Martian

From Smallville Wiki

Martians are a green humanoid alien race that were native to the planet Mars.

At some point in Martian history, their civilization was destroyed, leaving the planet deserted with only one sole survivor: J'onn J'onzz aka Martian Manhunter, who fled to the neighboring planet Earth where he lived under the alias John Jones. In addition to living on Earth, he was an Intergalactic Law Enforcer who helped the Kryptonian scientist Jor-El trap and imprison criminals from the 28 known galaxies.

[edit] Powers and Abilities

Martians possess many powers and abilities that have similar characteristics to Kryptonians, but have some other abilities that Kryptonians don't have.

  • Super Strength - Martians have super-strength that are on some level comparative to Kryptonian super-strength, but are not as strong.
  • Flight - Allows Martians to defy gravity and use their body to propel themselves through air and space, leaving behind a red trail.
  • Shapeshifting - Allows Martians to shift into any living shape.
  • Healing Factor - Allows Martians to heal from any self-incurred wound by leaving earth's atmosphere.
  • Telepathy - Martians can read minds and communicate with other living beings by connecting their mind to the other, with this being another ability that Kryptonians don't possess.
  • Heat Blast - Martians can create heat from their palms.
  • Superhuman Durability - Martians are very durable. They can make their bodies extremely hard, or very soft.

[edit] In the Comics

In the comics, Martians have additional powers and abilities:

It seems that in the comics Martians have all Kryptonian abilities and more.

  • Intangibility: - Martians have the ability to pass through solid objects by moving their body particles, elongating their body limbs as well as growing their bodies to immense size.
  • Invisibility: - Allows a Martian to become invisible, allowing them to sneak up on people and opponents.
  • X-ray vision: - Is similar to Kryptonian vision in which Martians can see through any solid object with no exceptions.
  • Arctic Breath: - Martians can create high winds/tornadoes with their breath.
  • Super hearing: - Allows Martians to hear sounds from miles away.
  • Superhuman Durability: - Martians are very durable. They can make their bodies extremely hard, or very soft.
  • Superhuman Endurance: - Martians can survive in harsh conditions. They can progress even when they become damaged or hurt.
  • Super Stamina: - Martians can run or exercise for long periods of time without getting tired.
  • Longevity: - Martians can live for long periods of time.
  • Invulnerability: - Martians are immune to human illnesses and bullets bounce off them.

[edit] Vulnerabilities

Martians, like Kryptonians, have one vulnerability that is able to injure them despite their invulnerability.

Fire affects Martians mentally and physically, as when Martian Manhunter entered Clark Kent's mind, the phantom that was trying to take control of Clark's mind used a flame to weaken Martian Manhunter. It is possible that a Martian's weakness to fire is well-known throughout many galaxies, as the phantom was aware of Martian Manhunter's weakness.

Martians are vulnerable to physical attacks despite being invulnerable, suggesting Martian invulnerability is more increased durability when compared to a Kryptonian's, such as when Bizarro possessed a human and ripped a hole in Martian Manhunter's abdomen. They also cannot heal while inside Earth's atmosphere.

When exposed to high concentrations of fire, Martians lose their abilities, either temporarily or permanently. Martian Manhunter had his abilities taken away after he flew Clark into the sun to regain his abilities.

[edit] Survivors

  • J'onn J'onzz - Is the last remaining Martian who fled Mars after the entire civilization was destroyed by unknown circumstances. He traveled to Earth and shape-shifted into a human disguise; he currently resides on the planet whilst also being an Intergalactic Law Enforcer. Due to exposure to the intense heat of the sun's corona, J'onn is currently powerless.

[edit] Martian Devices, Artifacts and Technology

It is possible to think that Martian technology greatly surpassed that of human technology. The Martian Manhunter carries technology that is similar to the Crystal of El, which suggests that Mars' technology was, to some degree, on par with the planet Krypton's.

  • Phantom Zone crystal - Martian Manhunter carries a Martian crystal that allows him to capture Phantoms.
  • Infrared- Martians use infrared technology with their communications, as mentioned by Kara Kent while talking with Jimmy Olsen about their common interest on aliens in Cure.
