While trying to remember the three phrases his father told him, Lois sends him the third phrase in a text message, showing him she is there for him. Suddenly Clark hears a bullet train in Japan that cannot be stopped so he goes back to work. Inside the train there is a small boy, named Hiro Okamura, who is playing with his robots and toys when suddenly the train runs at full speed to a fatal accident. Tess, who observes the situation and supports Superman from the Watchtower, informs "Boy Scout" of a fluctuation in Earth's magnetic pole that has destabilized the train's track system but still she does not know what caused it.

Superman is surrounded by nervous people questioning him about his status as an alien.

Fortunately Superman succeeds in saving the train, slowing it down and no one gets hurt, but then nervous people start to question him about his origin and if there are more aliens like him, that they should be afraid of. Tess informs them that Lex is preparing his jet to visit Moscow and Lois thinks of a way to sneak in as a press attaché and go to Russia with Lex so she can keep an eye on him. Main characters[]

Recurring characters[]

Cameo[]

Title[]

  • The title refers to Superman's status as an alien, which he exposed to the rest of the world in Olympus.
  • The title also refers to the Monitor.

Notes[]

  • Superman speaks fluent Japanese and understands Russian.
  • During the group's discussion about Earth-2 and the Monitors, Tess questions them calling the Smallville main universe Earth-1. Noting that their Earth could be Earth-37, for all they know. It was later revealed that this is not the case as Earth-37, which was a seperate Earth, was also destroyed because of the Monitors.
  • When Lex asks Otis when was the last time he had cognac, Otis says at Bibbo's. This mention is a nod to a character from the comics named, Bibbo Bibbowski, a former world heavyweight boxing champion and owner of the Ace of Clubs.
  • The criminals in the warehouse, where Batman drops in, were talking about a criminal named "Hatter". This mention is a nod to the classic foe of Batman called Mad Hatter, who is modeled after the character of the same name from Lewis Carroll's novel, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
  • While fighting with Batman, Bane tried to hurt him with his signature move, which was first featured in the Knightfall storyline. In that story, Bane succeeded to defeat Batman by raising him up and throwing him down upon his knee, breaking his back and leaving him a paraplegic. Because of that he is often credited for being the only villain to have "Broken The Bat" and this iconic moment is often recreated and alluded to numerous times in most of the character's appearances in other media with the most recent being the live-action film, The Dark Knight Rises.
  • When Batman asks Barbara why she was late, she tells him she was on a date with an acrobat and when he asks what is his name she tells to him that he must figure it out on his own. This mention is a nod to Dick Grayson, the first sidekick of Batman, known as Robin, who along with his parents was originally a circus acrobat. In the comics, Dick was a prominent love interest for Barbara as he was the original Robin and she was the original Batgirl. Grayson was also the first to take the mantle of Nightwing, a title that Barbara has in Smallville. Barbara later mentions that the boy she is dating is always busy with his parents' circus, this is a nod to Haly's Circus, a traveling circus that was once home to the Flying Graysons, Dick's parents.
  • The "Superman" costume of the young dead man found in Gotham City is a nod to the costume that Clark Kent wears in his early adventures as Superman in the New 52, which have been featured mostly in the pages of Action Comics. Originally the idea of Superman's first costume being a lot simpler (blue jeans, T-shirt with the "S" symbol and work boots) than the iconic costume he later adopts was first introduced in Smallville, where in the most parts of the show he had the red-jacket/blue-shirt look. This simpler look has also being used by some other members of the Super Family in the comics like Superboy and Supergirl (Linda Danvers).
  • While being interrogated by Batman, Zsasz mentions "Quinzel" as his psychiatrist. This is a nod to Harley Quinn's alter ego Dr. Harleen Quinzel, who was a psychiatrist in Arkham Asylum before she became The Joker's henchwoman and girlfriend.
  • After the sixth issue of the main story arc miniseries, Smallville: Alien will be on hiatus for a month and on the four Fridays of the remaining weeks during the hiatus, the four-part miniseries, Smallville Special: Harbinger, will be released instead. After the hiatus, Smallville: Alien will return non-stop until its final issue.
  • Tess mentions that she enlisted the help of a communications expert called "The Ray", which in the comics has been the name of four individuals, all superheroes. The Ray's powers has been associated with generation of light and solid light constructs.
  • The idea of a Jokerized Batman was also featured in the New 52's crossover event between Batman related titles, called Death of the Family, where Joker after abducting Damian Wayne (Robin) presents to him a brainwashed by the Joker toxin, Batman, telling Damian that he has to kill his father or else Batman will kill him. Unwilling to kill him, Damian chooses death, but the Joker kills Batman, who in the end is revealed to be a fake.
  • The fact that the alternate (Jokerized) version of Batman stabbed Barbara Gordon in the belly, while saying to her that he killed the Barbara of his world, who was on a wheelchair, is a nod to the famous storyline The Killing Joke, which features the shooting and paralysis of Barbara Gordon (a.k.a. Batgirl) by the Joker, an event that laid the groundwork for her to develop the identity of Oracle.
  • The scene where Superman flies directly into the beam of Monitor's ship, using it against itself and destroying it, is a nod to a scene from the film Man of Steel, where Superman destroys in a similar manner a terraforming world engine activated by Zod to transform Earth into a new Krypton.
  • In the last issue of the Alien storyarc, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, also known as the DC Trinity, appear together for the first time in the Smallville universe.
  • Upon seeing Nightwing and Batman together, the Bruce of Earth-13 says that it "brings a smile to my face". This is a reference to the Joker's line: "Gotham City... always brings a smile to my face", in the 1989 movie Batman.
  • Chernobyl is implied to be a city in Russia (and within driving distance of Moscow). In actuality, Chernobyl is a city in Ukraine.

Continuity[]

Discontinuity[]

  • Superman is surprised that Ray-Lan can hurt him without any color of Kryptonite or red sunlight. Apparently, Clark has forgotten about the Palak, General Zod (in the episode Zod), Baern, Gloria, Aldar, Titan, and Bizarro. Objects and beings from other planets were frequently able to get blood out of Clark, or pose a life-threatening danger to him.
