[edit] Physical Appearance

As the only castle in Lowell County, the Luthor Mansion lies near the outskirts of Smallville in a heavily wooded area, affording Lex absolute seclusion. Constructed primarily of sandstone, the castle was transported across the Atlantic from Scotland to its present site in Smallville in 1989, where it was painstakingly reconstructed stone by stone.

Its address is 100 Sayour Road, Smallville, Kansas. [1] In Season 7 it was revealed that it was the holding place for the Orb.

  • Lex Luthor lived in the mansion when he moved to Smallville in 2001 and until he disappeared in Season 7.
  • Lionel Luthor moved in a couple of weeks when he was blind, and again after his release from prison.
  • Lucas Luthor moved in when Lionel threw Lex out of the Mansion. (Prodigal)
  • Victoria Hardwick moved into the mansion in Season One, until Lex discovered that she was secretly stealing his computer files for her own financial gain.
  • Desirée Atkins moved into the mansion during her brief marriage to Lex.
  • Helen Bryce gave up a fellowship to Johns Hopkins after Lex asked her to move into the mansion in Season Two. She stayed there until they got married, leaving after her second disappearance.
  • Lana Lang moved into the mansion after the events of Dark Thursday. She stayed there throughout her relationship and marriage to Lex, leaving only after faking her death with a car bomb.
  • Kara Kent left the Kent Farm and moved into the mansion in Season Seven. She was motivated to move after getting amnesia and realizing that both Clark and Lana were hiding something from her. Lana and Chloe broke into the mansion and rescued Kara from having surgery performed upon her.
  • Major Zod and his army stayed there for several weeks after being released from the Orb until left to recruit more Kryptonians.

[edit] Security

Lex maintains a security staff of bodyguards. Despite this, guests often walk into his study unannounced, surprising him. There have been many security breaches and attacks in the mansion over the years, including:

  • In Season 1's Kinetic, three former football jocks used meteor rock tattoos to walk through walls into the Luthor vault. On their way out they punched Clark Kent to the floor, and pushed Chloe Sullivan out of a fourth story window.
  • In Season 1's Nicodemus, Pete Ross nearly killed Lex while under the influence of the Nicodemus flower.
  • In Season 2's Suspect, Sheriff Ethan Miller enters the mansion library and shoots Lionel Luthor twice in the chest.
  • In Season 2's Heat, Desirée Atkins uses pheromones to convince Jonathan Kent to attack Lex with a rifle in the mansion.
  • In Season 4's Onyx, the evil Alexander knocked Lex unconscious and imprisoned him in the wine cellar.
  • In Season 4's Run, Bart Allen used his super-speed to steal a Russian manuscript from Lex's mansion.
  • In Season 5's Arrival, Lana lured the Disciples of Zod to Lex's vault filled with meteor rocks. When her ploy failed, they knocked her across the room.
  • In Season 5's Lockdown, Lex is attacked by two police officers, who draw their guns and kill his assistant. Lex manages to get to his panic room in time. Later, Sheriff Nancy Adams is killed in the mansion by one of the police officers.
  • In Season 6's Static, Bronson set off the mansion's alarm system and then used metahuman powers to shift Lex into another dimensional frequency.
  • In Season 6's Crimson, Kal and Lois Lane crashed Lex's engagement party without security paying them any mind.
  • In Season 7's Lara, Kara Kent broke into the mansion in search of her blue crystal. Agent Carter also entered the mansion to capture Kara.
  • In Season 7's Siren, both the Green Arrow and Clark entered the mansion undetected during a battle between Lex and the Black Canary.
  • In Season 7's Descent, Clark broke into the mansion to look for the locket key.
  • In Season 8's Odyssey, Lois broke into the mansion dressed as a French maid. She was caught by Tess Mercer, who had her escorted out by security.
  • In Season 8's Instinct, Maxima broke in to find the Kryptonian crystal that sent a signal to her. She confronted Tess Mercer but when she realized her Kryptonian soulmate was not there, she left.
  • In Season 8's Bloodline, Oliver, disguised as Green Arrow, broke in to steal the crystal's generator. Tess Mercer caught him, but he paralyzed her for a couple of minutes before leaving with the generator.
  • In Season 8's Injustice, Oliver, disguised as Green Arrow, breaks into Tess Mercer's vault in her room and steals black kryptonite that Lex Luthor once owned.
  • In Season 9's Savior, Major Zod and his followers from the Kryptonian city of Kandor take Tess Mercer hostage and stay in the mansion for a short while. After they leave, it is revealed that Tess Mercer ordered her security team not to interfere in any manner, but simply get security footage of them. The footage was lost after Zod and his minions' departure.

[edit] Staff

A small but dedicated staff maintains the mansion.

Formerly, the Palmer family headed up the household staff, and was a fixture until their son Jeff attacked Victoria Hardwick and Lex. Lex had brought the Palmers with him from Metropolis.

[edit] Exterior

Lex holds a photograph of the Mansion at its original location in Scotland.

The approach to the Luthor Mansion is along a tree-lined private road.

The surrounding lawns are large enough to land Lionel Luthor's helicopter, allowing for quick flights to Metropolis and elsewhere. The grounds include exquisite sculpture gardens, a swimming pool, and a Greenhouse.

[edit] Interior

The main building in the Luthor Mansion is 200 feet long and 86 feet wide with an 82-foot high turret.

The Luthor ancestral home boasts a library, an armory with medieval weaponry, an exercise room, several servants quarters, a wine cellar and a grand ballroom. Inside, the mansion is adorned with priceless art pieces and ancient artifacts collected from around the world. Many of the rooms have oak and rosewood panels on the walls and teak floors, along with antiques and tapestries.

Inside Lex Luthor's spacious office, there is a desk, a fireplace with surrounding furniture, and a pool table, which has often been replaced by a piano. The office also contains stained glass windows illuminating the family crest. The office is known for its many entrances and a mezzanine level over the main entrance. One security feature to the mansion is the panic room behind the bookcase which has views of the whole mansion.

A locked room in the mansion housed Lex's "obsession": computer screens with a rotating CGI image of the octagonal key, the wall paintings from the underground cave, Roger Nixon's computer simulation of Lex's car hitting Clark Kent on the bridge, a large picture of Clark's face, an enlarged copy of Clark's family tree that he filled with Kryptonian symbols.

[edit] Filming Locations

The exterior shots are of Hatley Castle, in the Hatley Park National Historic Site, which is in Colwood, British Columbia. The interiors are filmed on a set. The castle is also known to fans of another superhero series; the X-Men films were partially filmed at Hatley Castle when it was used as the setting for Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.
