Featured Article

Any user can use this box to pick a Featured Article. Select a completed, well-written article of any kind (except stubs or works-in-progress) and put your choice on the next available month. If you would like to write a blurb about the article to be featured on the Main Page, you can put it on the Talk page of the article. It can be placed on the Main Page on the first week of your chosen month. Blurbs should be between 3-500 words (including wiki formatting) and you can also indicate which photo you want to use. If you want to suggest an article but do not wish to write a blurb, that's okay too.

[edit] Featured Article discussion

(Please place any discussion about the Featured Article here.)

  • We had originally scheduled Tess Mercer and Lois Lane for the Featured Articles for July and August, respectively, but they are not polished enough to be featured, so I've removed them. Both articles need extensive editing. Plot summary needs to be past-tense and more streamlined, then they can be featured. Marikology 03:35, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Site logo

User:RedBlueBlur has created a new logo for the site. What does the community think about replacing it? (Anonymous opinions are welcome.

[edit] Lists

Hi, I'm relatively new to this wiki. Are there any lists here? For example:

  • List of DC Comics characters appearing on Smallville - this used to be on Wikipedia but it got deleted. Would have all comics characters and their episode of first appearance, including main characters (Clark, Jonathan, Lex, Lana etc) and secondary/minor characters (Braniac, Zod, Maggie Sawyer etc).
  • List of people who know Clark's Secret - e.g. Clark, Lana, Chloe, Lionel...and people like Ryan etc

Are things like this already available, and if not, is there a place on the wiki for things like this? Kidburla 20:17, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

There are some lists, but they tend to be replaced by categories. For example, the List of Newspapers was replaced by Category:Newspapers. Or Category:Secret keepers. In general, I think that lists are usually done on this wiki with Categories, if possible. That said, there are a few lists that have survived on the wiki:
Hope that helps! --Kanamekun 20:53, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
The problem with lists pages is that they are often redundant to categories, and contain the same information as the articles they list. Also, unless someone makes a conscious effort to add to them, they are often incomplete or incongruent with the categories of the same thing. The only lists on the wiki like Kana listed are of things that do not have their own pages. There is a list of comics characters, like you are talking about on the Allusions to the Superman Universe page. Marikology 01:29, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] custom edit buttons

I noticed that this wiki doesn't have any custom edit buttons, not ever one for things like a redirect, if there is anything that anybody would like a new edit button for I'd be interested in writing the javascript for it, I would just need an admin to copy and past it into the MediaWiki:Common.js page. Reddo 01:47, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

I got your message about that-- I'm sorry I haven't replied. I'm hopeless with this customizing wiki software, even if you just tell me where to copy-paste, I'll probably mess it up. I'll ask User:Kanamekun to contact you if I don't first. Marikology 01:59, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Sure, give me the code and I'll try adding it to the common JavaScript. If it doesn't work, we can always revert :-). --Kanamekun 02:11, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Here's the code for a redirect button I also wrote one for a quote break from your episode guide pages, just copy and paste it into the MediaWiki:Common.js page

/* START OF CUSTOM EDIT BUTTONS */
 if (mwCustomEditButtons) {
   mwCustomEditButtons[mwCustomEditButtons.length] = {
     "imageFile": "http://images.wikia.com/central/images/c/c8/Button_redirect.png",
     "speedTip": "Redirect",
     "tagOpen": "#REDIRECT [[",
     "tagClose": "]]",
     "sampleText": "Insert text"};

   mwCustomEditButtons[mwCustomEditButtons.length] = {
     "imageFile": "http://images.wikia.com/smallville/images/c/cd/Quote_button.PNG",
     "speedTip": "Quote Break",
     "tagOpen": "<hr width=50%/>",
     "tagClose": "",
     "sampleText": ""};
}
/*END OF CUSTOM EDIT BUTTONS*/

If there's anymore buttons you want let me know, I could also create preload template buttons for you, so when you start a new page you can preload it with a blank episode page or something with just a click, an example of this can be found here. I did all of the customizing on that entire wiki so if there's anything that you like let me know and I'll adapt if for this one. Reddo 03:07, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Templates

How do I make a template? ChaosMaster16 22:16, 10 July 2008 (UTC)ChaosMaster16

What I do is go to the page of one that already exists. Then I manually type in the name I want the new template to have in my browser window and press enter. It will say "oops, there is no article called that, do you want to start it?" then you're good to go. I am less inept at templates than I am at other logistical wiki things, so let me know if you can't figure it out or need any rough drafts deleted. Marikology 04:19, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Smallville Official Companions

What do you guys think about creating separate pages for these official companion guides:

--Kanamekun 01:06, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

I think they'd be a great addition to the site. However, since they are books, I think we'd have to get permission or page pre-approval from the author (Craig of K-site) to do any extensive quoting, summarization, or paraphrasing. He might be reluctant to let us have a page with all the little known interesting facts and trivia, cos then people wouldn't buy the book. Another option is offering to let him author the page himself, then admin-lock it, so he can decide what to divulge and what you learn if you buy it. He's pretty accessable, so I say go ahead and ask him. I'd offer to, but as you can see, I can't even keep up with the Featured Articles these days. FAIL. Marikology 01:23, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
Yah we definitely want to respect copyright! I think we should be ok though? You can't copyright facts (only the expression of those facts), so we can pull interesting facts and trivia into the pages – as long as we follow the ground rules you mentioned (limiting direct quotes).
As for people not buying the books - I didn't even really know there were official companion guides! I mean I sorta knew but I didn't really think about it until I saw them referenced on the wiki... maybe some other people are in the same position? I'll buy the books soon, so I can see what's in 'em :-). Then when we reference facts from the guides on various episode pages, we can reference where the facts came from - hopefully that will drive interest in Craig's books! --Kanamekun 01:37, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Source Material

Do we have a list somewhere of all of the source material for the Smallville universe?

There are some comics... plus all the Chronicles... plus some short stories and contest prizes! Anyone have a sense for what's on the list? We can create a page on the canon of Smallville, maybe... --Kanamekun 14:04, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

There's a brief list on the Policies page. But you already knew that, right, Admin? ;) Marikology 21:53, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
Yah I love that, but it's not really exhaustive? Like it doesn't list the specific Smallville official comics out there... and it doesn't mention the meeting notes of Veritas... etc. Ah well, I'll throw something together and see if it's useful! --Kanamekun 22:01, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
We now have a page for canon. Marikology 04:58, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Opening Credits

I always thought it'd be neat to do a shot-by-shot analysis of each scene shown in the opening credits of each season. What do you guys think... any interest? --Kanamekun 09:07, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

I like that idea. I can upload the opening credits' screenshots, I just need to know where. RedBlueBlur 04:33, September 8, 2009 (UTC)
Maybe a new page? Season 8 opening credits, etc. If you upload the screenshots, I could help identify any shots! --Kanamekun 05:33, September 8, 2009 (UTC)
I've uploaded the screenshots to Flickr, viewable here.[1] You can view the images at full size by clicking the thumbnails and then clicking the "all sizes" button. If you could help identify which episodes the images are from (the ones I haven't put in the descriptions) it would be extremely helpful! Thanks! RedBlueBlur 09:17, September 8, 2009 (UTC)
Wow, fantastic! I'll create the Season 8 opening credits page now... do you mind uploading them to the wiki? Then maybe we can work together on identifying all the screenshots. THANKS SO MUCH!! --Kanamekun 09:20, September 8, 2009 (UTC)
Done! They're uploaded. Do you have an AIM account or a similar way to talk live while we work on this? It may make it easier to communicate so we can make this page happen. I can tell this is going to turn out great! RedBlueBlur 09:36, September 8, 2009 (UTC)

I just pm'd you about the chat.

In the meantime, here are the screenshots I can identify!

The shots of Tess and Oliver are tough to place... I'm guessing Tess' screenshot is from one of the first two episodes of Season 8! --Kanamekun 09:45, September 8, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Main page layout

I made some modifications to the layout of the main page that I think improve it. You can see the changes in the link below:

User:WHLfan/Smallville Wiki

What do you think?-- WHLfan (talk to me!) 03:08, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Your layout looks fine, but remember it has to accomodate the advertisement in the upper right corner that appears when you are not logged in. Marikology 03:15, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
I think this will work with the ad.-- WHLfan (talk to me!) 08:49, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
I just tested out the changes, and it works with the ad. :)-- WHLfan (talk to me!) 08:53, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
Now that i've looked at it, the new main page doen't look so good, it leaves a big gap between the featured article and the cateories box. I liked the old main page better. Elbutler 01:42, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
Can someone add Season 9 to the side navigation under "seasons" on the main page? i cant for the life of me figure it out. thanks.--B-Rock 23:38, October 7, 2009 (UTC)
