Martha and Jonathan

Martha and Jonathan Kent had a mostly idyllic relationship, though it was not without its difficulties.

[edit] Early years

Jonathan met Martha Clark at Metropolis University. She asked him for some notes, even though she was the note taker for the class. After that the two began dating. Jonathan then went to ask Martha's father for her hand in marriage. However Martha's father didn't like the fact that his daughter was going to marry some farmer and believed she deserved better than that. Jonathan hit William, and the two became estranged. Jonathan and Martha married anyway, and lived on the Kent Farm together. They were respected members of the Smallville community, as they raise animals and produce organic crops.

Martha was incapable of conceiving or giving birth but that never interfered with the depth and closeness of her relationship with Jonathan. After the meteor shower they found a 3-year old Kryptonian boy and brought him home. The Kents decided to adopt him and named him Clark after Martha's maiden name. Jonathan and Martha raised Clark with strong values, making sure that he knew right from wrong.

Clark's adoption created tension in the Kents' relationships. Martha decided that Clark's powers meant that she couldn't reconcile with her father without trusting him with Clark's secret. But unfortunately, Jonathan's long-standing history of disagreement with William Clark prevented them from trusting him. Also, the adoption papers they signed required that Jonathan compromise his integrity and convince the Ross family to sell Ross Creamed Corn. This allowed Lionel Luthor a foothold in the Smallville community, and started Jonathan's lifelong resentment of the Luthor family.

[edit] Season One-Two

Through the years, Jonathan and Martha had hard times like every married couple but they were both determined to keep Clark's true nature a secret. When Jonathan was infected with the Nicodemus flower, he openly made out with Martha in the kitchen. Martha became Lionel Luthor's personal assistant, but the job caused friction in her relationship with Jonathan. When Jonathan broke his leg trying to repair the tractor, Martha felt extreme guilt for not being there to help, and offered to quit working for Lionel.

Martha was cured of her infertility by Clark's ship and became pregnant. She hid the pregnancy from Jonathan for a while, explaining to him that she kept it secret because she thought that saying it out loud would make it go away. When Martha was infected with kryptonite spores, Jonathan learned that she was pregnant but she later lost the baby.

[edit] Season Three-Four

When Jonathan was comatose for three months in the Smallville Medical Center. However, his heart problems continued and he was prescribed a variety of medications to combat them. Martha, having taken the job of Talon manager, admitted tension, worry and misgivings about Jonathan's health and confessed to spending long hours on the job to escape from the stress of worrying about Jonathan. Jonathan and Martha were forced to leave Smallville because of another meteor shower heading for Smallville. They were intercepted by Jason Teague, who threatened to kill Martha unless Jonathan told him what he needed to know. Jonathan and Martha managed to survive the second meteor shower.

[edit] Season Five

In Season Five of Smallville, Jonathan and Martha's relationship ended when Jonathan had a heart attack and died to save his son. Even after Jonathan's death, Martha and Clark wished he was still around and wondered what he would do when they had problems.

Months after Jonathan's death, Martha started to go to Lionel Luthor for help with her and Clark's problems. Clark began to get worried that Martha was starting to get into a relationship with Lionel Luthor.

[edit] Season Six

Even though Jonathan passed away, Martha still thought about him, but she seemed to have feelings for Lionel Luthor as well. However, around the end of the season, she moved away from Smallville to be a US Senator.
