The University of Metropolis, also called Metropolis University or simply Met U, is a major university in Metropolis. Considered a first-tier tertiary institute nationwide, it has an excellent medical school and astronomy program among other things, and also has programs in journalism, botany, and biochemistry.

Metropolis University also has a strong college football program with a passionate alumni and fraternity/soriority support, and the blue-and-white colored Metropolis Bulldogs team is competitive in the national championship.

The University dormitory sustained extensive damage during Dark Thursday.

Students[]

  • Lois Lane attended Metropolis University for less than a year, before being expelled for repeated disciplinary offenses such as gamble-drinking.[1]
  • Chloe Sullivan majored in Journalism at Met U, having also taken Botany and Biochemistry classes, all while interning at the Daily Planet in the evening.
  • Lana Lang applied for late entry and attended Met U for about a year, where she indulged her growing obsession with Astronomy. Against the wishes of her boyfriend Clark, Lana chose Met U over Central Kansas A&M (CKU), claiming that it was specifically because CKU didn't have the Astronomy classes she wanted. She initially lived with the Tri-Psi sorority house, but got infected by a vampiric virus. After her breakup with Clark, she became addicted to the Limbo drug created by some Met U medical students.
  • Buffy Sanders was a vampiric metahuman who became the president of the exclusive Tri-Psi Sorority, until she was challenged and killed by Lana. [2]
  • Karen was Chloe's estranged roommate when the latter first started in Met U, but she transferred to NYU out of fear after the Tri-Psi Sorority incident. Her vacated bed was soon taken up by Lana Lang, much to Chloe's joy.
  • Geoff Johns was a star Metropolis Bulldogs football players, until being exposed for cheating his physical exams and apprehended for murdering his roommate Coop and attempting to kill Lois Lane.[3]
  • David "Coop" Cooper was Geoff Johns' roommate and fellow Metropolis Bulldogs football player, until Geoff paralyzed and then murdered him.
  • Lance and Ally were Met U medical students who created the Limbo drug, which when injected took the subject to a near-dead state of consciousness in which they can speak to their departed love ones. [4] Both were killed later — Ally due to overdose complications, and Lance due to accidentally falling onto a bone saw.
  • Kyle Waterston was a freshman at Met U before he was murdered by Ted Palmer.[5]

Alumni[]

  • Jonathan Kent was accepted into Met U with a full football scholarship and had attended Finance classes, but later gave it up to return home and help out his ailing father Hiram at the farm. He somewhat regretted the decision later in his life, and had attempted to convince his adopted son Clark to not do the same.
  • Martha Clark met Jonathan Kent while taking a Finance class at Met U. Martha asked Jonathan for some notes, even though she was the note-taker for the class. When Martha asked how he knew she would return them, Jonathan told her, "I prefer to believe in people." [6] She fell in love with Jonathan after that day, and married him despite the stern objection of her father.
  • Steven Hamilton was known to have been a doctor at Met U, until he was disgracefully kicked out after having had inappropriate relations with a student.
  • Lex Luthor studied at Met U at some point, but was later thrown out by Edgar Huff when Lex played a humiliating joke on his son. [7]
  • Jason Teague attended Met U with a football scholarship and set a pass record playing quarterback for the Bulldogs, until a torn rotator cuff ended his future football career as well as his scholarship. He later transferred to Central Kansas A&M, while working part-time as an assistant coach at the Smallville High School.

Prospects[]

  • Clark Kent was offered a football scholarship at Met U after leading the Smallville Crows to win the state championship. He was initially excited about playing for the Metropolis Bulldogs, but got disillusioned after the Geoff Johns incident and decided to turn down the scholarship. Despite his parents still willing to fund him to Met U, Clark opted instead to attend Central Kansas A&M so he could be nearby and still help out his family on the farm.

Employees[]

  • Arthur Walsh was known to have conducted research at the university.

Behind the Scenes[]

  • The Metropolis University in Smallville was based on the real-life University of British Columbia (UBC) in the Canadian city of Vancouver, British Columbia, where Smallville was produced.
    • The night shot of Met U in Recruit is actually the exterior of the Walter C. Koerner Library at UBC's main Point Grey Campus, which was also used as the daytime exterior for the CKU in Thirst.
    • The exterior of the Met U dormitory shown in Thirst, where Karen, Chloe and Lana resided, is actually that of the UBC Chemistry building also on the Point Grey Campus, just across the corner from the Koerner Library.
  • The Metropolis Bulldogs Stadium featured in Recruit is actually Vancouver's BC Place Stadium. The stadium's original air-supported fiberglass dome (featured in the show) was later damaged by ice accumulation in January 2007, and eventually replaced by a new cable-supported retractable roof in 2010.
