The "Pilot" episode of Smallville describes the population as 25,001 in 1989 and 45,001 in 2001. For such a small town, they seem to have an inordinate number of deaths. This article details the body count of each episode in Season Two. Serious injuries and other crimes are also noted, but only actual lives lost are tallied. Likewise, although Clark saves people from various ill fates, his rescues are counted if death seemed reasonably certain. Since the death of a metahuman is not always certain, continual updates are expected.
Part One of this episode ended with the following lives in jeopardy: Roger Nixon, Jonathan Kent, Lionel Luthor, and Lana Lang. They were caught up in a terrible tornado storm. Jonathan saves Roger from the tornado. Lex saves Lionel, and Clark saves Lana, but then Roger tries to kill Jonathan and Lex shoots him in the back.
Steven Hamilton kills Ray Wallace and would have killed Pete Ross if Clark hadn't arrived in time. Pete then has to save Clark from meteor rock. Finally, Dr. Hamilton succumbs to his profound exposure to the meteors.
Lawrence Garner held Ryan James against his will. The doctors at the hospital believed that his experiments caused Ryan's tumor to grow. In spite of everything that Clark, Lex, and the doctors tried to do, Ryan died.
Kyla Willowbrook killed a LuthorCorp foreman and threatened Martha Kent. It does not seem likely that Martha Kent's life was in danger, but Lionel Luthor was in real danger when Clark intervenes. Kyla dies after cutting herself while jumping through a window in wolf form.
Tina Greer kills someone in faking her death. While impersonating Whitney Fordman, she kills a lieutenant who came to tell Mrs. Fordman that Whitney's remains were found in Indonesia. Clark almost dies of kryptonite exposure due to Lana's necklace, but his ship saves him. Tina is killed in a fight with Clark.
Clark saves Pete from Sheriff Miller when he shoots at the car and blows it up. The Sheriff kills the bartender. The staff at the mansion and the doctors at the medical center save Lionel Luthor. They have the death penalty in Kansas, so Clark actually saves Jonathan's life when he saves him from murder charges and exposes Sheriff Miller.
Travis and two other students kill themselves in dangerous accidents after being infected with a parasite. Chloe Sullivan and Pete Ross are also infected with the parasite. Clark is able to get them to a hospital before they do themselves in.
Lucas uses a bystander as a human shield. Lex Luthor saves Lucas from his pursuers. Clark saves Lucas from a henchman on a motrocycle with an automatic weapon. That henchman is killed in police custody. Clark also tries to save Lionel Luthor from Lucas, but that gun was loaded with blanks as part of a scam.
Andy attacks Lana. Clark saves her, but Andy probably wouldn't have killed her. Paul Hayden kills Lexs henchman and attacks Helen Bryce and leaves her for dead. She is saved by Lex Luthor's quick arrival on the scene. Lex hunts down Paul and very nearly kills him. He is saved by the positive influence Helen has been in Lex's life.
Thugs steal kryptonite from a LuthorCorp truck, injuring the driver seriously. They throw Clark into a blast furnace which certainly would have killed him if he were human or if the the thugs hadn't driven off with the kryptonite. They also strung up Martha and Jonathan Kent. Clark subdues them and the cops take them into custody.
When Clark destroys his ship, the Kents truck is overturned and Martha Kent loses the baby. Lex will later reveal that Helen killed the pilot.
