[edit] Movie Theater

The marquee at the Talon
In September of 1939, the Talon opened as a 560 seat movie theater owned by Smallville native William Talon. It had all the trappings of a classic movie house: royal red velour seats, moldings and wall sconces in the theaters, and plush couches and upholstered chairs in the lobby.

The Talon burned down in the Main Street fire of 1955. William Talon immediately made plans to rebuild and expand. On November 29, 1955, the Talon reopened as a 750-seat movie house. As part of the renovation, a neon sign was added that, letter-by-letter, spelled out the theater's name repeatedly. Gently curved staircases on each side of the theater led to a spacious balcony, where teenagers often hung out.

The Talon remained family-owned and operated until 2000. Its patronage fell over the years due to the proliferation of large-chain multiplex theaters and on February 26, 2000, the Talon Theater closed down.

In 2000, entrepreneur Nell Potter acquired the Talon Theater. Unable to find a new tenant to revive the old movie house, Potter sold the property in 2002 to local businessman Lex Luthor who planned to raze it and build a parking structure for the downtown area.

With the future of the old theater in danger, Nell Potter's niece and Smallville High student Lana Lang swung into action. Her parents had met at the Talon, so the theater meant a lot to her. Lana lobbied Luthor to recognize the benefits of historical preservation, especially since it could be used as a tax write off. Impressed with Lang's conviction and ideas, Luthor scrapped his plans. With Nell as manager, Lana as assistant manager and Lex as a silent partner, the Talon opened in the spring of 2002.

Business at the Talon was initially very low, as local youth were more than happy hanging out at the Talon's coffee shop rival, the Beanery. Coupons and discounts did little to attract customers, so Lana moved quickly to secure the Talon's future. She discovered that the Beanery had had several health code violations, and passed along reports of the violations to the Smallville Ledger to be published in the newspaper. This ensured that the Talon would surpass the Beanery as Smallville's most popular after-school hangout.

After Nell moved to Metropolis, Lana actively managed the Talon while in high school. Clark Kent worked there briefly in the spring of 2003, but he left in the middle of a shift and Lana was forced to fire him. In spring of 2004, Lana decided to move to Paris, France, to study art and approached Lex about selling her shares. However, just before her departure, she learned that Lex intended to sell the Talon and turn it into a more lucrative business. She initially asked him to keep it the way it was, but then decided that she didn't want anything drawing her back to Smallville. She left town and Lex sold the Talon to a Mr. Kerns, who was going to covert it into a Burrito Ole. Mr. Kerns was killed by Emily Dinsmore and the coffee shop was closed down all summer without Lex reselling or renovating it.

By the fall of 2004, Martha Kent approached Lex. He agreed to let her manage the Talon and it was reopened. Lois Lane worked there as a waitress. Martha ran the Talon until the her husband Jonathan died suddenly. Martha quit when she decided to take her husband's seat in the Senate. Lois Lane began working there after she was expelled from college until getting a job working for Martha's Senate office.

Today, the Talon is the hippest coffeehouse and gathering place in Smallville. It features an Egyptian design motif and offers a full-service espresso bar and pastries. It has wireless Internet access, occasional live music, and karaoke. The theater is also still functioning, and shows classic movies. Currently, Kara Kent works as a waitress there.

[edit] Special Events

The Talon has become a center for a variety of special events in the town.

  • In 2004, the Smallville Crows football team held a victory party to celebrate advancing to the State Championship game.
  • In 2007, the Talon hosted an elaborate Valentine's Day party. It also hosted the Miss Sweet Corn beauty pageant that fall.

[edit] Talon Apartment

In 2004, Lana met Adam Knight in physical therapy, and when he expressed that he had nowhere to live, she renovated the apartment above the Talon. Adam lived there until Lana discovered he was spying on her, and tried to have him evicted. She enlisted Lex Luthor's help, but before the two could act, he was taken away by Lionel Luthor and Dr. Lia Teng.

After Lana left to attend school in Paris, Lex decided to close down the Talon. However, Lana abruptly and urgently returned to Smallville three months later, and rented the apartment. When Lana moved into the dorms at Metropolis University, Lois Lane rented the apartment. Although she no longer works as a waitress, she is still the Talon apartment's current tenant. As Jonathan Kent's campaign manager, Lois hosted his election victory party at the Talon in January 2006.

The events of Dark Thursday caused the Metropolis University dorms to close, so Lois now temporarily shares the apartment with her cousin Chloe Sullivan. Chloe Sullivan and Lois Lane are both Daily Planet journalists who have written articles attacking LuthorCorp. Despite Lex Luthor's position as their landlord, he has not objected to their staying in the Talon apartment. That said, he is not above abusing his position: in the past, he has used his status as landlord to excuse snooping in the Talon apartment.
