[edit] Physical Appearance
Zatanna has long, straight, dark hair. She wears a top hat and a black tuxedo jacket with a white top underneath and bowtie around her neck. She also wears black fishnet tights and black heels.
[edit] Powers and Abilities
Zatanna possesses powerful magical abilities. At first her abilities were limited to granting 'wishes' of whatever a person most desired at the moment their wish was granted. However, Zatanna's ability to grant wishes only works on others and it does not work on herself. After finding her father's spell book, her powers were increased and she learned that by speaking words backwards, she could conjure spells. Speaking "leets yb dnuob!"(bound by steel) she was able to imprison Oliver Queen within chains that suddenly appeared. With the book, Zatanna has access to the wealth of magical spells including one that can resurrect a person from the dead, providing another life is sacrificed in exchange for theirs.
Zatanna also has the ability to appear and disappear at will and the Book of Zatara is drawn to her when Oliver was about to burn it.
[edit] Early Life
Zatanna Zatara was the daughter of the world's greatest magician, John Zatara. She is an accomplished magician and performer, independent of her magical abilities. Her family has an estate, Shadowcrest, which she inherited after her father's death. According to Zatanna, her father gave his life to save her, something she still feels guilty about. Her father left her a book that has been passed from generation to generation with her heritage inside, but at some point after his death, his book of spells was sold at auction and acquired by Lex Luthor.
Zatanna was driven to reclaim the book, not just because it is a link to her magical heritage, but because within it is a spell which can resurrect her father, though this would mean Zatanna would have to exchange her own life for her father's. She contacted an antique dealer named Yuri that had some knowledge about the location of the book and in exchange for his information, granted him the gift of deeper understanding of dead languages.
[edit] Season Eight
At Chloe Sullivan’s birthday party in the Ace of Clubs, Zatanna was there managing a peddler show of magic tricks called "Zatanna, Mistress of Magics." She wants to draw the attention of Oliver Queen, but thanks to a job-related call, Oliver has to leave in a hurry. As he is leaving, he introduces Chloe to Zatanna and asks Zatanna to give the birthday girl a gift created from a magic trick. To make her birthday interesting, Zatanna asks Chloe to make a wish. Chloe then internally makes her wish. The next morning, Chloe discovers what she wished for has come true when she wakes up looking exactly like her cousin Lois Lane.
Zatanna goes to see Oliver at the Luthor Corp Office and then introduces herself as Zatanna Zatara, daughter of the deceased John Zatara, "the world's greatest magician." She tells Oliver that she needs his help to retrieve a book that was given to her after her father passed away and has now fallen into the hands of Lex Luthor. She also says that the book contains all her heritage and her father's legacy. Oliver is reluctant to help her and asks her why she can't use her powers to recover it. Zatanna explains that even though her father only taught her cheap tricks, he did teach her one powerful trick: granting wishes. She offers to grant Oliver one wish if he returns her father's magical book to her by midnight.Chloe investigates Zatanna and discovers a man who also had a meeting with her. She and Clark then confront Zatanna in an antique theater, the site of the magician's next show. Zatanna explains to them the nature of magic. After Clark confronts her directly about her meeting with the antique dealer, she wonders what he might wish for. Immediately, Clark´s desire to be normal is granted.
Oliver steals the Book of Zatara as the Green Arrow and then goes to give it to Zatanna. After she reveals that she knows Oliver's secret identity, Oliver expresses his concern about the dark spells in the book. Zatanna explains that the irony of her powers is that she has the ability to grant other people their wishes but not her own. Thus, she wanted the book because it would be the only way to bring her father back. Oliver gets ready to destroy the book, but Zatanna snatches the book in time and afterwards, chains Oliver to a post.
Zatanna goes to the Daily Planet roof and starts the ritual to resurrect her father, which requires her to sacrifice herself. When she is about to complete the ceremony, Clark stops her. Zatanna explains that her father died sacrificing his life for her and that she wants to repay him. Clark tries to reason with her and tells her to leave the past behind. Chloe, accompanying Clark, then gets trapped in the mystical vortex that appears. Zatanna, realizing that her father sacrificed himself so she could live, closes the portal.Zatanna goes to Oliver's office to apologize and tells him that there are far more dangerous people that have better control over magic than her. She also says that is she is ever going to do her father proud, she has a lot of reading to catch up on. She then decides to help Oliver if he ever encounters any supernatural foes along the way and gives him her phone number. Finally, she magically disappears to Oliver's curiosity.
[edit] In the Comics
Zatanna is a powerful sexy sorceress whose abilities are apparently genetic. Zatanna is the daughter of magician Giovanni "John" Zatara and Sindella, a member of the mystical “Homo magi” race. Zatanna is a direct descendant of the alchemist Jack Craig Hudgins and Nostradamus. Zatanna makes her living as a stage illusionist prior to discovering her magical abilities while investigating the disappearance of her father. Many Silver Age DC Comic books told the tale of Zatanna looking for her father, Zatara. As a tribute to her father and as a focal point, she usually casts spells by speaking verbal commands backwards. She has also proven capable on many occasions of casting spells by speaking normally, and, in rarer occasions, the ability to use magic for simple tasks without speaking. She also owns a mansion called Shadowcrest, in which she keeps a vast library of magical knowledge, as well as an arsenal of powerful relics, enough to do "just about anything you'd want to do." Shadowcrest seems to exist in a completely different dimension, although it is initially located outside of Gotham. Zatanna also has a strong relationship with Batman. In Detective Comics #833 (August 2007), it is stated that Zatanna's father was a friend of Thomas Wayne. Later John Zatara trained Bruce Wayne in becoming one of the greatest escape artists; and Bruce and Zatanna were childhood friends (a retcon of thier former first meeting as adults). Zatanna and Bruce have a working friendship in the comics, with Bruce calling her for assistance from time to time. Zatanna's standing with Batman is very positive, even proposing that they start a relationship before Bruce tells her he cares too much about her to bring her into his world.
[edit] Notes

- Zatanna's father John Zatara made his debut alongside Superman in Action Comics #1, the two technically share status as the first Superhero.
- Despite plans to help Oliver, Zatanna has not been shown so far as an official member of the Justice League.
