Talk:Pilot

From Smallville Wiki

I might have found another discontinuity in this epsiode, but I am not so sure about it: There is a scene (still before the first meteor hits Smallville) when Lionel closes a contract with black farmers (probably Pete's family) and I think it is inconsistent with the featured time-line of the episode Lineage. According to Jonathan, Lionel was willing to nullify Clark's adoption papers, if Jonathan wouldn't persuade the Ross-brothers to sell their land. It implies that the contract was signed sometime after the meteor shower. Any comments? Dva 23:12, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Ah interesting find! I just re-watched the scene, and didn't see anything tying it to the Ross Creamed Corn factory (other than the ethnicity of the farmers). Or if it was the Ross family, maybe the deal was tied up in legal paperwork and the Rosses had second thoughts? I do a lot of business contracts myself, and it's rarely a "sign right here" sort of situation (even though the farmer definitely says something like, "Where do I sign?"). There are often escrows and legal reviews that have to be done by banks and lawyers... especially true here, since most farms in Smallville have financial troubles and so the banks would have to approve any deals. --Kanamekun 00:41, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
That's a really good observation. It probably is supposed to be the Rosses and the Creamed Corn deal, but I'd agree with Kana, that it's unlikely them standing in the field that day would be the end of the deal. From what I understand, they were willing to sell their factory, but Lionel either low-balled them or turned it into a LuthorCorp plant without their agreement. So it's possible that they signed something before the shower to sell, but then later when faced with what he really wanted to do with it, they needed persuasion from another farmer (Jonathan) to go through with it. The Pilot episode of Smallville is the first episode of the series. It aired on October 16, 2001 on the WB Television network, setting a record audience of 8.4 million viewers. It was written by series creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar and directed by David Nutter.

The first episode of the show introduces several key characters and events that continue to shape the show. It begins with the most pivotal moment in the series, the first meteor shower that hit the town of Smallville in 1989, forever changing the lives of the residents and even the visitors, most notably Lionel and Lex Luthor. Viewers were then introduced to a fourteen-year-old Clark Kent, a superpowered teen being raised by his loving parents Martha and Jonathan Kent. Like any normal kid, Clark was at a crossroads, about to start high school with his close friends Pete and Chloe, and his eternal crush, Lana Lang.

In the pilot, Clark saved the life of Lex Luthor and the two began a complicated and unlikely friendship. The event caused Clark to question his strange abilities and his parents finally told him of his true origins. Clark learned that he, in fact, arrived on Earth at the same time as the devastating and destructive meteor shower. As a result, Clark developed a need to use his powers to save and help others.

The pilot also introduced a basic formula for the show, in the form of Jeremy Creek, the show's first "meteor freak". A majority of the show's first episodes showcased a different individual that had been affected by the meteor shower and gained phenomenal superhuman powers.
