Kara Zor-El, formerly known as Kara Kent, also known as Supergirl, is the paternal cousin of Clark Kent, the only daughter of Zor-El and a member of the House of El.

Chloe Sullivan created a false backstory for the authorities to cover Kara's sudden appearance in Smallville, explaining that; she was Clark's cousin on his adoptive father's side, raised in Minnesota for the past 19 years until she was able to track down her one remaining blood relative.

Kara became a target for Brainiac; who forced her to follow him into space. Brainiac trapped her on Krypton in 1986 after traveling through time. Kara appeared to return to Earth with Clark but in reality, Brainiac had put Kara in the Phantom Zone and was posing as her on Earth. Chloe eventually rescued both Clark and Kara from the Phantom Zone.

In 2010, Kara returned to Metropolis, publicly revealing her powers and becoming a hero to look after the city as "The Maiden of Might", keeping it safe from the "Darkness" that Jor-El warned Clark about. When the Vigilante Registration Act was put into effect, many heroes were put on a most wanted list, among them was Kara, who seems to have successfully managed to escape from her pursuers.

After Clark was ready to face Darkseid, Jor-El informed Kara that her destiny was elsewhere. Tearfully, Kara bid Clark an unheard goodbye before putting on a Legion ring and transporting to the future, to fulfill her own destiny.

After spending several months in the 31st century as a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, Kara returned to the present, was reunited with Clark for good and became a member of the Justice League.

Physical Appearance

Kara is a fairly tall woman; with blonde hair and blue eyes and has stayed the same age since she was stuck in suspended animation for 18 years and has an attractive, curvaceous appearance of a teenage girl. Due to her beauty and grace, Lex Luthor thought she was an actual angel when she first saved his life. She, like her cousin Clark, wears primary colors of red, blue, as well as yellow in all of her clothing. When she lost her memories, she wore white most of the time until her memories and powers were restored. She also has worn a revealing red bikini.

She always wears her Kryptonian bracelet and also a Kryptonian necklace which both hold the symbol for the House of El.

When she was trapped in the Phantom Zone, she wore black, tattered clothing and her hair were arranged differently (in a series of braids) in order to combat the Zoners.

After she came back, she was spotted wearing a blue, leather jacket with yellow stripes on the wrists, with a yellow shirt underneath, as well as a pair of red jeans. She's sometimes seen wearing a blue tank top midriff shirt over a red bra, silver bracelets, a red skirt and knee length boots.

Supergirl

When Kara returned and revealed at the world her existence as a vigilante, the costume she wore consisted in a light blue, long sleeved shirt that exposes her midriff, with a red skirt, as well as red boots with yellow stripes. When not in action, to disguise as a "civilian", she wears a brunette wig, a suit in neutral colors and a pair of glasses to keep herself undercover from the public.

In Argo when she reappears in the future, Kara wore a double shades of blue long-sleeved coat with the interior bright red as well as the top of the shoulders, the chest, the hem of the sleeves and the bottom.

Under it she wears a tight suit of which are only visible pants, that are of the same two shades of blue between the groin and outer thighs, she completes her look with a pair of knee-length red boots and a yellow stone as a belt.

Also she had the symbol of the House of El printed on her chest.

Personality

Kara was raised on the planet Krypton. As a result; of having spent time; with her actual biological family, Kara was very close to her aunt, Lara and fiercely loyal to her father. But Kara had a bit of a rebellious side to her, as well as admitted to sneaking away from Zor-El's watchful eye to have fun; on one particular occasion, this involved a journey to Earth; with Lara.

Kara is open-minded, assertive, outspoken, stubborn, has a strong sense of responsibility and duty, and is interested in understanding and helping people. She is brave and full of self-confidence; unlike her cousin; who was filled; with doubts and limits. Because of this confidence, she was able to fulfill her true heroic duty and unlock all her powers.

Kara supposedly was sent to Earth to watch over Kal-El, a job; which she takes seriously; which has put her at odds; with her cousin on several occasions; due to the fact that; Clark turned out to be an adult and not the baby that; she was expected to find. She is eager to learn, although often she would rather do things her own way than follow the directions of others; including her cousin, Clark. (Fierce)

Despite Kara being the new arrival to Earth; she often comes off as more mature than Clark on some occasions; particularly after she returned to Earth following her search for the city of Kandor.

Kara has quickly embraced American popular culture, but still sometimes finds human customs strange.^{[citation needed]}

Powers and Abilities

Kryptonian Physiology: As a Kryptonian, Kara has many powers and abilities, like her cousin Clark Kent under a yellow sun. Unlike Clark, she doesn't hold back any of her abilities.
- Solar battery: Kara's cellular structure allows her to absorb, store and metabolize the wavelength of yellow sun radiation to fuel all of her abilities. Her cellular matrix functions like a solar battery.
  - Superhuman Strength: Kara possesses tremendous physical strength, being strong enough to pick up vehicles and trees without any effort. She is strong enough to fight Clark. She later destroyed an impenetrable wall. She held up a billboard with one hand while in flight. By the time Kara meets Clark in the 31st century her strength has increased to the point where she can injure Clark. (Kara, Fierce, Lara, Supergirl)
  - Superhuman Speed: Kara can move and or react at immense supersonic speeds.
  - Superhuman Stamina: Kara can take part in extensive strenuous physical action for long periods of time before tiring.(Kara)
  - Invulnerability: Kara is virtually indestructible, and highly resistant to all forms of physical and mental types of harm, unless kryptonite is involved.
  - Accelerated Healing: In the Phantom Zone, Kara was mortally wounded but as soon as she came back to Earth her wounds were perfectly healed. Bloodline
  - Flight: Kara can easily defy gravity and propel herself through the air at will, achieving flight. She has already mastered this ability, even though she has fewer years of experience than Clark. This is due to her confidence in herself and her clear idea of purpose, she did not have the same mental limitations that Clark had and was able to fully master this power immediately. Kara can fly into space in a matter of seconds and She was able to quickly swoop into the air to grab a falling billboard, from crushing civilians. She can also hover in mid-air.   - Superhuman Hearing: Kara can hear whispers, frequencies, pitches, as well as other sounds that the human ear can't detect. She was able to recognize the sound of her distant ship's beacon. She used this power to spy on Clark and John Jones’ conversation about her. She was also able to hear that Gordon Godfrey was being possessed by Darkseid. (Kara, Cure, Supergirl)
  - Telescopic Vision: Kara can see objects and people from far away: she can even focus on particular earthly objects from space. She used this power while she was searching for Kal-El and later her ship, scanning areas from the air and again while searching for Brainiac. (Kara, Veritas)
  - Multi-spectrum Vision: Kara can see clearly in total darkness. She can fly through the sky safely at night, and patrol the dark streets of Metropolis. She used this ability to search the night sky for Kal-El, her ship, and Brainiac (Kara, Lara, Veritas).
  - X-ray Vision: Kara can see through any matter and material unless it is covered in lead. She first used her x-ray vision to analyze the inside of a mysterious time capsule. (Fierce)
  - Heat Vision: Kara has shown more significant mastery and skill with Heat Vision over some of her other powers. However, at first she couldn't control this ability, sending out large pulses of heat. She later learned how to control it when she used it to save Clark. (Fierce) She later used it to destroy the control panel to Clark's kryptonite cage. (Traveler)
  - Longevity: In an alternate reality Jor-El transported Clark to, Kara hadn't been kept in suspended animation for 18 years and she still looked much younger than a woman in her late 30's. (Apocalypse)
  - Superhuman Dexterity: Kara can preform any action, like catching or throwing, perfectly if she knows how to do it. However, she didn't know how to hold chop-sticks properly and Oliver had to guide and direct her on how to use a bow an arrow. (Cure and Prophecy).
  - Enhanced Lung Capacity: Kara’s lungs like the rest of her body, are superhuman. Kara is capable of holding her breath for long periods of time, both for travel underwater (Bizarro) and in space (Veritas).
    - Superhuman Breath: Using her super powerful lungs she can expel gale force winds, to blow objects or people away. Just by using a very small blow, like blowing out a candle, Kara had enough power to send Chloe flying furiously across a room.^[1] When Clark was trapped in the Kryptonite cage, Kara blew open the door to save Clark (Traveler). She was never shown using the Arctic Breath aspect of this power though.
  - Enhanced Mental Capacity: Kara’s mind and brain are similarly enhanced just like the rest of her body.
    - Accelerated Development: Kara is able to learn new skills faster than a human could. Jimmy noted that she went from having trouble with computers to becoming an excellent hacker in just a few weeks. (Lara) She was able to learn to “surf with the best of them” from Jimmy in a very short time. (Blue)
    - Super Memory: She can remember details of krypton and her past life despite that being decades ago and her being in suspended animation for years. (Kara, Lara). However, similarly to her cousin she is susceptible to losing her memory.

Abilities

Computer Hacking: In addition to her Kryptonian powers, Kara is also a skilled computer hacker. (Lara)
Multilingual: Kara can understand and speak both Kryptonian and English fluently.
Skilled Combatant: Kara is a capable fighter at hand to hand combat.

Vulnerabilities

Red solar radiation: Under the light of a red sun like on her home world Krypton, Kara is rendered powerless and mortal.
- Zoners: While in the Phantom Zone, Kara is mortal and capable of being wounded by the Wraiths.
Kryptonite
- Green Kryptonite: Like all Kryptonians, Kara is weakened and can be killed by exposure to green kryptonite. Carter nearly killed her by injecting liquefied kryptonite directly into her veins (Lara).
Brute Force: While Kara is extremely durable, beings of incredible power and strength like Kryptonians, Martians, Darkseid, Manhunters and Monitors are capable of hurting her.
Mental Attacks
- Memory Erasing: Zor-El used the Crystal of El to wipe her mind. She later had her mind wiped by Jor-El.

Early life

"Everything and everyone that I love is here on Krypton." - Kara to Zor-El, Lara.

Born into the noble House of El, Kara was the daughter of Zor-El and an unknown Kryptonian mother. She is of relation to Jor-El, Lara-El and Kal-El.

In 1986, Kara followed her aunt Lara to Earth, to visit the family Jor-El had chosen for their unborn son Kal -El if Krypton was destroyed by the war with General Zod. Kara watched as her crooked father Zor-El told Lara how he desired her, as well as that if he couldn't have her in the real world, how he would possess her through science. Zor-El then altered Kara's memory to forget what she had seen.

Later, back on Krypton, Kara was on her way to school when Augo stopped her from going and told her that he had a bad feeling about going. She rejected his idea and turned to go into school as it blew up, trapping her under a crystal column. After Augo lifted up the column, Kara ran to find her father, only to walk in on him having a conversation with Aethyr and Nam-Ek: she was shocked at his association with Zod and his advanced knowledge of the attacks on Kandor. Zor-El then told Kara that he was doing it all for Rao's prophecy that had predicted the creation of Brainiac, Zod's war, as well as Krypton's end. Augo then appeared and told Kara he was Zor-El's disciple, as well as that she was never in danger. Kara ran away and hid, but was soon found by Zor-El and Augo, who took her away.

Augo stayed with Kara while she was locked away by her father, as well as he tried to make her realize that Rao's prophecy was meant to be and that Zor-El would rule Earth and she would become a goddess. Kara pretended to believe in the prophecy, then pushed Augo into a chamber, locking him inside and sending the chamber down towards Krypton's core. She then went to the holographic communicator and contacted Lara, telling her about Zor-El's plans. Zor-El came in and tried to stop Kara, who pushed him onto the crystals, stabbing his back. Zor-El then pretended to be sincere, but pulled out a Crystal of El and wiped Kara's memory once again.

Later, Kara awoke as Zor-El was escorting her to the ship that would take her to Earth. Before she left the dying Krypton, she was given the blue crystal, which Zor-El told her contained instructions as to what to do when she found and rescued Kal-El. After bidding her father farewell, Kara entered the Red Ship and went into suspended animation.

Kara crash-landed in Smallville in 1989 during the first meteor shower. Her ship fell into the Smallville Reservoir adjacent to Reeves Dam, where she remained in suspended animation for 18 years.

Season Eleven

Sups kara — Clark finds Kara imprisoned by EarthGov.

Kara is transported to the 31st century, where she finds herself in the middle of Earth's war with New Krypton. Sometime during the war she is caught and held a prisoner by Minister Kirt Niedrigh inside an EarthGov holding facility. After Clark, who has embraced his destiny as Superman, is transported to the future too, he is informed of Kara's capture by Brainiac 5 and Lighting Lad. He breaks into the facility and finds Kara in a weakened state.

Together they fly up above Earth into outer space just as the setting of the sun begins. Clark begins to apologize for Kara's current predicament but Kara explains to Clark how she time-traveled into the future with his Legion ring because she was ordered by Jor-El to do so. Clark comments that he didn't even noticed his ring was missing as he was quite busy with his new role as "Superman". Kara mentions her pride in Clark embracing and fulfilling his Destiny. Clark then questions Kara about how "Supergirl" got involved in their war between Earth and New Krypton. She tells him that when she arrived in the future she was welcomed by Brainiac-5 and the Legion and after joining them they launched a diplomatic mission when they discovered Argo, the lost Kryptonian colony, but was sabotaged by someone from EarthGov and that event led to the start of the war. After that Kara left the Legion to rejoin her people. She also reveals that she was not an actually a prisoner but a spy for the Kryptonians.

Supercousins — Supergirl and Superman arrive on New Krypton.

Kara leads Clark to New Krypton when they come across a disturbance involving Legionaires Cosmic Boy and Saturn Girl surrounded by Kryptonian Eradicators. Superman and Supergirl appear on the scene defending Cosmic Boy and Saturn Girl. When Beh-Osk hears the Legionnaires call Superman as Kal-El, he realizes that Superman is the last son of ancient Krypton and is astonished by that revelation. He then calls all the Kryptonians to kneel before "Argo's salvation". Clark seems not so happy about that action and Kara says to him "Welcome home".

Jk00020 — Rokk asks for Kara's help to stop the war.

On New Krypton, Supergirl asks Cosmic Boy why he is not with his friend Lighting Lad, with whom he used to be very close and he responds that he and Imra are kind of avoiding him, suggesting he is in a relationship with Saturn Girl. Rokk then asks Kara to tell him what she has learned while she was a spy for the Kryptonians and help the Legion stop the war. Superman arrives on the scene and says to Kara that she doesn't have to say anything, betraying the Kryptonians' trust because he already knows everything. He reveals to Supergirl and Cosmic Boy that the war is not about politics but actually for another more religious reason. The Kryptonians actually want to recover Faora's body, whom they worship as their Goddess because of her tale that was told by Argo's settlers and eventually became myth. They believe that her body holds the key of unlocking their future as a people and that is why they sent Kara as a spy to locate the coordinates of Faora's tomb but without her actually know what she is looking for.

Supergirl Smallville s11 1370019884397 — An enraged Kara destroys one of EarthGov's ships with her heat vision.

When Kara and Clark head towards the tomb, they are ambushed by EarthGov air patrols which they deal with easily. After entering the tomb, a structure resembling a palace built by Zod, Kara wonders why he buried Faora there. Clark tells her that the original Zod and Faora couldn't have children so when his clone found out that her clone, whom he had killed, was pregnant with his child, he immediately regretted his actions and built this palace to honor her.

Supergirl Smallville s11 13700201849298 — Kara and Clark visit Faora's tomb.

Clark elaborates that when Zod was ready to conquer Earth, he built himself a throne in the very center of the structure, facing a pit where he had placed Faora's body frozen inside a crystalline cube. Kara asks why and Clark assumes that Zod did it out of guilt. They fly down the pit and visit Faora's grave where Clark explains about New Krypton's belief that her child was sacred, because it was conceived by Kryptonian clones under a yellow sun and might have held the answer to the limits of their race's DNA. Kara then notices a cartridge left from a DNA extraction device and wonders what might EarthGov want with the genetic material of Faora's unborn child.

AngryKara — Kara interrogates an EarthGov officer.

In the Amazon forest, outside Faora's tomb, Clark and Kara are discussing the rising tension between humanity and Kryptonians. Clark is torn as he was raised by humans and he understands and sympathies with how they might be fearful and hesitant to embrace a relationship with New Krypton and it might take a long time to do so. Kara chooses to side with her own people believing humanity will never change, like many of her kind, she does not think very highly of them either.

Kara goes to interrogate one of the frozen soldiers, intending to incinerate him with her heat vision, if she doesn't like his answer to her question on who defiled the tomb. Clark proceeds to fly in between them and places the soldier out of harm's way. Kara is enraged by Clark defending and seemingly siding with humanity rather than his own people.

Z51 (17) — Kara gets angry on how humans treat on the Kryptonians.

This leads in to a super confrontation between the two cousins, Kara gives a mean left hook punch to his face, sending him flying through a dozen trees in the forest and plummeting hard into the ground leaving a meteor-like trail. Kara prepares to charge at full speed towards Clark who is in the mist of recovery. As Kara approaches him, Clark super back-hands her, sending her flying backwards into another set of trees.

Sms11p7 — Clark manages to reason with Kara.

Z51 (20) — Kara apologizes for losing her temper.

Clark manages to explain to Kara that the humans are not all like Kirt Niedrigh, giving examples of his adopted parents and Lois. They both manage to calm each other down when suddenly Kara gets a call from New Krypton and at the same time Clark gets a call from the Legion. They both inform them that New Krypton is under attack, EarthGov managed to send Doomsday at the planet via a boom tube and the Kryptonians are launching their assault on Earth.

LOSH Smallville s11 1371826348528 — Kara leads the Legion.

Clark and Kara join the Legionnaires in space who have assembled to deal with the conflict, Kara takes command of the Legion leading them to Earth to save humanity, While Clark accompanied by Saturn Girl go to New Krypton to confront Doomsday and save the Kryptonian race from extinction.

LOSH Smallville s11 163-adri280891 — Kara and the Legion.

Arriving in Metropolis, Kara and the rest of the legion see that the Kryptonian gravity bomb has gone off causing the citizens to levitate uncontrollably. Kara beings to instruct the team on their assignments, Lighting Lad notices the approaching battalion of Earth Gov. ships, A voice from the intercom coming from the ship declares their presence is not their to fight but to aid the Legion, Both Lighting Lad and Brainiac 5 are uncertain in trusting Earth Gov. But Kara says that their been enough destruction to last a few lifetimes and decides to work alongside Earth Gov.

LOSH Smallville s11 166-adri280891 — Kara receives a communication regarding Clark.

Kara commands the Legion to work together with EarthGov to save everyone. As Kara begins her rescue efforts she receives a communication from the Chancellor of New Krypton who request her assistance immediately, Kara realizes what is happening and asked what is happening with her cousin.

LOSH Smallville s11 172-adri280891 — "Long Live The Legion".

Kara is present with the rest of the Legion to save Clark from plummeting into the sun. They create a buddy system link chain to pull Superman out of the sun pull. They rescued him and declared that they wouldn't allow Superman to self-sacrifice his destiny without a fight.

Together the Legion and the last two sole survivors of the House of El fly as one unit off of the sun, proclaiming "Long Live The Legion" and "Long Live The House Of El".

LOSH Smallville s11 179-adri280891 — Kara is happy she is finally able to decide her own fate.

Returning to space, Clark finds Kara floating high above looking outward in space. Clark attempts to make small chat between himself and her as he states "He always felt torn between two worlds" Kara acknowledges the this situation demonstrated that in a ridiculous matter so to speak. Clark offers Kara the choice to come back with him to present day 21st century with Booster and Skeets, also mentioning that Chloe would love to see her present at her upcoming baby shower in a few months, Kara says she wouldn't miss it but for now she's not quite ready to leave 31st century just yet as for the first time in her life she feels at peace because she doesn't have a mission assigned to her now her life is her own and she couldn't be happier.

Some time later, Supergirl, who has seemingly returned from the 31st century, flies over Lex, pretending to be Superman and then communicates with the Watchtower, saying that Luthor bought it, revealing that she was part of Clark's plan to make it look like she was Superman while he was actually on Lex's plane in his civilian attire.

When Emil Hamilton and Tess Mercer explain to Superman how the Monitor can hurt him, Emil tells Clark to seek help from Supergirl, but he refuses because he says if the Monitor can hurt him, he can hurt Kara, too.

Smallville - Chaos 007 (Digital-Empire)020 — Kara meets Conner, after catching a falling plane.

In the streets of Metropolis, Superboy saves a family from the Eclipsos. A girl then asks him if he is also able to save them from the falling plane. A startled Superboy, then watches the plane coming towards them. Luckily, Supergirl arrives and catches the plane on midair, saving everyone. Then she confronts Superboy saying it was about time she met the rest of the family.

Supergirl, Superboy and Hank Henshaw volunteer to find Bryce Gordon, and luckily enough, Tess has a lock on his position and sends them where he is.

Smallville - Chaos 010 (Digital-Empire)005 — Supergirl and Superboy try to take down Eclipso.

Smallville - Chaos 010 (Digital-Empire)008 — Kara saves the two civilians.

Superboy and Supergirl take down the possessed Bryce Gordon atop a building while a news chopper covers the action and the reporter inside is apparently arguing with her producer over whether or not to comment on Supergirl's outfit. The chopper is caught in the crossfire, and Supergirl rescues the reporter and the pilot. She also makes a point to thank the reporter for her "solidarity" on the outfit issue.

Henshaw suggests that Superboy and Supergirl offer themselves to Eclipso, which will likely draw the entity out of all the normal humans in order to manifest itself in super-powered beings. While it attempts to do that, they believe they can stop it. Supergirl then goads Eclipso, and he takes the bait, so he leaves the bodies of the civilians and makes Bryce Gordon throw up the diamond. Then all the power is centered in the diamond, which creates a huge Eclipso monster. The Eclipso monster says he is fascinated by the idea of having Superboy and Supergirl as his own Adam and Eve, in which they both respond with disgust.

Smallville - Chaos 011 (2014) (Digital-Empire)005 — Supergirl uses sound to shatter Eclipso's body.

Supergirl, Superboy, and Hank Henshaw continue battling Eclipso, who has now been transformed into a big humanoid made by the Eclipso gem, after emerging from his numerous hosts throughout Metropolis. Supergirl and Superboy discover that their respective abilities aren't stopping Eclipso, and they look to Henshaw for suggestions. Henshaw says sound vibrations might just force Eclipso to condense himself even further into a single diamond, and Supergirl grabs two giant church bells and bangs them together. When she sees that it works, she tosses another bell to Superboy, who follows the same strategy. Eclipso reverts to a single diamond that Henshaw and Supergirl catch in mid-air. Then Henshaw says there's only one way to make sure the diamond never falls into human hands again.

Later, Superman and Lois arrive at Watchtower where Tess Mercer, Chloe and Oliver along with Batman, Nightwing Martian Manhunter, Supergirl, Jay Garrick and his team of teenagers. Clark tells Chloe, Tess and Bruce to find out everything from one of the Manhunters he destroyed about the Crisis, because more ships are on their way. As Batman starts to examine the crumpled Manhunter head he wonders where are they going, Clark grimly says everywhere.

Smallville - Continuity 003 (2014) (Digital-Empire)020 — Kara and the rest of the team gather together.

The next day, Clark gathers all of the heroes onto his rooftop and gives them the lowdown. They can distract the Manhunters with physical attacks while Watchtower leads an evacuation to the heartland. If the distraction they provide fails everyone will die or be 'rebooted', but if they win everything will stay as it was and how they all remember the world. Clark tells them to say goodbye to their loved ones and suit up ready for war.

Superman delivers a rousing speech to the heroes. The other Earths might have been erased or rebooted but they are determined for their Earth to survive and their continuity to continue. With that Superman, Luthor and all of Earth's heroes attack the incoming Manhunters.

Superman spots the pod approaching Earth, feelings of sheer horror aside, he, Kara and J'onn try to stop the pod from hitting its target. Even with their combined might the pod overcomes them and speeds beyond them breaking the sound barrier.

Sv 4-05 — The Justice League welcomes a new family member.

After her son's birth, Chloe worries about the dangers in the world and the rise in heroes. Oliver reminds her they all fight for justice and will ensure their new baby will have a safe and healthy upbringing. Chloe laments that family should be here for their big occasion and Ollie smiles as he wheels her into the waiting room to be greeted by their 'family' composed of the heroes that they met over time.

Alternate realities

Season Seven

In an alternate universe to which Jor-El sent Clark in 2008, Kara was known as Linda Danvers: she was raised by the Luthors who, in this reality, knew of her Kryptonian lineage. She also worked for Lex as a federal agent for the Department of Domestic Security.

Kara was sent to arrest Lois. Fearing that she would betray him, Lex armed himself with kryptonite bullets to stop her. When Clark convinced Kara of his identity, the two confronted Lex, who shot them both. Lex then had Kara detained and taken away for medical treatment. Afterwards, Brainiac was going to use her to release General Zod, and repopulate the Earth with Kryptonians.

In the Comics

Supergirl Earth-One 002 — Supergirl as she appears in the comics.

Kara has been a regular character in the source material as far back as 1959 and there have been many versions of Supergirl throughout the years. Smallville's interpretation of Kara features aspects of all the Supergirl incarnations, from yesteryear to present. Her origin in the series, however, is influenced by the then-current Kara's incarnation, who was older than Clark and believed for a while Zor-El was evil and tried to use her to kill her cousin (later that Zor-El was revealed to be an hallucination induced by Kryptonite poisoning).

In her first appearance in the Silver Age, Kara Zor-El was introduced as the last survivor of Argo City, which had survived the explosion of the planet Krypton and drifted through space. When the inhabitants of the colony are slain by green kryptonite, which was released by meteorites striking the lead barrier, Kara is sent to Earth by her parents Zor-El and Allura to be raised by her cousin Kal-El. Fearing that she might not be recognized by Superman, Kara's parents provide a costume based on the Man of Steel's own. On Earth, Kara acquires powers identical to Superman's and adopts the secret identity of Linda Lee, a resident of Midvale Orphanage. She conceals her blonde hair beneath a brunette wig and functions as Supergirl only in secret, at Superman's request, until she can gain, in his opinion, sufficient control of her powers. After she is adopted by Fred and Edna Danvers, Superman decides his cousin is ready to begin operating openly as Supergirl. Supergirl's secret identity becomes a closely held secret known only to Superman, her foster parents, and the Legion of Super-Heroes.

She attends Midvale High School as Linda Lee Danvers. During her school years she dates Dick Malverne (former resident of Midvale Orphanage), gets her own super-pets Streaky (her orange cat, which acquires temporary superpowers as a result of his exposure to "X-Kryptonite", a form of Kryptonite Supergirl accidentally created in an unsuccessful attempt to neutralize the effects of Green Kryptonite) and Comet (a centaur turned into horse), befriends Lena Thorul (Lex Luthor's little sister), fights her first arch-enemies (Lesla-Lar, a Kryptonian scientist who intended to take over her body, Black Flame, the former's best friend, and Satan Girl, an evil clone of hers), joins the Legion of Super-Heroes (later briefly dating Legionnaire Brainiac 5) and befriends Barbara Gordon (Batgirl). During one of her adventures, Kara finds out that her biological parents survived the radiation poisoning that killed everyone else in Argo City by entering the Survival Zone (a parallel continuum akin to the Phantom Zone). They are eventually rescued by Supergirl and decide to live in the bottle city of Kandor.

In the Bronze Age, the character underwent revitalization under a new creative team. Wearing a series of new outfits, graduating from Stanhope College and leaving her adopted foster home with the Danvers Family, Linda goes on to San Francisco where she works as a junior photographer for news station KSF-TV. These stories introduced Supergirl's most memorable villain from this period: Lex Luthor's niece Nasthalthia "Nasty" Luthor. The villain doggedly pursues Supergirl for two years, trying to determine her secret identity. Kara also has to deal with other villains such like crime ringleader Starfire and sword-wielding sorceress Nightflame.

In later years, Linda changes careers and moves several times, holding jobs in student counseling and acting in a New York TV soap opera titled Secret Hearts. She also made her home in Chicago and began sporting a red headband, running into villains like Reactron, Blackstarr and The Gang.

In the 1980s, due to DC deciding that Clark had to be the only surviving Kryptonian, Kara was killed during the Crisis on Infinite Earths, sacrificing her life to save her cousin and the multiverse from destruction. During that period she was no longer a regular character and in fact, her entire existence was erased from continuity (however, several characters like Donna Troy or The Spectre recalled the original Kara Zor-El and her sacrifice). Over the years that followed however, several other Supergirls appeared until the reintroduction of the one, true Supergirl Kara Zor-El.

Before that, in the Many Happy Returns storyline, the then current Supergirl (Linda Danvers) encountered a rocketship that contained a young, vibrant Kara Zor-El from the Pre-Crisis reality. After a rocky start, the two became close, with Linda mentoring Kara on how to be a hero. However, The Spectre appeared before them and said that Kara's presence in the Post-Crisis era was going to destabilize time, and she was destined to die. Not surprisingly, the young Kara Zor-El did not tamely accept that she was destined to die at a young age and tearfully begged Linda to find some way to save her. Linda lied to her, in order to calm her down and send her away: only after she had departed did Kara Zor-El realize Linda's intent—Linda secretly took Kara's place and was sent to the Pre-Crisis era, posing as Kara and expecting to die in her place, in order to provide Kara Zor-El with a chance at life. Linda's very presence had altered the timeline, so the Spectre made her return home, not only to restore the time stream but to save Kara from Xenon, a being with a pathological hatred of Supergirl, who had captured the young Supergirl and planned to kill her. Linda defeated Xenon and had to send frightened young Kara back to her universe, knowing Kara, as an adult, would eventually die in the Crisis on Infinite Earths.

The modern version of Kara Zor-El made her debut in Superman/Batman #8. Kara was already a teenager at the time of Krypton's twilight and Kal-El's birth. Kara was the daughter of the scientist Zor-El, Jor-El's brother. Zor-El agreed with his brother's prediction that Krypton was doomed and anticipating this, built a dome around his hometown Argo City. Argo survived the destruction of Krypton thanks to his foresight, but when a Brainiac's drone started tearing the city up, Zor-El and his wife Allura sent their daughter to Earth in order to save her life, asking her to look after her infant cousin. Unfortunately, her rocket was encased in a kryptonite asteroid and unable to activate its faster-than-light drive, placed its passenger in suspended animation and arrived on Earth years late.

Her spaceship landed in Gotham City Bay. Upon her arrival, still with the mind and body of a 18-year old due to her suspended animation, Kara proceeded to act violently. She was highly confused after being awakened long after she was scheduled to. Fortunately, almost instantly from the time she crash-landed, Kara was tracked by Batman. After anesthetizing her with green kryptonite and examining her in the Batcave, Kara awoke in a rage. Luckily, Batman brought along Superman as "an insurance policy," and he calmed her down. Kara then explained her origins to the Man of Steel, who was overcome with joy. Superman turned to Batman with a smile and said, "This is Kara Zor-El... my cousin from Krypton."

After learning English and spending time with her cousin, as well as training under the tutelage of Wonder Woman and the Amazons, Kara was captured by Darkseid and rescued by her cousin and his teammates. No long afterwards, she introduced herself to the heroes of the DCU as Supergirl.

Unbeknownst to everyone, Kara suffered from severe Kryptonite poisoning, which caused amnesia, hallucinations and sudden mood swings for a while. Some of her visions terrified her because they showed her father telling her that she was sent to Earth to kill her cousin. In the end it was revealed that those visions were nothing but hallucinations and her true memories were restored.

Supergirl super — Supergirl's evil side.

Unlike previous incarnations, Kara is directly tied to the three members of the DC Universe Trinity (Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman). Viewing each of them as parents almost, Kara has been trained and educated and supported by all three. Kara has also had been a member of seveal super-hero teams, most notably Nightwing's Outsiders, the Legion of Super-Heroes and the Teen Titans. She also became affiliated with a splinter group of the Justice League led by Green Lantern to avenge the deaths of Martian Manhunter and apparently Batman. However, this group's actions failed to accomplish what they wanted, resulting in Star City being destroyed by Prometheus, Red Arrow's arm being cut off, as well as Lian Harper being murdered. After this, Kara was asked by the new Batman (Dick Grayson) to join the newly formed Justice League, alongside himself, Donna Troy, Starman, Congo Bill, Jade, as well as Jessie Quick.

Supbat 62 -0 — Supergirl changes to Linda Lang.

After several conversations with other heroes, Supergirl realized how badly she needed a secret identity to get a deeper connection with human beings, so she accepted Lana Lang's proposal to present her to the Daily Planet staff as Linda Lang, her teenage niece. Shortly after Kara discovered that both her parents were alive, as Kandor was ripped from Krypton and held captive by Brainiac. Superman and Supergirl managed to free Kandor. Unfortunately due to human prejudice against Kryptonians and the death of Zor-El, Kandor left Earth and was transformed into a full-sized planet, named New Krypton. With Kara's mother now the leader of New Krypton, Kara and Clark were both torn between their resurrected home world and their adopted world. Although they tried to build bridges between Earth and New Krypton, both planets went to war and New Krypton was destroyed. Kara had such a big breakdown, blaming herself for her inability to save her people, that she decided to give up her Supergirl identity. However she changed her mind after helping Bizarro-Girl save Bizarro World.

Supergirl Vol 6 1 Textless — Kara in The New 52.

In 2011 DC rebooted its universe. In the new continuity, Kara's ship lands as part of a meteor shower in Smallville, but hurtles through the Earth and emerges in Siberia. Kara has no memory of the destruction of Krypton and believes herself to be dreaming. The military tracks her arrival and a group of American soldiers immediately attack her. Her powers start emerging during the fight goes on and terrify the surprised Kara. Superman arrives after she defeats the soldiers and tries to convince Kara that he is her cousin, but Kara, still believing only 3 days have passed since she last saw baby Kal-El, accuses him of being an impostor and attacks him. Superman refuses to fight her lest they endanger innocents. When Kara realizes how close she has come to hurting innocent people, she also stops fighting. Superman explains to Kara that she is now on Earth and reveals to her that Krypton has been destroyed. Kara refuses to believe him and, uninterested in staying on Earth, decides to get her pod back. She goes back to her pod and is amazed by the fact that Superman is going to protect people in danger instead of helping her to find out if there is even a chance of Krypton being intact. However, Superman gives her a final warning telling her that she "is not prepared for this world." She then encounters a rich owner of the Corporation, named Simon Tycho, who steals her belongings from her pod to lure her in a trap in order to run tests on her. Kara succeeds to escape from Tycho, destroying his lab and taking her belongings back.

As Kara Zor-El flies outward from the Earth in search of her home planet of Krypton, she fails to realize that someone is following her. Kara is growing unsure that the super-human abilities she acquired on Earth will last long enough for her to survive the trip all the way to Krypton, but suddenly, she begins to feel a strange pull on the sunstone that she carries, recovered from the wreckage of her pod's crash landing. The stone pulls her to a strange device floating in the middle of space. Reluctantly, she passes through the field the device produces and realizes that she has emerged in a completely different sector of space. The pull on the stone grows even stronger and she follows it to a small blue star, which is revealed to actually be the ruins of Argo City, torn from the very surface of Krypton, somehow. Realizing that the place has been deserted for quite some time and that her friends and family are likely dead she makes her way to her father's lab where she finds a device which can activate her sunstone. The sunstone reveals a message from her father, Zor-El, recorded just moments before Krypton's inevitable destruction and it confirms Kara's fear that Kal-El was telling the truth. Zor-El explains that he has used a risky plan to attempt to save Argo, designing a force-field around the city in hope that the city will survive long enough for the people remaining to find a new home to live. There Kara meets an alien woman named Reign, who is one of the Worldkillers, a race of conquering warriors whose origin is traced somehow to Krypton. She and her people came to Argo on a mission to discover the mystery of their creation. Kara decides to stay at Argo and die at home but the voices of her parents awake her and encourage her to return to Earth. Upon returning to Earth Kara fights Reign and some other Worldkillers who try to take over Earth but she succeeds to defeat them, sending them away.

Supergirl-20-Power-Girl-New-52 — Supergirl and the Supergirl of Earth 2 (Power Girl).

Kara later meets and befriends a young girl, named Siobhan Smythe, who defends her against the military as she can't speak English herself. Kara then has to deal with Siobhan's father, Black Banshee, who haunts his daughter. Kara helps Siobhan defeat her father, even though due to his influence, Siobhan herself has been transformed to Silver Banshee. In her latest adventures Kara has also met Superboy, with whom she doesn't get along at first but later they reconcile. She also meets another Kryptonian, named H'El, who tries to recreate Krypton by destroying Earth. Kara teams up with H'El and engages in a romantic relationship with him. He also teaches her how to speak English. At the end Kara decides to do the right thing and prevents H'El, with Superman and Superboy, from destroying Earth. At a later adventure the trio travels back in time to stop H'El once again from saving Krypton and altering the history. Kara also teams up with Power Girl, an alternate version of herself from an another Earth, called Earth 2. She also encounters her father, who is revealed to not have died but rescued by Brainiac instead and transformed into a cyborg.

Feeling insolated, unable to fit in with Earth people, and betrayed and let down by everyone she meets, Kara's confusion, sadness and anger draw a Red Power Ring and she becomes a Red Lantern for a while. Ironically, becoming a Red Lantern helps Kara learn how to manage her anger and get over her most of issues. After freeing herself from her Red Ring, she makes a serious effort to adapt to life on Earth, and attends Crucible, an interstellar academia for young heroes.

Kara Jon — Kara admires Jon, and the resemblance he has with Kal-El as a baby.

After graduating, Kara's powers are being drained by a super-villain. Cameron Chase, Director of Department of Extranormal Operations helps her to get them back in exchange for helping the D. E. O. out. During that time, her cousin approaches to her to reveal that he is dying, and ask her to consider to protect Earth after he is gone.

In Dc rebirth, Kara gets to meet her cousin's Son, Jonathan who bombarded her with questions about Krypton and so much more.

Trivia

Actress Laura Vandervoort shares her birthday with the fictional character of Kara Zor-El/Supergirl: September 22.^[2]
Supergirl first appeared in Action Comics #252 (May, 1959). Her adventures were published in different books and magazines (Action Comics, Adventure Comics, her first solo book, Superman Family and her second solo book) nearly every month for twenty-six years until the character died during a 12-issue limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths in 1985. Afterwards, DC Comics introduced several non-Kryptonian Supergirls. In 2004, Kara Zor-El was finally re-introduced into the DC continuity in issue #8 of the Superman/Batman series.
A passing of the Torch is made by Helen Slater (who had previous played the role of Kara Zor-El/Supergirl in the 1984 Supergirl movie,) to Laura Vandervoort's Kara by playing aunt Lara.
In the episode Fracture, Kara named "Say It Again" by Marié Digby as her favorite song.

Kara is almost always seen wearing red, white or blue, along with a silver cuff bracelet.
Kara's futuristic Supergirl uniform is a combination of the a red and blue bodysuit with an overcoat like jacket that has the appearance of at as a cape. The design was constructed by Cat Staggs for Smallville: Season 11 story arc episode Argo and is very similar to a 2012 Superman cosplay design known as The Formal Superman.
Kara very frequently shows her belly with the clothes she uses.

In Supergirl, Lois even suggests the name "Power Girl" as a possible codename for Kara. Furthermore, the age of this incarnation of Kara Zor-El, upon arriving on Earth, is the same as Power Girl's (18-20), whereas the comic book Kara Zor-El was 15–16 years old, upon arriving on Earth.
In Season 10's Supergirl, The Daily Planet headline article refers to Kara as the "Maiden of Might". This is similar to The "Maid of Might" which is one of her nicknames in the comics.
Lois refers to Kara as Übergirl, twice, which directly translated means 'Supergirl'.
Kara is the only main character to have never been featured in a mid-season finale.
Kara seems to suffer an unlucky habit of being abruptly removed from Clark's life either because of others or by her own decisions. She has left a total of seven times:
- After entering Clark's life, she left for over a month because his cousin relied more on John Jones and she felt betrayed. (Cure)
- Later, Kara was punished by Jor-El for helping Zor-El and disappeared for a second time, ending up in Detroit powerless and with no memory of her past. (Blue, Fracture)

- After a year, Kara returns to Metropolis to help Clark to fight back the darkness, but soon realises that she needed depart again in order to find a way to defeat the menace. (Supergirl)
- Kara returned again, only to be ordered by Jor-El to leave Clark and find her own destiny, resulting in her being transported into the future. (Prophecy)
- Several months later Clark meets Kara when he travels to the 31st century. At the beginning Kara decides to stay in the future for a little while, but she eventually travels back to the present and is reunited with her cousin for good.
Kara is the only main female character (besides Lana) to not appear in Season Nine, but she was mentioned in Savior.
Laura Vandervoort portrays Brainiac posing as Kara in Arctic. In Supergirl, Vandervoort guest starred as Indigo, a character that, in the comics, was eventually revealed to be Brainiac 8.
Kara and John Jones are distrustful and hostile to each other in Smallville. The very opposite happens on the CW television series Supergirl, where Kara and J'onn/Martian Manhunter develop a father-daughter relationship.
At different times in Season Seven, Kara resided at the Kent Farm (Smallville, Kansas) and the city of Detroit, Michigan. It is unknown where Kara took up residence, after returning from the 31st Century. Dialogue by Tess Mercer in Chaos indicate that Kara does not live in Metropolis. In the comics, Kara has lived (among other places) in a town called Midvale, San Francisco, New York City, Chicago, and Santa Augusta (a fictional city in Florida).

In the comics Superman & Batman: Generation, Kara Kent is the name of Clark and Lois Kent's biological daughter.
Kara's arrival on Earth in the comics, in the New 52 relaunch, is a possible reference to Smallville, as her pod falls on the town in a meteor shower. However, the pod manages to crush through the planet and emerges in Siberia. Also, similar to her Smallville version, Kara remains several years in suspended animation inside her pod, spinning around the Sun.
