[edit] Career

Having been in Hollywood only two years, Sam Jones III is already making quite a name for himself. He recently completed leading roles in two upcoming feature films, Zigzag and Snipes, as well as having guest-starred in several television series. His role as Clark Kent's best friend Pete in the action-adventure drama Smallville marks his series-starring debut.

Growing up in Boston, Massachusetts, Jones acted in local commercials. After spending a summer vacation with a friend living in Los Angeles, he caught the showbiz bug and decided to pursue a career in acting. Soon after he graduated from high school, Jones moved to Hollywood to follow his dream. His first job was a memorable guest-starring role on NYPD Blue in which he portrayed a troubled teen who stole a gun and hid it in his daughter's crib. From there, his career began to grow. His credits include an emotionally charged recurring role on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation in which he played a teen who accidentally killed a girl and then watched as his grandfather attempted to take the blame. He also guest-starred on Judging Amy as a sexually abused teen who gets mixed up in a drive-by shooting. Jones will appear in two episodes of the new R.L. Stine series The Nightmare Room, beginning this fall on Kids' WB! When he is not working, Jones spends his time on the basketball court. He currently lives in Los Angeles and will relocate to Vancouver for the filming of Smallville.

[edit] Reason for Departure

Over the course of the three seasons he was on Smallville, Sam basically played a background character with not much character development or screen time. This seemed to change somewhat in season three with Pete's street racing career in Velocity and his parent's divorce in the latter half of the season. Behind the scenes, he demanded more story arcs and better material from the producers, who maintain that he didn't want to be on anymore and wanted more money. Sam's final appearance on the show was Forsaken, in which Pete left Smallville after getting attacked by an FBI agent whom was working for Lionel Luthor. Fans have complained that he was not given a proper send-off or good storylines, but Al Gough states that he was hard to place in the story and did not contribute much to Clark's overall arc.

Ever since his departure, fans of the show have been wanting Sam back on the show as a recurring character, to which the producers have been trying to get him on for guest stars. They said he would only come back, if they could find the right story arc to put him in, because they felt somewhat guilty for not giving him too much to work with. He was to make an appearance in a season four episode on a rival high school football team against Clark's and as Chloe's date for the prom, but he could not do so due to scheduling conflicts. In September 2005, Al Gough stated that Pete Ross will not be appearing again, as he is still difficult to place in the storyline and was more about Clark's past, thus making it pointless to put him in the story. Finally in 2008, Pete returned to Smallville in Hero as a metahuman who could stretch his limbs while chewing kryptonite chewing gum.
