walker and Indigo-1 to find and protect the emotional entities, who have been kidnapped by a mysterious villain. The kidnapper is revealed to be Krona, who is also revealed to be the one who caused the Manhunters to go on a rampage in the first place. Carol, Sinestro, Atrocitus, Saint Walker, Larfleeze and Indigo-1 are trapped within the Book of the Black. However, Hal escapes and takes their rings. During the final struggle, Hal and Kyle free Carol, Sinestro and the others from the Book of the Black. Also, Sinestro becomes a Green Lantern once again. Hal kills Krona, releasing the entities from the Guardians. However, the Guardians believe Hal to be the most dangerous Green Lantern, so they discharge him from the Corps.

During Brightest Day, the New Guardians were created. The team is made up of a representative of each of the Corps that tap into a particular portion of the emotional spectrum; its members are Hal Jordan (Green Lantern Corps), Carol Ferris (Star Sapphires), Sinestro (Sinestro Corps), Atrocitus (Red Lantern Corps), Larfleeze (Orange Lantern Corps), Saint Walker (Blue Lantern Corps) and Indigo-1 (Indigo Tribe).

The Green Lanterns of Earth.

In the New 52, Sinestro is still an unwilling Green Lantern, Hal remains exiled, although he has been forced to assist Sinestro's activities with a ring created and powered by Sinestro, while Kyle has gone AWOL alongside six members of the other Lantern Corps. John was recently forced to kill a Green Lantern who was about to give in to torture the access codes to the Oan defense network from the Keepers. Guy remains the only main character with a stable position on the Corps.

The New Guardians in the New 52.

The New Guardians now consist of Kyle Rayner (Green Lantern Corps), Arkillo (Sinestro Corps), Bleez (Red Lantern Corps), Glomulus (Orange Lantern Corps), Munk (Indigo Tribe), Saint Walker (Blue Lantern Corps) and Fatality (Star Sapphires).

The Guardians currently consider the Green Lantern Corps a failure and are planning to replace it with the "Third Army", which consists of beings with no free will that are made out of the Guardians' bio-tissue and will be led by the equally unknown "First Lantern", who was guarded by the older Guardians because he was deemed too dangerous. In the midst of the chaos, Sinestro gave Hal Jordan a temporary ring to help him out on missions, but the Guardians attacked them and both rings merged and became faulty and thought Sinestro and Jordan apparently dead so it went in search of a new Lantern, the Lebanese-American, Simon Baz. The Guardians command the Third Army to destroy the Green Lanterns, but B'dg of Sector 1014 says that some Green Lanterns have discovered the Guardians' true intentions. Meanwhile, Green Lantern Sentinel Guy Gardner is assisting a ship as a peace treaty with warring planets, but Xar, Guy's mortal enemy, was freed by the Guardians. Taking half of the Lanterns on the mission away to keep his family safe, they are met by some Third Army recruits, who kill all the additional Lanterns. Guy escapes, but only to be reprimanded and removed from the Corps. Meanwhile, John is on a mission to gather all of the pieces of Mogo, in hopes that the planet-sized Green Lantern will be able to reform. The Guardians' plan was to use the reformed Mogo and assimilate it into the Third Army, but their plan failed when Mogo destroyed the Third Army that was trying to assimilate him. Meanwhile, the Green Lantern Corps discovered that the Guardians had turned against their own Corps; so the Green Lantern Corps join the New Guardians and Atrocitus' Manhunters to rebel against the treacherous Guardians.

Volthoom

All Corps unite to fight Volthoom.

During the fight with the Third Army and the Guardians, Volthoom, the First Lantern, breaks free of containment as the Guardians attempt to draw more energy from him. While Volthoom is in a weakened state, he began to drain off the other Lantern members of their emotions, minds, and memories of the various beings present with the intention of examining their lives in order to get his emotional powers to return. Among those that suffered these invasive processes: Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, John Stewart, Fatality, Carol Ferris, Larfleeze, Saint Walker and Atrocitus. While Volthoom drains off the Green Lantern Corps on the planet Oa, Mogo rescues them by shielding them with dirt and stone allowing them to escape from Volthoom's powers. Mogo recruits the Green Lantern Corps to fight against Volthoom. After the battle is over and Volthoom is killed, Hal returns to life as Green Lantern once more, Sinestro, however, killed the Guardians of the Universe for unleashing Volthoom and their "Third Army" plot and spares Ganthet and Sayd, but exiles them both from Oa.

When the Crime Syndicate's Power Ring (alternate version of Hal Jordan from Earth-3) battles Sinestro, Sinestro cuts off his right arm, releasing him from the ring's control. Power Ring thanks Sinestro for freeing him from his curse. Sinestro welcomes his thanks and incinerates him. The ownerless ring of Volthoom then flies off to find a new host, Jessica Cruz.

Green Lantern Corps in Other Media[]

Notes[]

  • John Stewart mentions to Salaak that in the past there was more than one human Green Lantern patrolling Sector 2814, alluding to the other Green Lantern Corps members from Earth in the comics, such as Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner and Simon Baz. It was later mentioned that Jordan was the first human to become member of the Green Lantern Corps, with Rayner, Stewart and Gardner being chosen after him.
  • Even though Alan Scott was known as a Green Lantern in the past and had his own power ring, it is implied by John Stewart, that somehow he got hold of the ring without actually being chosen by it and for that reason he never affiliated with the Corps. It was also mentioned that the Corps considers Hal Jordan as the first Green Lantern of Earth.
  • Some of the members of the Corps that appear in the projection of Clark's power ring, except from John Stewart and Salaak, are: Isamot Kol, Galius Zed, Brik, Hannu, Arisia, Garl Rathbone, Ch'p, Kilowog, G'Nort, Katma Tui, Penelops, Charqwep.
  • The Green Lanterns who appear along with Salaak and talk with John Stewart and Superman, except from the ones that had already appeared in previous issues, even though they were not named in their first appearance, were Aya and Soranik Natu.
